Separate parts can cost less if you already own compatible essentials; a kit can be better value when you need most of what it includes. To compare fairly, match the same Raspberry Pi model and RAM, define whether you want a headless or desktop-ready setup, and compare local checkout totals with tax and shipping treated consistently.
What counts as a fair comparison?
First decide what you are buying: a bootable headless Raspberry Pi, a kit that includes the board and essentials, or a desktop-ready setup with peripherals. Then compare two ways of reaching that same outcome. A board-only price is not comparable to a complete setup, and an accessory bundle that omits the board is not a computer.

Use the same board generation and RAM tier in both columns. Raspberry Pi announced Raspberry Pi 5 board prices of $45 for 1GB, $55 for 2GB, $70 for 4GB, $95 for 8GB, and $145 for 16GB in 2026. Those are manufacturer-announced board prices, not current local checkout totals or the cost of a full setup. Raspberry Pi’s announcement is the reference for those figures.
| Comparison item | What to match or disclose |
|---|---|
| Board | Same generation and exact RAM tier; distinguish board-only prices from bundles. |
| Contents | Count only what the chosen outcome needs: board, power supply, case or cooling, storage card, display cable, keyboard, mouse, card reader, and guide. |
| Compatibility | Check that the power supply and case suit the chosen Pi generation. Pi 4 and Pi 5 kit contents are not interchangeable in every respect. |
| Existing parts | List what can be reused and what still needs to be bought. |
| Checkout basis | Use the same region and date, and treat tax and shipping consistently. |
| Use outcome | Say whether the comparison is for a headless system, bootable setup, or desktop-ready package. |
When separate parts can cost less
Separate parts can be the cheaper choice when you already have compatible items such as a power supply, microSD card, or display cable. Those items lower your out-of-pocket cost, but make clear that they are reused rather than counting them as free in a comparison of new-purchase prices.

- CanaKit USB-C PiSwitch (On/Off Power Switch for Raspberry Pi 4)
For a desktop setup, count a monitor, keyboard, and mouse only if both options are being compared as desktop-ready. Micro Center notes that a desktop setup needs those peripherals and that any USB keyboard and mouse will work. If you already own them, show that as reuse rather than as a difference in the kit’s contents.
When a kit can be better value
A kit can make sense if you need most of its contents, particularly when it saves the effort or shipping cost of buying compatible components individually. But the label “starter kit” or “desktop kit” does not guarantee that the Raspberry Pi board is included. Read the listing and count the actual components and quantities.

Accessory-only desktop kits
Adafruit lists an Official Raspberry Pi 5 Desktop Kit for $50, accessed October 3, 2026. It includes a case, 27W USB-C power supply, keyboard, mouse, 32GB SD card, two micro-HDMI cables, and a beginner’s guide; the listing explicitly says the Pi computer is sold separately. Price and stock can change, so check the listing at checkout: Adafruit’s Raspberry Pi 5 Desktop Kit.

Micro Center distinguishes its “parts kits,” which omit the board, from its “starter kits,” which include the board and a card reader. Contents also differ between Pi 4 and Pi 5 offerings. Treat those labels as retailer-specific, not as standard definitions; inspect the contents for the exact model you are considering. Micro Center’s Raspberry Pi information explains its kit distinction and desktop peripherals.

Check Pi 5 power and cooling compatibility
For Raspberry Pi 5, Raspberry Pi recommends a high-quality 5V 5A USB-C power supply. A Pi 5 case will not fit a Pi 4. The Pi 5 case includes a fan; an active cooler is another option for an uncovered board under heavy load. These details can change what you need to buy, so do not assume an older supply or case will carry over without checking the model-specific guidance. See Raspberry Pi’s computer documentation.
Calculate your own totals before choosing
- Choose the same board. Record the model and RAM tier for both options.
- Define the finished setup. Decide whether it needs to boot headlessly or include desktop peripherals.
- Inventory each option. Record every included item and quantity, whether the microSD card is preloaded, and whether the setup includes cooling.
- Add only missing essentials. Include the parts needed to reach your chosen outcome, using compatible components.
- Separate new purchases from reuse. Note existing compatible parts separately so the reader can see both the new-purchase total and their personal out-of-pocket cost.
- Use one checkout basis. Compare prices for the same region and date, including tax and shipping on the same basis.
- Account for unused bundle items. If the kit includes things you will not use, say so rather than treating every item as value.
There is no established, matched, location-specific total here that proves kits or separate parts are universally cheaper. Retail prices, contents, availability, tax, and shipping vary; calculate the two complete local totals before naming a winner.

Why boards are also sold without accessories
The Raspberry Pi Foundation’s starter-kit document explains the enduring trade-off: “Very early on, we decided that we would offer the bare-bones Raspberry Pi board without accessories: that way, cost-conscious customers get the lowest possible price, provided they can beg or borrow USB peripherals, a power supply and an SD card.” The document describes an older Pi 3-era kit, so it illustrates the reason for a bare board option rather than current kit pricing.
