Choose an AV receiver if your system centers on a TV and needs video-source routing, surround processing, and power for several speakers. For a two-speaker music system, compare a stereo receiver with an integrated amplifier: the receiver often adds a tuner or other built-in sources, while the integrated amplifier combines source selection and volume control with power amplification. The right choice depends on the exact connections and speaker layout you need—not on a blanket claim that one type sounds better.
What’s the difference between a receiver and an amplifier?
An amplifier boosts an audio signal enough to drive speakers. A typical integrated amplifier combines preamplifier functions—such as choosing a source and adjusting volume—with a power amplifier. It can drive passive speakers, which do not contain their own amplification.

A receiver includes amplification plus additional built-in functions. As Denon’s Amplifier Buying Guide puts it, “All receivers are technically amplifiers, but not all amplifiers are receivers.” The extra features depend on the receiver type and the specific model.

Integrated amplifier
An integrated amplifier is generally a two-channel component for a stereo system. It combines audio controls and power amplification, but may have fewer built-in sources than a receiver. Check the model’s inputs and outputs rather than assuming it has a particular feature.

Stereo receiver
A stereo receiver combines stereo amplification and controls with a tuner or other sources. Yamaha describes typical examples as including AM/FM radio or network streaming, but the exact built-ins vary. If radio or streaming matters, confirm that the model supports the service or connection you want.
AV receiver
An AV receiver (AVR) adds audio/video processing and source routing to amplification. Depending on the model, it may switch HDMI sources, decode surround formats, support streaming, calibrate sound for the room, and power multiple channels. It suits a system where a TV, game console, disc player, and several speakers need to work together.

Which type fits your sound system?
| Your system and priorities | Likely fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Two passive speakers for music, with no need for a radio tuner | Integrated amplifier | Inputs, speaker compatibility, any needed pre-outs, and phono support for a turntable |
| Two passive speakers with a built-in tuner or convenient network sources | Stereo receiver | Tuner, streaming, Bluetooth, input selection, phono support, and speaker compatibility |
| TV, game console, and multiple speakers for surround sound | AV receiver | Speaker-channel layout, surround formats, HDMI inputs and outputs, ARC/eARC, and any gaming or video features you need |
| Plans to expand or upgrade components separately | Separate preamplifier and power amplifier, or an AV processor and power amplifier | Matching connections, channel needs, space, cost, and the intended upgrade path |
| Powered speakers or an active soundbar | Often no separate amplifier | Whether the product already contains amplification and has the inputs your sources require |
These are system-fit guidelines, not results of comparative listening tests. Manufacturer guides from Yamaha and Denon likewise frame the decision around use, features, room, and speaker configuration.

What should you check before buying?
1. Speaker count and layout
A stereo system uses two main channels. AV receivers support multi-channel home-theater layouts, but the number of channels they can decode and amplify varies by model. Match the receiver to your planned speaker layout; do not assume that every AVR supports the same configuration.

2. Inputs and outputs
List your sources and display, then verify that the specific model has the connections they require. A TV-centered system may need enough HDMI inputs for its sources, an output to the TV, and ARC or eARC support for audio return. For example, Yamaha’s RX-V6A specifications list HDMI eARC and multiple HDMI inputs; those features are an example for that model, not a guarantee for all receivers.
3. Formats and other features
Check for the surround, video, gaming, streaming, or room-calibration features you will actually use. Denon’s buying guide names formats and features such as Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, HDR formats, VRR, and ALLM, but support depends on the model. Confirm compatibility across the receiver, display, source, and speakers where relevant.

- Bass & Treble Control】Designed with volume, treble and bass control knobs for more delicate adjustment of the sound, much fun and high playability. Include controller for distant audio adjustments. Note: There is an isolation plastic sheet at the bottom of the remote control, which needs to be removed before use.
4. Turntable connection
A turntable needs phono equalization somewhere in the signal chain. A phono input on the amplifier or receiver can provide it. Some turntables have a built-in phono preamp and can connect to an input that does not provide phono equalization. Check the turntable’s configuration and the amplifier’s inputs before buying an add-on.

Compare wattage only when the measurement conditions match. Yamaha lists the RX-V6A at 100 W per channel at 8 ohms and 0.06% THD with two channels driven. That is a model-specific specification under the stated condition; it does not establish the same output with every channel driven or indicate that one category is inherently better.

6. Room, space, and upgrade plans
Consider the room, speaker configuration, available space, and budget alongside the feature list. Separate preamplifier and power-amplifier components allow the power amplifier to be upgraded independently, but add components and connections. An integrated component can be simpler when its built-ins and channel count suit the system.
Quick Recap
Make the decision in three steps
- Start with the speakers. If you have powered speakers or an active soundbar, check whether they already include amplification. For passive speakers, establish whether you need two channels or a multi-speaker surround layout.
- Match the system to its main job. For TV-centered surround sound, look at AV receivers. For two-channel music, compare integrated amplifiers and stereo receivers based on built-in sources and controls.
- Verify the exact model. Check every required connection, channel, format, tuner, phono input, and power-rating condition in that model’s specifications. Feature names and category labels alone are not enough to confirm compatibility.
