RCS can show delivery and read status, typing indicators, and high-resolution photos and videos—but only when the people in a conversation, their messaging apps, and their carriers support RCS. SMS and MMS remain the fallback for text and media, with fewer chat features. A missing receipt does not prove someone has read or ignored a message.
RCS, SMS and MMS: the practical difference
SMS is the familiar carrier messaging service for text. MMS extends carrier messaging to media such as photos and videos. RCS (Rich Communication Services) adds chat features to phone-number messaging, including delivery and read receipts, typing indicators, and high-resolution media when supported.

RCS in Google Messages uses Wi-Fi or mobile data, but it also depends on compatible apps, devices, providers and regional availability. SMS and MMS use carrier messaging services. Apple says an iPhone needs iOS 18 and a text-messaging plan from a provider that supports RCS on iPhone for RCS to be available there. [Apple Support] Google also notes that RCS availability for iPhone users can depend on country and carrier. [Google Messages Help]

| Connection | Wi-Fi or mobile data in Google Messages; provider support is required. [Google Messages Help] | Carrier messaging; availability depends on the service and plan. [Apple Support] |
| Sent, delivered and read indicators | Google Messages can show these states for RCS messages. [Google Messages Help] | Google Messages does not show its RCS status icons for SMS or MMS. [Google Messages Help] |
| Typing indicators | Available when supported by the conversation and network. [Google Messages Help] [GSMA Universal Profile v2.7] | Not an SMS/MMS feature in Google’s comparison. [Google Messages Help] |
| Photos and videos | Supports high-resolution sharing. [Apple Support] [Google Messages Help] | MMS can carry photos and videos. The cited official pages do not establish a directly comparable image-quality or size limit. [Apple Support] |

What sent, delivered and read mean
In Google Messages, an RCS message may show a timer while sending, a single check when sent, a double check when delivered, and a filled double check when read. These icons do not appear for SMS or MMS. [Google Messages Help]

- Sent means the message has been sent through the messaging service.
- Delivered means the service reports that it reached the recipient’s device or conversation; it does not prove the recipient saw it.
- Read is a receipt from an RCS conversation when the relevant feature and settings allow it. Google says read receipts do not work if the recipient does not have RCS chats enabled. [Google Messages Help]
A missing read receipt is inconclusive: the chat may not be using RCS, the recipient may not have read receipts enabled, or support may differ across providers. Treat receipts as signals from a compatible conversation, not guarantees about what a person has seen.
Why typing indicators and photo quality can change
Typing indicators are an RCS capability, not a universal promise. The GSMA Universal Profile v2.7 defines typing notifications but also says networks may not support them and may ignore incoming typing notifications. [GSMA Universal Profile v2.7]

RCS supports high-resolution photos and videos, while MMS also carries media. The official pages cited here do not give a common resolution, file-size ceiling or quality comparison, so there is no reliable universal number to apply to every carrier or app. The message type and service support can affect the experience.
How to tell whether a chat is using RCS
Do not rely on bubble color alone. On iPhone, RCS and SMS/MMS both appear green, while iMessage appears blue; green does not distinguish RCS from SMS/MMS or indicate whether a conversation is encrypted. [Apple Support]

- Check the composer or conversation details. Look for an RCS label or RCS-specific chat features in the messaging app. Labels and controls vary by app.
- Check RCS settings. In Google Messages, open your profile picture or initial, then Messages settings > RCS chats. Confirm that RCS chats are available and enabled. [Google Messages Help]
- Check device and provider eligibility. On iPhone, RCS requires iOS 18 and a provider that supports RCS on iPhone; availability also varies by country and carrier. [Apple Support] [Google Messages Help]
- Interpret a fallback correctly. If the recipient or conversation cannot use RCS, standard SMS/MMS can still work, but RCS receipts and typing indicators will not. [Google Messages Help]
Is RCS end-to-end encrypted?
Do not assume every RCS conversation is end-to-end encrypted. On May 11, 2026, Apple announced that end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging was beginning a beta rollout for iPhone users running iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest Google Messages. Apple says the rollout will expand over time. [Apple Newsroom]
Check the conversation itself: Apple says an “Encrypted” label and lock icon indicate end-to-end encryption. Encryption depends on every participant’s provider supporting it; without the indicator, the RCS conversation is not protected by end-to-end encryption. SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted.
