Real-Time GA4 Dashboard: How to Build One and Prepare for Google OAuth Review

A GA4 Realtime dashboard can surface recent events within a bounded reporting window. Build around supported metrics, request narrow OAuth access, and prepare accurate branding and privacy details.

A real-time GA4 dashboard can show recent event activity through Google Analytics Data API’s runRealtimeReport method—but it is not an unlimited live feed, and it cannot reproduce every standard GA4 report. For a LiveStack-style app, the practical work is to design around those reporting limits, request only the OAuth access the feature needs, and prepare the app’s public identity and privacy disclosures for Google’s review requirements.

What “real time” means in a GA4 dashboard

Google Analytics Data API’s v1beta properties.runRealtimeReport method returns a customized report of recent event data for a GA4 property. Google says events can appear in Realtime reports within seconds of being sent, making the method suitable for a live activity view or counter.

The report has a bounded lookback window, not an unlimited stream of historical data. Google documents the interval as the present through the prior 30 minutes for standard GA4 properties and through the prior 60 minutes for Analytics 360. A dashboard built on this endpoint should therefore label its data as recent activity and avoid implying that it is a durable event history.

Choose the reporting view that fits the feature

Reporting choice What it offers Trade-off or limit
Realtime reporting Recent event activity; Google documents a lookback of up to 30 minutes for standard properties and up to 60 minutes for Analytics 360. Supports a smaller subset of dimensions and metrics than Core Reporting.
Core Reporting Broader reporting dimensions and metrics for analytics use cases beyond the Realtime view. It is not the bounded recent-activity view described by the Realtime endpoint.

Supported Realtime metrics include activeUsers, eventCount, keyEvents, and screenPageViews. The available schema is limited: event-scoped custom dimensions and event-scoped custom metrics are not supported in Realtime reports. Design the dashboard around dimensions and metrics the endpoint actually supports rather than promising parity with GA4’s broader reports.

Google’s endpoint reference lists both https://www.googleapis.com/auth/analytics.readonly and the broader https://www.googleapis.com/auth/analytics scope for this method. The readonly scope is the narrower option when the feature only needs to read analytics data; select scopes based on the actual functions the app performs.

Prepare the OAuth app for review

Google’s review requirements depend on the OAuth scopes requested and the app’s use case. Google states: “Sensitive scopes require review by Google before any Google Account can grant access.” Exceptions may apply to particular use cases. If an app uses only non-sensitive scopes, app verification is not mandatory, although a lighter brand-verification process may be needed for the app’s name and logo to appear on the OAuth consent screen. Check the scope classifications in Google Cloud Console for the actual project rather than assuming a category from a tutorial.

  1. Map scopes to features. Identify which API endpoints and app functions need Google access. Request the narrowest scope that provides those functions, and declare the scopes in Cloud Console.
  2. Verify the public identity. Ensure the app’s branding information is accurate and verify ownership of its authorized domains as required.
  3. Make the homepage review-ready. The public homepage should be accessible without signing in and clearly describe the app under review.
  4. Publish a relevant privacy policy. Host it on the same domain as the homepage, link it from the consent screen, and explain how Google user data is accessed, used, stored, and shared.
  5. Check branding status before requesting data-access verification. Google says published branding status must come before a sensitive- or restricted-scope data-access verification request.
  6. Confirm the app’s actual data practices match its disclosures. Google’s policy requires scope use and Google API data handling to align with the applicable policy and the app’s privacy information.

Meeting these preparation requirements does not guarantee approval or establish a review timeline. Google’s documentation describes requirements, not a guaranteed outcome.

Keep Play app linking separate from OAuth verification

Linking an app data stream in GA4 to a Google Play app is a separate permission and configuration task; it is not the same process as OAuth scope verification. Google Analytics Help says the link is matched one-to-one using the app package name. To create it, the user needs the Editor role on the GA4 property and Admin permissions on the Play developer account. Make sure the package name matches the intended Play app before creating the link.
