Use SSH to work in your Raspberry Pi’s terminal; use VNC to see and control its graphical desktop. Both require the Pi to be reachable over a network and the relevant service to be enabled. If finding the Pi on a network or configuring access is a barrier, Raspberry Pi Connect is another option for remote terminal and desktop access.
SSH or VNC: which fits the job?
| Access method | What you get | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| SSH | A secure remote terminal session | You need to run commands or administer the Pi from a command line. |
| VNC | A remote desktop screen share you can control with a mouse and keyboard | You need to interact with graphical applications or the Pi’s desktop. |
These are different kinds of access, not competing ways to display the same session. Raspberry Pi’s documentation describes SSH as terminal access and VNC as desktop screen sharing (Raspberry Pi remote access documentation). It does not publish a controlled speed, bandwidth, or latency comparison, so there is no documented basis here to call one categorically faster or more reliable.

What you need before connecting
For either method, the Pi needs a network connection and must be reachable from the computer you’re using. For local-network access, put both devices on the same network, or use a VPN that connects them. You’ll also need the Pi’s hostname or IP address and valid account credentials (Raspberry Pi remote access documentation).
A headless Pi—one set up without a monitor, keyboard, and mouse—still needs network connectivity. Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance covers both wired Ethernet and wireless networking (headless setup documentation). Ethernet is optional; it is not a requirement of SSH or VNC.

Set up SSH for terminal access
The SSH server is disabled by default in Raspberry Pi OS. You can turn it on during a fresh installation in Raspberry Pi Imager, or enable it afterward through the desktop Control Centre, raspi-config, or a documented manual method (Raspberry Pi SSH setup instructions).
- Enable SSH on the Pi. Choose the setup route that matches your situation: Imager for a fresh install, or Control Centre or
raspi-configon an existing installation. - Find the Pi’s hostname or IP address. The client computer must be able to reach that address over the network.
- Connect from another computer. In a terminal, run
ssh <username>@<ip address>, replacing the placeholders with your Pi account name and its address. - Authenticate. Raspberry Pi’s guidance says SSH defaults to username-and-password authentication and recommends key-based authentication to improve security (SSH key guidance).
Set up VNC for desktop access
Raspberry Pi OS includes the wayvnc server, but the server must be enabled before a VNC client can connect. Raspberry Pi’s instructions describe enabling VNC in the desktop Control Centre or with raspi-config; they identify TigerVNC as one client option (Raspberry Pi VNC setup instructions).

- Enable the VNC server on the Pi. Use the desktop Control Centre or
raspi-config. - Install or open a VNC client on the computer you’ll use. TigerVNC is an option listed in Raspberry Pi’s instructions.
- Connect to the Pi’s hostname or IP address. Use the account credentials requested by the client.
VNC is useful when terminal commands are not enough—for example, when the task requires seeing or operating a desktop application. It provides graphical access rather than replacing SSH’s terminal session.
When Raspberry Pi Connect may be a better fit
Raspberry Pi Connect is an alternative for remote desktop and terminal access. Raspberry Pi’s documentation describes it as requiring no manual network configuration (Raspberry Pi Connect documentation). Consider it if you want remote access but do not want to discover the Pi’s address or arrange a direct local-network or VPN path yourself. Check the official documentation for current setup and availability details.

Secure remote access before relying on it
- Prefer SSH keys where appropriate. Raspberry Pi recommends key-based authentication to improve SSH security; its default is username-and-password authentication (SSH key guidance).
- Use a secured network or VPN where possible. Raspberry Pi’s security guidance recommends a secured wireless network or VPN for remote access (remote-access security guidance).
- Be careful when enabling a firewall remotely. Allow the remote access you depend on before turning the firewall on, or you could cut off your own connection (remote-access security guidance).
Quick choice
- Choose SSH if you need a command line.
- Choose VNC if you need to see and operate the graphical desktop.
- Consider Raspberry Pi Connect for remote terminal or desktop access when manual network configuration is inconvenient.
