Receipt Gate is a control for agent workflows: after every mutating tool call, the agent must produce a short, human-readable receipt of what changed, and it may not perform another write until that receipt exists and is specific enough to review. The idea is to make business-state changes legible before side effects pile up. It was proposed in an article by Wasim Sheikh as an architecture pattern. It is a design proposal, not an independently validated standard, and the article does not report measured results.
Why a successful tool response is not enough
A tool response of ok answers one question: did the API accept the call? It does not answer the question a teammate actually needs answered, which is what business state changed and whether that matches what the agent intended to do.
The article’s motivating scenario is an invoice exception agent that does three things in sequence: it updates a CRM opportunity, writes a note to a finance ticket, and sends a customer email. In the illustrative example, all three tool calls return success, yet the CRM state, the ticket note, and the customer message disagree with each other. Each individual call looked fine, so nothing in the run flagged the problem until a person compared the three systems by hand.
The author presents this as an illustrative scenario, not a reported incident with outcome data. Its value is in showing the gap the pattern is meant to close: a write can succeed at the API level while the business record it was supposed to produce is wrong or unclear.

How the pattern works
Receipt Gate has five layers. Each one addresses a different point where a run can go wrong after a write has already happened.
1. Write-to-receipt contract
Every mutating tool should emit a structured receipt before orchestration continues. The article suggests these fields:
- the object or resource ID the write touched
- the changed fields or side effects
- the tool name and schema ID
- the relevant inputs, with sensitive values redacted
- a plain-language outcome of success, partial, or fail
2. Skim rule
A teammate should be able to understand the receipt in a few seconds. The article recommends three parts: a one-sentence summary, concrete change bullets, and an explicit statement when an expected field was not changed. The last part matters because a silent omission is easy to miss. A vague description such as “updated record” should fail the gate, because it gives a reviewer nothing to check against the source system.

- Compatibility Information: Please ensure that our receipt printer is compatible with your device. The Ethernet interface supports Windows, Mac OS, Linux, VirtualCom, Android, RaspberryPi and iOS. But the USB interface could only support Windows, Mac OS, Linux, VirtualCom and Android. Additionally, it does not support Ubereats, Grubhub, Doordash, Postmates, Clover, or Shopify for POS software.
- Fast Printing & Auto Cutter: This high-efficiency thermal receipt printer boasts a maximum printing speed of 260mm/s, ensuring quick and efficient printing without any paper jams. The automatic cutter is designed to handle heavy usage and can last up to 1.5 million cuts. With a one-button open cover and a spacious paper warehouse, this POS printer is easy to use and maintain. Additionally, the receipt printers utilizes direct thermal printing technology, eliminating the need for ribbons or ink.
- USB & Ethernet Interface: The receipt printer has USB and Ethernet interfaces, as well as cash drawer RJ11 ports. However, it does not support Bluetooth or WiFi printing. With a 203 dpi resolution, the Ethernet receipt printer produces high-quality prints that are sharp and clear. To develop custom applications on Ethernet-supported systems like iOS and Android, a software development kit (SDK) is necessary.
- Wall Mount Option: The kitchen printer has a wall mount option with two hanging holes at the bottom, allowing it to easily fit into any space. This USB receipt printer is an excellent choice for various establishments such as restaurants, kitchens, retail stores, grocery stores, clothing stores, supermarkets, cafes, ticket points, food trucks, banks, shopping malls, hotels, canteens, and more.

Whether you require assistance with setup, connection, compatibility, or any other issues related to the product, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. Additionally, all Volcora products are backed by a limited lifetime warranty, ensuring your peace of mind when making a purchase.
3. Next-write latch
The next mutating tool stays closed until the previous receipt passes both the schema check and the skim check. Read-only tools may continue while the latch is closed. The article’s position is that irreversible or customer-visible writes should wait for a receipt, while lookups do not need to.

Receipts are stored in order alongside the run trace. Each receipt references its predecessor, so the chain stays intact even when a step partially fails. The article connects this chain to audits and exports, so an operator can read the sequence of changes directly rather than reconstructing it from the model’s memory of the run.
5. Human or policy break-glass
Sometimes a run has to continue after a partial receipt. In that case the article calls for an explicit override that records a named approver, the reason, and a short time-to-live for the override. It warns against silent auto-continue after a failed skim check. An override should be visible, attributable, and expire on its own.

What a receipt looks like in practice
The following receipt is illustrative, written here to show the fields and the skim standard; it is not taken from the article. For the invoice scenario, the CRM write would produce something like:
- Summary: Set opportunity stage to “Payment Dispute” on the Acme renewal opportunity.
- Resource: CRM opportunity, ID as returned by the CRM.
- Changed: stage (was “Negotiation”); next step date (not changed).
- Outcome: success.
A reviewer can check each line against the CRM record. A receipt that says only “updated opportunity” would fail the skim rule, and under the latch the ticket write would not proceed.
Implementation choices to settle
The article does not compare products, so the table below is built from the design choices it describes. Each row is a decision a team would need to make before adopting the pattern.

- High-speed printing of 43 receipts per minute (250mm/s) with easy to setup USB connection - just Plug and Print; USB serial number feature means the PC will detect the TSP143IIIU on its Windows platform using any USB port
- Compatible with iOS, Android, and Windows for a simple setup process
- The "Drop-In and Print" clamshell design allows for fast and easy paper loading; patented "De-Curl" function always delivers a flat receipt
- The TSP143IIIU USB model is certified with the following companies: Postmates, Square, Chromebook, and Clover
- The small footprint and embedded power supply saves precious counter space
| Axis | Question to settle | What the article’s design implies |
|---|---|---|
| Receipt completeness and readability | Which fields are mandatory, and what makes a summary specific enough? | Required fields plus a one-sentence summary and explicit “not changed” statements |
| Which operations count as writes | Which tools are treated as mutating and so require a receipt? | Every tool that changes state, including those that send messages |
| Which checks open the latch | What must pass before the next write? | Schema validation and the skim check |
| Whether read-only operations continue | Should lookups wait for the latch? | They may continue while writes wait |
| Trace retention and linkage | How long are receipts kept, and how are they linked? | Ordered in the run trace, each referencing its predecessor; retention period not stated |
| Handling of partial failure | What happens when a receipt says partial? | Chain retained; continuation only through break-glass |
| Override controls | Who can approve a continuation, and for how long? | Named approver, recorded reason, short TTL; no silent auto-continue after a failed skim |
Pre-ship check
The article suggests one question to ask before shipping an agent that writes:
“If write #1 returns ok, can a teammate skim a plain-language receipt of what changed and does write #2 stay closed until that receipt exists?”
It also suggests a smoke evaluation that asserts “no second write without receipt.” In practice, that test sends a second write after a first write whose receipt is missing or vague, and confirms that the second write is blocked. The article also names a Ship Gate that would refuse agents that mutate twice without a skimmable receipt.

What is and is not established
The evidence for Receipt Gate is limited to the author’s design argument and an illustrative example. As of the article’s publication, the following points hold:
- It is the author’s architecture proposal. It is not an independently validated standard, and no regulator guidance on it was identified.
- The invoice scenario is illustrative, not a reported case with outcome data.
- No measured reduction in failures, no named statistics, and no independent study of its effectiveness were identified.
- Permission Envelope, Golden Trace, Smoke Evals, Ship Gate, and the five-layer agent stack are the article’s own terms. Independent definitions were not located, so treat them as the author’s vocabulary.
The pattern is worth evaluating for workflows where a wrong write is costly and hard to undo, such as customer messages or financial records. Whether it reduces those errors in practice is a question the article does not answer, and a team would need its own measurements to know.
