The key difference is the analog video signal they accept. A composite RCA-to-HDMI converter takes one video signal—usually the yellow plug in a yellow-red-white AV cable. A component-to-HDMI converter takes three video signals labeled Y, Pb and Pr, usually carried by red, green and blue plugs. The connector style alone does not tell you which signal a converter supports: check its listed input and make sure it converts in the direction you need, from analog video to HDMI.
RCA to HDMI vs. component to HDMI: the difference at a glance
| What to compare | Composite RCA-to-HDMI | Component YPbPr-to-HDMI |
|---|---|---|
| Video input | Composite/CVBS video, commonly on one yellow RCA plug. IDK’s NP-NT2HD specifications list composite video as an input. | Three component signals: Y, Pb and Pr. IDK’s NP-NT2HD specifications list analog YPbPr as an input. |
| Typical cable layout | Three plugs commonly carry composite video (yellow) plus left and right audio (red and white or black). TCL describes the common AV cable layout. | Three plugs carry video; audio is separate. Sony’s component-input guide identifies Y, Pb and Pr as video signals. |
| What the converter must accept | Look for composite or CVBS input, and confirm support for your source’s video standard. | Look for analog YPbPr input, and confirm support for your source’s resolution and timing. |
| Audio | Audio usually travels on separate plugs; check whether the converter accepts it and embeds it in HDMI. The NP-NT2HD, for example, lists analog stereo and S/PDIF audio inputs. See its specifications. | YPbPr carries video, not audio. Connect audio separately or use a converter with audio inputs; check how that model sends sound over HDMI. Sony explains component video’s signal connections. |
| HDMI output and processing | Output modes and any scaling depend on the converter model. | Output modes and any scaling depend on the converter model. |
Why “RCA” can be confusing
RCA is a type of connector, not one specific video format. Composite video commonly uses one RCA plug, often yellow, to carry the picture as a combined signal. In a typical yellow-red-white AV set, the red and white or black plugs carry left and right audio. TCL describes this common cable arrangement.

Component video, often called YPbPr, divides video into three signals: Y, Pb and Pr. The plugs are commonly red, green and blue, though labels on the device are more reliable than color alone. Component cables carry video; audio needs a separate connection. Sony’s guide identifies the three component signals.

Will a component-to-HDMI converter work with composite RCA?
Not unless the converter explicitly supports composite/CVBS input. A converter that accepts YPbPr does not automatically accept composite just because the plugs are RCA. Some models support both, but the listing or manual must name both signal types. For example, IDK’s NP-NT2HD specification lists composite and analog YPbPr as separate supported inputs, with applicable formats specified for the product.
The reverse is also true: a composite-only converter should not be assumed to accept component video. Match the source signal to the converter’s input specification, rather than relying on connector shape or plug color.

How to identify the signal from your source
- One yellow video plug plus red and white audio plugs: Usually composite AV. Check the source’s labels or manual if the connection is unclear; plug color is a clue, not a complete specification. TCL’s AV cable guide describes the common layout.
- Three video jacks labeled Y, Pb and Pr or Y/Pb/Pr: Component video. A separate pair of plugs may carry audio. Sony identifies Y, Pb and Pr as component signals.
- Only an HDMI output: Neither of these analog-input converters is the right direction. Check that a product’s input and output match the signal path you need.
- The source already has HDMI output: Connect it directly to the display by HDMI when possible; an analog converter is unnecessary for that connection. TCL recommends HDMI when the source offers it.
What to check before choosing a converter
- Match the input signal. Find “composite” or “CVBS” for a yellow composite video plug, or “analog YPbPr” for three component video plugs. A combo unit should list both explicitly.
- Confirm conversion direction. The product must take analog video in and send HDMI out. An HDMI-to-component converter performs the opposite job.
- Check supported formats. Compare the source’s video standard, resolution and timing with the converter’s input specifications. Do not assume a converter supports every format carried by that connector type.
- Verify audio handling. Check whether the converter has the required audio inputs and whether it embeds that audio in HDMI. Component video itself does not carry sound.
- Read the HDMI output and processing details. Confirm available output modes and whether the unit scales or processes the image. A listed HDMI resolution describes the output mode, not necessarily new detail in the original picture.
- Check power and setup requirements. Follow the specific product manual for its power supply, input selection and connection procedure.
Does an RCA-to-HDMI converter improve picture quality?
Changing a connection to HDMI does not by itself restore detail absent from the analog source. A converter translates the input into an HDMI-compatible output; some models also scale the output resolution. Sony distinguishes changing the connection type from increasing resolution, stating that “Upconverting video signal does not increase the resolution or quality of the original video signal.” Sony Support explains upconversion and resolution.

The cited manufacturer specifications describe product-supported formats, not a controlled comparison showing that composite-to-HDMI or component-to-HDMI converters universally produce better-looking results. Image processing and output modes vary by model.

- Connect Classic RCA Devices to HDMI Displays: Bring older AV equipment back into use by converting yellow, white and red composite RCA signals into HDMI output for newer TVs, monitors and projectors. Choose between 720P and 1080P output at 60Hz to match your display. Please note that this av to hdmi adapter is built specifically for connecting an RCA/AV source to an HDMI display; it cannot convert an HDMI source to RCA/AV.
- Complete 3-Cable Set Included: Includes separate RCA, HDMI and Micro USB cables for video/audio connection, HDMI output and power. The RCA and HDMI cables are detachable for flexible placement and use with compatible equipment. USB power is required for operation. A Micro USB cable is included; a 5V/1A power adapter is not included.
- Selectable 720P and 1080P Output: Use the built-in resolution switch to select 720P or 1080P output at 60Hz based on your TV or monitor. No software or drivers are required. Connect the RCA source, HDMI display and USB power, then select the desired output resolution.
- Compatibility with Legacy AV Devices: Compatible with RCA-output VCRs, VHS players, DVD players, set-top boxes and karaoke systems, as well as compatible PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Wii, N64, SNES and GameCube systems using RCA/AV output. Supports PAL, NTSC3.58, NTSC4.43, SECAM, PAL/M and PAL/N analog input formats.
- HDMI Output Based on the Original Source:Converts an analog RCA signal to HDMI output with selectable resolution up to 1080P. The av to hdmi converter changes the signal format but does not turn lower-resolution VHS footage or classic game graphics into native HD content. Final picture quality depends on the original source, connected equipment and display. For stable operation, connect the included USB power cable to a 5V/1A USB power source.
Examples and receiver caveats
One product can support both signal types: IDK describes its NP-NT2HD as a “Component/CVBS and Audio to HDMI Scaler Converter.” Its page lists composite and analog YPbPr video inputs, analog stereo and S/PDIF audio inputs, and HDMI output. It says the input video is converted to HDMI at resolutions up to 1080p; that is this model’s specification, not a guarantee that every connected source becomes 1080p or gains original detail.
Sabrent also lists a component (YPbPr) and RCA stereo audio to HDMI converter. These product pages establish examples of the product category, not independent performance results. Check the exact unit’s supported formats, audio handling, power requirements and current availability before buying.

Do not assume an AV receiver converts analog inputs to HDMI output simply because it has both kinds of ports. Sony documents a receiver case in which composite or component input is not converted to HDMI output and advises connecting the display through the corresponding analog output. Check the manual for your exact receiver.
