If you want to play alone, Ratatan includes a single-player mode. The official listing also contains a developer answer explaining that multiplayer support is present in the current Early Access version, while future updates may expand and improve the game. How online co-op is expected to work
The confirmed flow is straightforward at the feature level: Ratatan provides an online co-op mode, and that mode can accommodate as many as four players. The available official material stops short of specifying the user interface. There is no authoritative description of whether you select “Online,” choose a host, send a platform invite, enter a room code, or use public matchmaking.
Because those details are undocumented, use the following process as a preparation checklist rather than as a claim about exact menu labels:
- Install the same current game version. Ratatan is in Early Access, and updates can change multiplayer behavior. Let Steam or your console store finish pending updates before trying to connect.
- Confirm that every participant owns access to the same supported release. The listings confirm online features, but they do not publish a complete cross-platform compatibility matrix.
- Start Ratatan and look for the online co-op option. The Steam listing confirms that the mode exists; it does not specify the exact location or wording of the control.
- Use the invitation or joining method exposed by the current build. The official sources gathered do not confirm whether that is a friends-list invite, lobby browser, code, or matchmaking queue.
- Check the network requirement before troubleshooting the game itself. On PC, Steam explicitly requires broadband internet and a non-symmetric NAT type.
If a menu or prompt differs from these expectations, that is not evidence that co-op has been removed. Early Access interfaces can change, and the store page does not document every revision.
PC connection requirements: broadband and NAT
Steam’s PC system requirements include a specific online-network condition: “An internet connection with a non-symmetric NAT type (e.g., open or moderate) is required to play online co-op.” You can read the requirement in the official Steam listing.

What the NAT wording means
Network address translation (NAT) controls how devices on your home network communicate with the wider internet. Ratatan’s requirement rules out a symmetric NAT for online co-op and gives open or moderate as examples of acceptable types. The listing does not provide port numbers, router-brand instructions, a port-forwarding recipe, or a separate support procedure for restrictive NAT.
That limitation matters when diagnosing a failed session. You can use the NAT statement as a decision point, but you should not assume that changing a particular router setting will fix every failure. If your network reports a symmetric or restrictive NAT, test from a network with a non-symmetric NAT, check the router or network administrator’s documentation, or contact the game/platform support channel when one is provided. The official Ratatan material does not establish a universal port list or guarantee that a particular configuration will work.
What “broadband” does and does not promise
Broadband is a requirement for the PC version’s online co-op, but the listing does not state a minimum download speed, upload speed, latency target, or data allowance. Steam documents Ratatan for PC with single-player and online co-op. It also lists full controller support, including Xbox controllers and DualShock/DualSense controllers connected over USB. A controller is supported, but the listing does not say that one is required for online play.

The US Xbox store page lists Ratatan for Xbox Series X|S and displays a release date of October 14, 2026. That page also labels the game with “online co-op (2–4),” “online multiplayer (2–4),” and “cross-platform multiplayer.” The listing was observed on October 13, 2026, when that date was still the following day. Because store availability and labels can change, check the live Xbox US listing for the current status before relying on it.

Do not assume that the Xbox phrase “cross-platform multiplayer” means every platform can connect to every other platform. Ratatan’s Early Access status and why it matters
Steam identifies Ratatan as an Early Access title with a release date of September 18, 2025. Keep the game updated and read the current platform listing if an update changes the way sessions are created or joined.

Steam lists full controller support and names Xbox controllers plus DualShock and DualSense controllers over USB. This gives PC players a supported alternative to keyboard and mouse, which may be useful for a rhythm-focused action game. It does not establish that all wireless connection methods, third-party controllers, or console-specific features are supported, and it does not make a controller a prerequisite for co-op.
For a group session, each player should verify that their own input device is recognized before joining. If the game accepts keyboard and mouse for one participant and a controller for another, that behavior is not specified by the store listing; check the controls shown by your current build rather than relying on an assumed input rule.
Troubleshooting an online session
There is no co-op option
Confirm that you are running the current Early Access build and that you are looking at the online mode rather than the single-player entry. Steam’s listing says multiplayer support is in the current version. If the option is still missing after updating, consult the current store announcements or official support channel; the gathered listing does not provide a separate recovery procedure.
A friend cannot join
First verify that both players are using a supported, up-to-date release. Then check whether the current build exposes a friend invite, lobby, or code-based join method. The official sources do not state which method Ratatan uses, so an inability to find a particular button is not enough to identify a fault.
The connection fails on PC
Check the NAT type. Steam requires a non-symmetric NAT, with open or moderate given as examples. If the connection is symmetric or otherwise restrictive, try a network that meets the requirement or consult the administrator of the network. Players are on different platforms
