For fixed-wing models, start with the airframe and complete power system—not KV alone—and use the motor maker’s propeller guidance as a baseline.
How to choose an RC brushless motor
A brushless drive works when the motor, ESC, battery, and propeller are matched. PICHLER’s guide, updated July 2026, recommends starting with the model’s all-up weight and battery cell count, then selecting motor size and power. These factors determine which motors and propellers are appropriate; a propeller that is too demanding can overload the drive, while a poor match can waste thrust. PICHLER’s brushless motor guide explains this system-based approach.

- Identify the model and its all-up weight. Include the aircraft, battery, and installed equipment when determining weight.
- Confirm the battery cell count. Check that the motor is specified for the intended LiPo voltage.
- Choose a motor suited to the model and power requirement. Use its intended application, dimensions, and power specifications rather than selecting by KV alone.
- Match the propeller to the motor and battery. Start with the manufacturer’s recommended propeller for the chosen cell count.
- Choose an ESC with suitable current capacity. Use the motor’s recommended ESC rating or a compatible matched combo, allowing appropriate headroom.
- Check fit and operation. Verify mounting, shaft and adapter compatibility, connectors, cooling, and the manufacturer’s current product availability.
What KV tells you—and what it does not
KV is the motor’s approximate unloaded revolutions per minute per volt. It is not a direct measure of motor quality, loaded RPM, thrust, or flight speed. A motor’s operating speed and performance depend on the complete setup, including voltage and propeller load. Comparing KV figures without comparing those other factors can lead to a poor match.

Check current, propeller load, and cooling before flying
Continuous and burst current ratings are not interchangeable: burst capacity applies only for the specified brief interval, if one is given. Keep the motor, ESC, and battery within their stated limits. If changing propeller size or battery cell count, recheck power draw rather than assuming the original current figures still apply.

- The design has been integrated and optimized to provide a cleaner and sleeker layout appearance. The overall length is now at 58mm with a smaller footprint to provide for a spacious and easier assembly process
- The FOC drive mode is a game changer. The high efficiency generates lesser heat and effectively extends the endurance time. The almost silent operation has excellent low speed torque and operates smoothly at low speed. The overall power is able to outperform the sensored power system and provides extraordinary control experience to the rock-crawl- er vehicles.
- Smart torque output and speed closed-loop control Elegant posture on the slope
- There are 8-gears of drag brake force and 9-gears of drag brake acceleration adjustment to provide for a stronger ramp parking capability. The maximum drag brake force is about 2 times more than ordinary brush- less systems in order to satisfy the users with different control habits.
- The use of electronic switches is reliable and ensures a longer lifespan. Heavy impact or harsh surface will no longer affect and damaged the switch, eliminating any unwanted damage. Users will be able to enjoy bashing their RC cars.
When telemetry does not report power, the official Spektrum Avian motor manual recommends measuring with a watt meter. It advises ground testing before flight testing and repeating those checks after increasing propeller size or cell count. Monitor temperature: cooling airflow can be worse on the ground than in flight.

The Spektrum manual states that the three motor wires may connect to the ESC in any order; to reverse rotation, swap any two connectors. Always secure the aircraft before testing. Never stand in front of a spinning propeller or reach around it to make adjustments. Use the manual’s complete safety and setup instructions for the specific motor.
