For most home servers, the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is the better choice: it has more memory options, built-in Gigabit Ethernet, and faster, more numerous USB ports for storage and peripherals. The Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W can work well for a modest service when its 512MB of RAM, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, and single USB 2.0 OTG interface are enough. This recommendation is based on published specifications, not a direct workload benchmark.

Which board should you choose?

Choose the Pi 4 for a general-purpose server

The Pi 4 is the more flexible starting point if you want wired networking, plan to attach USB storage, or expect to run services that need more memory. Its Gigabit Ethernet port avoids relying on Wi-Fi, and its two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports provide more direct connection options than the Zero 2 W. RAM configurations range up to 8GB on the current specification page.

Choose the Zero 2 W for a small, modest service

The Zero 2 W is a reasonable fit when compactness matters and the service has modest memory and connectivity needs. It has 512MB of RAM and built-in 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, but no Ethernet port. If you need a wired connection, Raspberry Pi documentation describes using a USB Ethernet adapter with models that lack built-in Ethernet; that adapter uses the board’s single USB 2.0 OTG interface.

What the hardware differences mean for a home server

Memory and processor

The Zero 2 W pairs a quad-core 1GHz Cortex-A53 processor with 512MB LPDDR2. The Pi 4 uses a quad-core 1.8GHz Cortex-A72 processor and is available with 1GB, 2GB, 3GB, 4GB, or 8GB of RAM according to Raspberry Pi’s current specification page. Those are specification differences, not a measured server speed comparison: clock speed and processor model alone cannot establish how much faster a particular service will run.

Networking

The Pi 4 has built-in Gigabit Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi. The Zero 2 W has 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and no built-in Ethernet. For a server that should stay on a wired local network, the Pi 4 is the more straightforward choice. A USB Ethernet adapter can add wired networking to the Zero 2 W, but it adds another component and uses its limited USB connection.

USB and storage

Both boards have a microSD card slot for the operating system and data. The Pi 4’s two USB 3.0 ports and two USB 2.0 ports make it easier to connect external storage and other peripherals. The Zero 2 W has one USB 2.0 OTG interface, so using USB storage and adding Ethernet or other peripherals requires more careful planning.

  • Orange Pi Single Board Computers is open source.

The specifications establish port types and counts, but do not provide a comparable home-server storage benchmark or establish long-term storage reliability for either board.

Size and power setup

The Zero 2 W’s smaller form factor can suit a compact installation; the Pi 4 is the broader option when connectivity and memory matter more than minimizing board size. For Pi 4, Raspberry Pi specifies 5V DC through USB-C with a 3A minimum, and its setup guidance recommends a 5V, 3A supply, including its 15W USB-C supply. The Zero 2 W product brief specifies 5V DC input; match the power supply to the board’s connector and requirements. A microSD card is needed for either board’s operating system and data, and a product listing should be checked to see whether it includes a supply, card, or adapter.

Is the Zero 2 W powerful enough for a home server?

It can be, if the service is modest and its memory and connection needs fit the board. Its 512MB of RAM, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, and one USB 2.0 OTG interface are meaningful constraints to account for when selecting software, storage, and networking. If you need more memory headroom, built-in wired networking, or several USB connections, the Pi 4 is the safer general-purpose choice.

Setup checklist

  • For a Pi 4, plan for a 5V/3A USB-C power supply and a microSD card.
  • For a Zero 2 W, select a 5V DC supply that matches the board’s connector and requirements, and plan for a microSD card.
  • If using a Zero 2 W on wired Ethernet, include a compatible USB Ethernet adapter and account for its use of the USB 2.0 OTG interface.
  • Check the seller’s listing to confirm which accessories are included; the board specifications do not imply that a power supply, card, or adapter comes in the box.

Production lifetime and availability

Raspberry Pi states that the Pi 4 Model B will remain in production until at least January 2034, while the Zero 2 W product brief gives at least January 2030.
