There is no single Realtek Ethernet driver that fits every PC. Identify the Ethernet adapter and your Windows version or Linux kernel first, then use Windows Update, your computer manufacturer’s support page, or the matching driver-family page on Realtek’s official site. The steps below cover finding a suitable package, installing or reinstalling it, and checking common connection problems.
Before downloading: identify the adapter and operating system
Realtek’s downloads are separated by controller family and connection type, including PCIe, PCI GBE, and USB. A package for one family is not automatically right for another. In Windows, open Device Manager and expand Network adapters to see the adapter name. If it is missing or shown as an unknown device, check the PC maker’s specifications or support page using the computer’s model number.

For Windows, note the version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit; the package must support that Windows version and architecture. For Linux, check the kernel version and the controller model. Realtek lists separate Linux driver branches, so a kernel range or version shown for one branch should not be treated as universal. For example, the Realtek PCIe catalog lists PCIe FE/GbE/2.5GbE/5G/10G drivers, while the PCI GBE catalog covers a different set of PCI identifiers. Use the family that matches the actual controller, not just the Realtek brand name.

Microsoft recommends Windows Update for driver updates for most hardware, including network adapters. Connect the PC to the internet if possible, then:

- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters, right-click the Ethernet adapter, and select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for updated driver software and follow any prompts.
- If Windows does not find a newer driver, check Windows Update’s available driver updates. Microsoft’s driver update guidance explains the update route.
If Windows says the best driver is already installed, that does not establish that a different or forced package is needed. Confirm the adapter model and consult the PC maker’s support page before changing drivers.
Windows: install a downloaded package manually
Prefer the PC manufacturer’s driver for the exact computer model when it is available. If using Realtek’s catalog, select the matching controller family and an entry that explicitly supports your Windows version and architecture. Realtek’s listings can include multiple Windows package types and versions. For instance, the PCIe catalog checked October 4, 2026 listed Windows 10/11 NDIS 10.80.50 and Windows 11 NetAdapterCx 11.031.50, both updated August 28, 2026. Those are examples of entries in that catalog, not a recommendation for every PC. The same page listed Linux branches including r8168, r8125, r8126, and r8127 for kernels up to 7.1, each with its own package details. Check the live catalog because versions and dates can change.

- Download the package from the PC manufacturer or the relevant official Realtek download listing. Microsoft advises: “Avoid downloading drivers from any websites other than the manufacturer’s official site.” See its Windows driver guidance.
- If the download is compressed, extract it to a folder you can find. Run the package’s installer if it includes one and follow its instructions.
- If there is no installer, open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click the Ethernet adapter, and select Update driver.
- Choose Browse my computer for drivers, select the extracted driver folder, and continue through the prompts.
For the PCI GBE identifiers listed on Realtek’s separate family page, use that PCI GBE listing, not the PCIe catalog. Package availability and supported systems vary by family.
Install a driver when the PC is offline
If the affected computer has no internet connection, Microsoft recommends downloading the network driver on another computer and transferring it on a USB flash drive. Use the affected PC’s manufacturer and model to find the appropriate package, rather than choosing a download only because it says Realtek.

- On a working computer, open the PC maker’s support page and download the Ethernet driver for the affected computer’s model and Windows version. If necessary, use the matching official Realtek family page.
- Save the downloaded file to a USB flash drive.
- Connect the drive to the affected PC and copy the file locally. Extract it if required.
- Run the installer, or use Device Manager’s Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers flow and point it to the extracted folder.

Reinstall or roll back a driver after a problem
Reinstall the adapter driver
If earlier troubleshooting has not fixed the problem, Microsoft advises uninstalling the Ethernet adapter driver and restarting, particularly when the failure began after an update. Download a backup driver from the PC manufacturer before uninstalling so you can install it if Windows does not restore a working driver automatically.

- Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the Ethernet adapter and select Uninstall device. Confirm the uninstall when prompted.
- Restart the PC. Windows will look for and install a driver; if it does not, install the saved backup using the manual steps above.
Roll back a recent update
If the issue began immediately after a driver update, Device Manager may offer a rollback. Open the adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if available. Administrator permissions are required, and the option may not be available for every driver. Microsoft documents this and other driver steps in its driver update guidance.
Check the cable and connection before resetting Windows
- Make sure the cable is firmly connected to the PC and the correct LAN port on the router.
- If possible, try another Ethernet cable to rule out a faulty cable.
- If the trouble followed a driver update, consider rollback or reinstalling the driver using the steps above.
- Use Windows Network reset only after other steps. It removes and reinstalls network adapters and resets their settings; VPN clients or Hyper-V virtual switches may need to be set up again.
If the computer has no Ethernet port, Microsoft lists a USB-to-Ethernet adapter as an optional way to try a wired connection. It is not required to install a Realtek driver. Microsoft’s Ethernet connection troubleshooting covers these checks. Its current page also notes that Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025; the PC may still work, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11.

Linux: select the matching Realtek driver branch
Realtek publishes Linux drivers by controller family rather than one universal Ethernet package. On the PCIe family page, check the controller branch, package details, and stated kernel range against the adapter and kernel in your system. Do not assume that a branch listed for kernels up to 7.1 applies to every Realtek controller, or that a Windows package is relevant to Linux. The PCI GBE family has its own separate listing. The appropriate choice depends on the exact controller and system; the family pages do not identify a universal package for all Linux users.
