The system is designed to give herders time to secure livestock and reduce the pressures that can lead to retaliatory harm to wildlife. The Pi is one component of a custom camera, AI, power, connectivity, and monitoring setup—not a complete warning system on its own.
How the Predator Early Warning System works
WWF-Pakistan partnered with LUMS’s National Center of Robotics and Automation to develop and deploy an AI-powered Predator Early Warning System. Raspberry Pi Ltd.’s account, published 15 May 2026, says solar-powered camera traps built around Raspberry Pi 4 single-board computers have been installed in high-risk areas since 2022. Raspberry Pi’s project account describes the system’s components and intended use.

- Capture: Cameras at high-risk locations photograph wildlife.
- Identify: An AI algorithm analyzes images for snow leopards and other predators, including foxes, wolves, and Himalayan lynxes.
- Transmit: A local 4G connection carries detections to a central monitoring platform.
- Alert: When a predator is detected near grazing areas or livestock enclosures, alerts can reach field teams and community members.
The Raspberry Pi 4 provides local computing within the camera-trap arrangement. The public project descriptions do not specify the full bill of materials, camera or battery models, or a public build guide, so the system should not be treated as a ready-to-copy Pi project.

A warning has practical value if it arrives in time for people to bring livestock to safety. The project’s conservation logic is to reduce the chance of livestock losses and, in turn, lessen the economic pressure and fear that can contribute to retaliatory responses toward predators. This is a proposed pathway to coexistence, not proof that attacks or retaliatory killing have fallen.

Raspberry Pi Ltd.’s 2026 account says a single predation event can result in the loss of “60–70 animals.” That is context reported by Raspberry Pi Ltd., not a WWF study or a documented typical loss rate. The same account describes a reported shift in how some local people view snow leopards, but it provides no survey method or quantified attitude result.
What field testing changed
WWF-Pakistan’s procurement document describes a pilot intended to test camera functionality in remote snow leopard habitat in the Karakoram-Pamir landscape during both summer and winter. It reports several practical adjustments:

- Faster notifications: Detection-to-notification time was reduced from 12 minutes to less than one minute during the pilot. The document’s publication date is not established in the available extract.
- Clearer images: The camera was upgraded after low-resolution images made it harder to distinguish people from animals.
- Cold-weather power: A redesigned battery addressed failures in cold conditions.
These changes show why a field warning system depends on more than the computing board or AI: usable images, reliable power, and timely delivery all affect whether an alert can help.
Where the project is operating—and what expansion means
Raspberry Pi Ltd.’s account dated 15 May 2026 says camera traps have been installed since 2022 in high-risk zones near human settlements in Gilgit-Baltistan. It describes expansion to additional high-conflict areas in Gilgit-Baltistan, with support from the region’s Forest, Wildlife and Environment Department, as a plan.

Separately, WWF-Pakistan’s Phase II Conservation Officer terms of reference include deployment coordination in Gilgit (Gilgit-Baltistan), Chitral (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), and Neelam (Azad Jammu and Kashmir). These are locations in a role description and intended work; the document does not establish that installations in all three places were completed. It also describes conflict studies across the Himalayan, Karakoram-Pamir, and Hindu Kush landscapes.
Why local maintenance remains essential
WWF-Pakistan’s Community Watcher terms of reference include installation support and ongoing care: cleaning dust and snow from solar panels, clearing vegetation from camera views, monitoring equipment, troubleshooting, and reporting animal movements or possible camera locations. Remote AI hardware still needs people nearby to keep it working and connect it to local knowledge.

WWF-Asia’s Natura account also describes solar-powered camera traps in areas vulnerable to wildlife depredation, connected to an AI-equipped central monitoring system. It corroborates the broad architecture but does not provide a detailed component list.

What is—and is not—established about conservation results
The available project accounts describe the system’s purpose, development, deployment context, and some technical improvements. They do not report a quantified reduction in livestock losses, retaliatory killing, or a population-level change in snow leopards or other wildlife. Nor do they establish deployment counts or a formal impact-evaluation design. The strongest supported conclusion is that WWF-Pakistan and LUMS built and iterated a warning system intended to help communities respond to predator presence earlier; measured conservation outcomes are not established in these accounts.
