Choose a leader and opening Cobun pair that solve the danger you expect, place a durable line between enemies and fragile attackers, and make every Ratakaruta reward support that same plan. In combat, clean rhythm commands, timely Fall In regrouping, and purposeful Hustle Tech spending matter as much as raw damage.
Ratatan combines side-scrolling action with rhythm-sequence commands. You move the Ratatan, position the formation, issue orders, and decide when to retreat. The official PC listing also describes online co-op for up to four players, so the principles below work for solo runs and coordinated groups.

Start with the problem your squad must solve
Do not pick a Ratatan because a guide calls it “the best.” The independent Ratatan Wiki beginner guide recommends choosing by battlefield problem: keeping the formation alive, restoring health, reducing incoming damage, applying ranged pressure, controlling crowds, or attacking aggressively. That decision also determines the initial Cobun pair, so it shapes the first encounters before you have many rewards to customize.
Protection and staying power
If early rooms overwhelm your back line, begin with a leader whose starting pair can hold enemies in place or absorb punishment. A durable front gives ranged and support Cobuns time to complete commands. This is especially valuable while you are still learning enemy telegraphs and the rhythm of each command phrase.

Healing and mitigation
Choose a support-oriented opening when chip damage, status pressure, or long rooms are the reason runs end. Healing and damage reduction do not create spectacular opening numbers, but they preserve resources for elites and bosses. They are also easier to value in a new save, when your equipment and Ratakaruta pool are small.
Ranged pressure and crowd control
A ranged or control-focused leader can solve threats before they reach the line. That plan needs protection: if enemies collapse on the shooters, the formation loses both damage and command reliability. Pair long-range attacks with a front line or a regroup habit rather than treating reach as a substitute for defense.
Direct aggression
An aggressive opening is appropriate when you can recognize attack windows and avoid trading health for speed. It rewards confident positioning and disciplined Hustle Tech use. If you are repeatedly dying while trying to finish rooms quickly, switch to a leader that supplies protection or control instead of forcing the same damage plan.

Use the class roster as a role map, not a tier list
The Ratatan class reference groups available jobs by what they do in a formation. Its author warns that the game is in Early Access and balance can change, so use the descriptions to build a coherent line rather than to rank permanent winners.

Build front to back. Put at least one job in the formation that can contest enemies at close range, then add ranged, area, or support Cobuns behind it. A formation with several damage dealers but no durable front may clear a weak room quickly and then collapse when an elite reaches the back. Conversely, a wall with no way to punish enemies can survive without making progress. Your leader and starting pair should cover the first gap; later rewards should widen that coverage only when they reinforce the plan.

Compare two candidate leaders before committing
When two options look appealing, compare them on five concrete axes:
- Battlefield job and range: identify who stands in danger and who can contribute safely.
- Starting pair: note whether the opening Cobuns provide a front, healing, reach, or control.
- Durable front: ask what protects the squad during a command animation.
- Hustle Tech purpose: define the danger the leader’s special action is meant to solve.
- Reward compatibility: check whether likely Ratakaruta and elemental progress can strengthen this formation.
The better choice is the one that answers your current weakness with the fewest additional pieces. If you already have reliable protection, a leader that adds reach or crowd control may be more useful than another defensive layer.

Combat asks you to combine side-scrolling movement with phrase-based rhythm inputs. The beginner guide recommends listening for a phrase to find the pulse instead of rushing the first input. A completed command is described as GOOD; a full sequence of JUST inputs improves the command, doubles MP gained, and lowers the MP cost of Hustle Techs. Treat those benefits as the reason to practice timing, not as a score-chasing minigame.
A repeatable command routine
- Position first. Move the Ratatan and formation so an enemy is not about to interrupt the sequence. If the squad has stretched across the screen, regroup before starting a long phrase.
- Listen for the pulse. Take a phrase to establish the beat, then enter the sequence deliberately. Early, panicked inputs are more likely to produce a weaker result and less MP.
- Complete the command. A GOOD result still executes the order. Do not abandon a safe command because every input was not JUST.
- Protect the recovery window. Watch the battlefield while the order resolves. If an attack telegraph appears, prepare to move or use Fall In rather than queueing another command automatically.
- Spend the MP you earned with intent. Save it for a Hustle Tech that addresses a visible threat or creates a clear damage window.
Because JUST inputs improve the command and economy, accuracy compounds over a run: better timing gives more MP, and cheaper Hustle Techs leave more options for later rooms. The exact value of each command can change with balance updates, so judge the current build by the result shown in game.
Regroup and retreat before the formation breaks
Use Fall In as a positioning tool
The beginner guide specifically recommends Fall In when the squad stretches out and before a telegraphed attack. It is not merely an emergency button. A scattered formation can leave support Cobuns exposed, delay attacks, and make the next rhythm phrase unsafe. Regroup after a fast enemy pushes through the line, when terrain separates members, or just before a boss begins a clearly signaled strike.

Make regrouping part of your rhythm: move into a safe pocket, call Fall In, wait for the line to close, and then issue the next command. If the danger is already landing, moving away may be safer than insisting on a perfect formation. Surviving with a weaker command is better than losing a Cobun while trying to improve the score.

