First identify the board and check its temperature and throttling while the actual stream is running; then improve airflow and placement. Add model-compatible cooling only if the measurements show sustained heat or throttling. A temperature reading by itself does not prove a cooling problem.
Start by identifying the Pi and measuring the real stream
Cooling advice depends on the exact Raspberry Pi model, case and attachments. Do not apply Pi 5 temperature guidance or accessory recommendations to an unidentified board. Record the setup before changing it:

- Board model and revision, plus the case, HATs and other attachments.
- Power supply and cable, stream software, and how video is captured or played.
- Video resolution, frame rate, bitrate and encoding method.
- Room or enclosure ambient temperature at the installation site, especially during the hottest expected operating period.
While the representative stream is running, observe the Pi’s temperature and whether it throttles or loses performance. Repeat the observation during the warmest period you expect the installation to face. The stream’s workload depends on its software and encoding path; without those details, it is not possible to tell whether the Pi is doing substantial CPU work or offloading it.

Raspberry Pi’s guidance says the vast majority of its devices use internal dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) and thermal throttling to stay within their working range, without extra cooling. That does not mean every configuration will remain comfortable under every sustained workload or ambient condition.

What the temperature figures do—and do not—tell you
In its Pi 5 cooling article, Raspberry Pi says boards begin throttling at 80°C and throttle further at the maximum temperature of 85°C. Those are the manufacturer’s stated thermal thresholds, not recommended target temperatures. The statement appears in a Pi 5-specific article; do not assume it establishes the behavior or accessory needs of every model.
Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 results come from controlled tests, not a 24/7 YouTube stream. In its open-air test, an uncoolled Pi 5 was about 65°C at idle; sustained synthetic stress took the processor above the 85°C thermal limit. With the Active Cooler, it stabilized around 64°C under that test. With the Pi 5 fan case, reported sustained-load maxima were about 72°C with the lid removed and 74°C with it fitted. These figures are not predictions for your stream, enclosure or location in India.

- This is Official Active Cooler for Raspberry Pi 5
- Combines an Aluminium Heatsink with a Temperature-Controlled Blower Fan to accelerate heat dissipation
- How to Install: Connect the 4pin cable to the fan header on RPi 5, and fix the Active Cooler via spring-loaded push pins
For Pi 5, Raspberry Pi documents temperature-controlled fan thresholds: off below 50°C, low speed (30%) at 50°C, medium (50%) at 60°C, high (70%) at 67.5°C and full speed (100%) at 75°C, with 5°C hysteresis. The thresholds can be adjusted through device-tree overlay settings. They describe the Pi 5 fan behavior documented by Raspberry Pi, not a universal fan curve for other boards.

Not necessarily. Decide based on sustained behavior under the actual stream, not the fact that the Pi is on continuously. If it stays within its working range without throttling or performance problems, a fan may add noise, dust exposure and maintenance without solving a demonstrated issue. Persistent high workload or high ambient temperature can make additional cooling useful.

No India-specific temperature adjustment or live-stream thermal study establishes that a particular city, season or setup needs a fan. Measure ambient temperature and Pi behavior at the deployment site rather than assuming a climate-based threshold.
How to improve cooling, from simplest to more involved
1. Give the board clear airflow
- Keep ventilation openings unobstructed and allow air to circulate around the board.
- Avoid a heat-trapping location or enclosing the board where hot exhaust cannot escape.
- If the board is uncased, consider mounting it on edge so air can circulate on both sides. Do not lay it flat against a heat-insulating surface.
These are airflow and placement measures, not a guarantee of a particular temperature reduction. Raspberry Pi’s historical Pi 4 thermal testing illustrates that orientation and clearance affect airflow, but its test results and products should not be transferred to other models.

2. Check passive cooling and enclosure fit
A passive heatsink or ventilated enclosure may suit a setup that needs modest heat dissipation without a fan. Check that the product is compatible with the exact board and that the case, HATs, cables and mounting leave adequate clearance. No evidence here establishes a universal winner among passive cooling, airflow changes and fans for an unspecified build.

If a Pi 5 still shows sustained heat or throttling after placement improvements, compare the Raspberry Pi 5 Active Cooler with the Pi 5 case fan. Raspberry Pi’s tests show these options managing its own sustained synthetic workload; they do not show which is best for your YouTube stream. The Active Cooler is for Pi 5, and the case fan is appropriate only when that case form factor suits the installation. Confirm connector, case, HAT and cable clearance against the complete build before buying.

- Run the same representative stream after each change, under comparable ambient conditions.
- Compare sustained temperature and whether throttling or performance symptoms persist.
- Also consider noise, airflow, fit with the case and attachments, dust exposure, maintenance, power and connectivity, and local cost and availability.
Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to tell whether placement, passive cooling or a fan made a difference. There is no independent comparison here of these options on a 24/7 YouTube stream in India.
Common overheating and streaming symptoms: what to check
- Temperature rises, but there is no observed throttling or stream problem: Keep monitoring during the actual workload and improve unobstructed airflow before adding a fan. A single temperature reading does not establish cooling failure.
- Pi 5 reaches the manufacturer’s throttling range under sustained load: Check placement first; if the behavior persists, assess a Pi 5-compatible Active Cooler or case fan and re-test. Do not apply Pi 5 thresholds or accessories to another model.
- The stream stutters or drops while the Pi is warm: Record the stream workload and whether throttling occurs, but do not assume heat is the only cause. Check power-supply and connection symptoms separately; a fan will not fix an electrical supply fault. The available evidence does not establish that a particular installation has an undervoltage problem.
- A cooler does not fit the build: Re-check the exact board, enclosure, HATs, connector and cable clearance. Do not force a model-specific cooler into an incompatible case.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a different way to avoid leaving a Raspberry Pi or other computer running at home; it does not cool or repair the Pi, and it plays uploaded videos rather than streaming from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
