For a typical Vite project, run npm run dev; for an existing Create React App project, run npm start. The command and address depend on the project, so use its README or package.json and trust the server’s ready message.
Open an existing React app locally
- Open the project folder in a terminal. Run commands from the folder that contains the project’s
package.json. - Find the project’s start command. Check its README and the
scriptssection ofpackage.json. Frameworks can use different commands and ports. - Install dependencies if needed, then start the server. In a Vite project the usual command is
npm run dev. An existing Create React App project traditionally usesnpm start. - Open the URL printed in the terminal. Vite documents
http://localhost:5173as its default address; the legacy Create React App guide documentshttp://localhost:3000. A project may use a different configured port, so the terminal’s URL takes precedence. - Leave the server running. The local page depends on that terminal process. Stop it only when you are finished viewing the app.
React apps are not normally viewed by double-clicking a component such as App.jsx. The project’s tooling compiles and serves the app; in Vite, index.html is the entry point served for the application. See the Vite guide and Create React App getting started guide.

What to do when the page will not load
- Check the terminal first. A build error or failed startup can prevent the server from serving the page. Address the error, then use the URL in the server’s ready message.
- Confirm the command and folder. If a script is missing, you may be in the wrong directory or following instructions for a different framework. Recheck the project’s README and
package.json. - Use the actual port. Do not assume the default address if the project prints another one or has a port configured.
- Inspect browser errors if the server is running. The browser’s developer console and network panel can show client-side errors or failed requests that do not stop the server itself.
Start a new React learning project
For a new app, React recommends starting with a framework. If you specifically want a minimal setup from a build tool, React’s from-scratch guide lists Vite, Parcel, and Rsbuild. Follow the project’s own setup instructions after choosing an approach.

Then follow the generated project’s scripts to start its development server. Vite’s current guide requires Node.js 20.19+ or 22.12+; some templates may require a newer version. Check the Vite guide for the current requirement and setup details.

Create React App is deprecated, according to React’s installation guidance. Its old command remains relevant when you need to run an existing project built with it, but it is not React’s recommended starting point for a new app.
Try React without installing a local toolchain
React’s installation page says, “You don’t need to install anything to play with React.” It points to editable sandboxes including CodeSandbox, StackBlitz, and CodePen. Vite also offers a browser-hosted environment through StackBlitz, with React templates. This is a convenient way to experiment without setting up a local development server; see React’s installation page and the Vite guide.

View the app or inspect its React components?
Simply opening the app’s local URL is enough to view it; React Developer Tools is optional. If you want to inspect a React site, the extension for Chrome, Firefox, or Edge adds Components and Profiler panels. React also documents using the react-devtools npm package for Safari and other browsers. Installation and connection steps are on the React Developer Tools page.