Give every Hustle Tech a job
Do not spend MP simply because the meter is full. Tie each Hustle Tech to a defined purpose: break a dangerous wave, interrupt or punish a boss window, protect the back line, or finish an elite before it reaches your support units. If no such purpose exists, keep the resource and continue positioning.
JUST timing lowers Hustle Tech MP costs according to the beginner guide, so accurate ordinary commands make emergency tools more available. That does not mean using a Tech on cooldown. A cheap action used into a shield, invulnerable animation, or empty lane still wastes the advantage.
Protect Fever instead of forcing it
The guide says successful commands sustain Fever and warns against queueing an unnecessary command during a dangerous animation. When an enemy is about to strike, reposition, defend, or wait for a clean phrase rather than forcing an order to maintain momentum. Fever is valuable only while the squad remains alive and able to exploit it.
Read boss encounters as windows, not races
Bosses reward patience. Watch the telegraph, let the attack resolve or pass, then issue a command when the boss is exposed. Use Fall In before the window if the line has separated. Save a Hustle Tech for the opening when it can connect safely, rather than spending it during a long invulnerable animation.

During a difficult phase, simplify your objective: keep the front line between the boss and support Cobuns, complete safe GOOD commands, and preserve enough MP for the next unavoidable danger. A perfect JUST sequence is useful, but not if it leaves the Ratatan standing in the impact zone.

Ratakaruta are passive run cards, so each reward should make the formation you already chose more dependable. The beginner guide’s order is to strengthen the damage or defense your squad uses, check whether the card advances a wanted Elemental Force, and then decide whether a rarity improvement is better than adding an unrelated effect.
A three-question reward check
- Does it improve what the squad already does? A card that strengthens your main attack shape, front-line durability, or support effect usually has immediate value.
- Does its element advance your intended Elemental Force? Elemental progress can make a modest-looking card useful when it moves the run toward a deliberate threshold.
- Does the rarity upgrade beat a disconnected effect? Compare the actual effect with your current plan instead of taking the card with the flashiest label.
Do not collect every rare card. A powerful passive that does not interact with your formation can be weaker than a common effect that keeps your front line alive or improves the commands you use repeatedly.
Understand duplicate-name rarity behavior
According to the beginner guide, when you obtain a higher-rarity copy with the same name, it replaces the lower-rarity effect, while both copies still contribute to elemental level. That creates a useful distinction: the active passive may improve immediately, but the lower-rarity card is not wasted for elemental progression. Check the card’s displayed effect and your elemental target before deciding whether the upgrade changes your next choice.

Opening rooms: stabilize the line
Use the first encounters to learn how far your starting Cobuns reach and how quickly the formation separates. Establish a front, practice the command pulse, and avoid spending MP on enemies you can defeat with ordinary orders. Early information is a resource: it tells you whether the opening pair lacks protection, reach, or control.
Mid-run: specialize without creating a hole
Once you know the run’s main threat, take rewards that deepen your answer. Add area control if groups are slipping through, defense if chip damage is accumulating, or reach if melee enemies punish every approach. Before accepting a new effect, ask which existing unit benefits and who will protect it.
Elite and boss approaches: reserve options
As a major fight nears, avoid entering with an empty MP meter or a formation already scattered. Complete safe commands, regroup with Fall In, and keep at least one Hustle Tech for a defined emergency. Enter the fight with a plan for the first telegraph rather than an intention to press every button immediately.
Use co-op roles deliberately
The official listing describes online co-op for up to four players. In a group, agree on jobs before the room becomes chaotic: one player can prioritize a durable front and regroup calls, another can maintain ranged pressure, and another can watch for support or crowd-control openings. Do not have every player spend a Hustle Tech on the same target unless the window demands a burst.

If communication is limited, favor formations that remain safe when a teammate misses a rhythm phrase.
Turn a failed run into a specific adjustment
Back at Rataport, the beginner guide suggests reviewing new equipment, unlocks, and class options. Do not change everything at once. Identify the first decisive failure and alter the piece that addressed it.
- If enemies reached the back line, replace or support the front-line role and practice earlier Fall In calls.
- If you ran out of MP, improve command timing and stop spending Hustle Techs without a defined purpose.
- If a boss killed you during a telegraph, reserve movement and MP for that window instead of trying to maintain Fever.
- If rooms were safe but too slow, add reach, area pressure, or a damage-focused reward while keeping one dependable defensive layer.
Begin the next run with that one lesson in mind. A measured adjustment reveals more than rebuilding the entire squad after every defeat.
Early Access means the plan can change
The official Steam listing identifies Ratatan as an Early Access game. It says the September 18, 2025 release includes multiple worlds, characters, weapons, skills, multiplayer, boss battles, and progression systems, while also warning that development details can change. The listing did not set the final-version price in the reviewed information.
An independent wiki homepage reported an announced full release date of October 15, 2026. Because that date is close to the information’s publication window, check the current store listing and in-game patch notes for the actual status before relying on a class interaction, balance assumption, or release feature. Treat class rankings and numerical expectations as provisional.
