Monitor Audio advises keeping the run to 10 meters or less for its Anthra setup to avoid interference, while iFi says a well-shielded 15-foot (4.5-meter) RCA cable can be suitable. Treat 10 meters as manufacturer-specific conservative guidance—not a rule for every receiver and subwoofer.
What determines how long an RCA subwoofer cable can run?
The reliable length depends on the receiver or processor’s output, the subwoofer’s input, cable shielding and construction, and the electrical environment along the route. The cited guidance does not establish one distance that works for every system.

RCA is an unbalanced connection, so a long run can be more susceptible to interference and grounding issues than a balanced connection. Rane’s 2001 technical note discusses long-line drive stability and potential frequency loss in line-driver applications, but it does not set a maximum distance for home-theater subwoofer cables: Rane, “Audio Specifications”.
How to choose a practical cable length
- Measure the actual route. Follow the path around furniture and along walls, then choose a cable that reaches without pulling on either connector.
- Choose a well-shielded cable. iFi recommends well-shielded RCA cable for longer runs and notes that managing earth or ground connections may be necessary: iFi, “Can long RCA cables be used?”.
- Check both equipment manuals. Follow the receiver and subwoofer makers’ guidance for your specific models. Monitor Audio’s Anthra support page says cable lengths should not exceed 10 meters to avoid interference from other electrical appliances: Monitor Audio, Anthra subwoofer support.
- Route it sensibly. Where practical, keep the RCA cable separated from power wiring and other likely sources of electrical interference. This is a practical installation precaution, not a guarantee against hum.
What to connect at the subwoofer
AV receiver or processor
Monitor Audio says to connect one subwoofer cable to either of the Anthra subwoofer’s RCA inputs when connecting it to an AV receiver or processor. Use the connection specified by your equipment manuals; do not add an RCA Y-splitter unless your equipment instructions call for one.
#1 Best Overall
- [CONNECTIVITY] FosPower's premium Subwoofer single RCA male to single RCA male audio cable connects a subwoofer speaker to a stereo receiver, audio component or surround sound system. Great for connecting audio components with a single RCA Port/jack.
- [24K GOLD-PLATED CONNECTORS] These cables are made from high quality 24k gold-plated connectors that are corrosion resistant and reduce tarnish.
- [DUAL LAYER BRAIDED AND FOIL SHIELDING] The cables' dual layer shields are braided with copper and protected by aluminum foil, which provides cable flexibility and greatly reduces unwanted EMI/RFI interference.
- [PF INSULATOR] The cores of FosPower's cables are covered with polyethylene foam (PF) dielectric insulator, which greatly minimizes signal loss. The tin plated copper core reduces oxidation and increases the wire life.
- [LIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTY] Includes a Limited Lifetime Warranty
Two-channel or stereo amplifier
For the two-channel pre-out setup described in its Anthra guidance, Monitor Audio uses a pair of signal cables. Check the manual for your amplifier and subwoofer, since connection arrangements can differ by model.
What if the cable run is near or over 10 meters?
First check whether either manufacturer gives a distance limit for your equipment. Monitor Audio’s 10-meter advice applies to its Anthra subwoofer guidance; it is not a universal standard. If your route is longer, a product being sold in that length does not prove it will perform reliably in your particular system.

- IN THE BOX: (1) 35 foot subwoofer audio cable for connecting subwoofer speaker to a stereo receiver, sound system, or other compatible audio device
- RELIABLE PERFORMANCE: Corrosion-resistant gold-plated RCA connectors; split-tip center pins for optimal pressure and conductivity; tough, yet flexible PVC exterior
- QUALITY SOUND & BASS: Expertly transmits low-frequency signals generated by subwoofers, ensuring exceptional sound quality and bass response
- FOR DEVICES WITH RCA PORTS: Works with RCA ports, S/Pdif, digital, and composite video interfaces
For example, AudioQuest lists its Black Lab RCA low-frequency subwoofer interconnect in lengths from 2 to 20 meters. Those are available listed variants, not a performance test or a guarantee for every setup: AudioQuest, “Black Lab RCA Low-Frequency Subwoofer Audio Interconnect”.
If a long RCA cable causes hum
- Check that both RCA connectors are fully seated.
- Try routing the cable away from power wiring where practical.
- Investigate system grounding and earth connections; iFi notes that ground management may be needed with longer RCA cables.
- Consult the receiver and subwoofer manuals before changing connections or adding adapters.
Hum does not by itself prove that the cable is defective. Connector seating, routing, grounding, and the connected equipment all merit a check before replacing it.

Bottom line on subwoofer RCA length
Measure the route, use a well-shielded cable, and follow the distance guidance for your equipment. A 15-foot (4.5-meter) run is described by iFi as quite long but usable with suitable shielding and attention to grounding; Monitor Audio recommends no more than 10 meters for its Anthra setup. Neither figure is a universal maximum for all home theaters.
