If both people’s devices, software, and carriers support RCS, you can get features such as typing indicators, read receipts, and higher-resolution media. If RCS is unavailable, the message may fall back to SMS/MMS. Green bubbles alone do not tell you which service is being used—or whether the conversation is encrypted.
What changes in an iPhone-to-Android conversation?
RCS is a carrier-provided messaging service that can add richer features to texting across platforms. It does not turn an Android conversation into iMessage: iMessage remains Apple’s service for Apple devices, while RCS and SMS/MMS appear green on iPhone. Apple lists the distinct group-message capabilities in its guide to sending group texts. RCS improves on basic texting, but its group features should not be assumed to match iMessage feature for feature.

Which features can RCS add?
Typing indicators and read receipts
In a supported RCS conversation, you may see when the other person is typing and whether a message has been read. Read receipts depend on settings and participant support; Google says recipients must have read receipts turned on for their status to appear. Its RCS chats FAQ describes these features and notes that read receipts in cross-platform iPhone chats apply to one-to-one conversations.

Higher-resolution media and links
RCS supports higher-resolution photo and video sharing than basic SMS/MMS, as well as links. The exact experience still depends on compatible RCS support at both ends; if a conversation uses SMS/MMS instead, do not expect those RCS capabilities.
Group conversations
RCS group chats can include richer media, links, typing indicators, and receipts. iMessage separately supports group features such as editing messages and replying to a specific message, so an RCS group is not necessarily equivalent to an iMessage group.

Why do some green messages use RCS and others use SMS/MMS?
An iPhone can use RCS only when its software, carrier, and region support it, and the Android participant must also have RCS available and enabled. If those conditions are not met, messaging may use SMS/MMS instead. Apple says iPhone RCS requires iOS 18 or later and a carrier plan that supports RCS on iPhone; the feature may take time to activate.
RCS uses Wi-Fi or mobile data. Google says mobile-data use is charged according to the user’s plan. iMessage can also use cellular data, for which Apple notes that rates may apply. Check your plan if data charges matter.

How to check or enable RCS
On iPhone
- Open Settings > Apps > Messages > RCS Messaging.
- Turn on RCS Messaging if the control is available.
Apple’s RCS setup instructions say that if the setting is missing, RCS may not be available for your software, carrier, or region. Confirm carrier support and allow for possible activation delay.
On Android
In Google Messages, open its settings and turn on RCS chats. Menu labels can vary; Google’s RCS FAQ covers setup and availability. If either person cannot use RCS, messages may be sent as SMS/MMS instead.

Is RCS between iPhone and Android end-to-end encrypted?
Do not infer encryption from a green bubble or from the fact that the conversation uses RCS. iMessage is end-to-end encrypted, but RCS encryption depends on the implementation and carrier combination. Apple’s current comparison describes end-to-end encrypted RCS as a beta beginning with iOS 26.5, and says it requires every participant’s carrier to support encryption. Google’s FAQ says RCS chats with iPhone users in the Google Messages arrangement it describes are not end-to-end encrypted. These statements are scoped to their respective implementations, not proof that every RCS conversation has the same protection.
Look in the conversation for Apple’s explicit “Encrypted” label and lock indicator before treating it as end-to-end encrypted. Google also documents TLS protection for RCS provided through Google when end-to-end encryption is unavailable; TLS protects data in transit but is not the same as end-to-end encryption.
