That is a ceiling, not confirmation that the full amount has been funded or will be spent. The announcement says the deal is intended to increase missile availability, but gives no production target or delivery schedule. The headline’s exact 2,660-mph speed is also not verified by the official sources cited here.
What does the $24.4 billion figure mean?
RTX describes the agreement as worth up to $24.4 billion over five years, plus two option years. The wording matters: the announcement does not establish that $24.4 billion has been obligated, or that the government will ultimately spend the entire ceiling. RTX’s October 1, 2026 release does not disclose actual obligated funding or the complete government contract instrument. RTX’s announcement

RTX says the agreement is intended to secure a consistent supply for the Navy and increase SM-6 availability. The company describes its production efforts as including facility investment, workforce growth, stronger supplier partnerships and factory automation. Those are RTX’s statements; the announcement does not attach a unit target or a delivery calendar to them.
Raytheon President Phil Jasper said: “SM-6’s multi-mission capability is vital to our customer, and Raytheon is intensely focused on meeting the demand.”

What is the SM-6 missile used for?
The SM-6 is a U.S. Navy guided missile designed for several mission types. RTX describes it as capable of air defense, anti-surface warfare and ballistic-missile defense, and says it has been fired from Navy ship-based platforms and land launchers. RTX’s SM-6 overview
The Pentagon’s Director, Operational Test and Evaluation (DOT&E) gives a more detailed account in its FY2022 report: fleet air defense; extended-range, over-the-horizon anti-surface operations; overland air defense as part of an integrated fire-control concept; and sea-based terminal defense against short- and medium-range ballistic missiles. The report distinguishes earlier Blocks I and IA from Block IB, which the Navy then planned to give a new second-stage rocket motor to extend engagement range. That description is historical FY2022 planning, not a current Block IB delivery schedule. DOT&E FY2022 report

How fast is the SM-6?
The exact figure of 2,660 mph is not confirmed by the official sources reviewed. The Royal Australian Navy lists the SM-6 speed as “Greater than Mach 3,” without specifying an exact miles-per-hour value. Royal Australian Navy SM-6 specifications
Mach is a ratio to the local speed of sound, which changes with atmospheric conditions. Without a stated conversion method and conditions, “greater than Mach 3” should not be treated as one fixed mph figure.

Does the Navy’s 2026 budget disclose how many missiles the new deal will produce?
No. The U.S. Navy’s FY2026 budget document describes 139 SM-6 IA missiles and canisters planned for procurement in FY2026 under a separate multiyear procurement plan operating at maximum production rate. It is budget context, not a disclosed quantity or delivery commitment under the October 2026 agreement. The budget also distinguishes SM-6 IA from Block IB.
