For a Raspberry Pi 4, start with H.264 hardware encoding at 1080p30, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube lists 14 Mbps as its recommended H.264 video bitrate for 1080p30 and 5 Mbps as the minimum. Use RTMPS when your FFmpeg setup supports it, send AAC stereo audio, and test the complete stream on your own Pi and internet connection before relying on it continuously.

Choose settings for the Pi and your upload connection

The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is specified for H.264 encoding at up to 1080p30. Raspberry Pi identifies h264_v4l2m2m as the Pi 4 hardware encoder path, but whether it is available and which rate-control options it accepts depend on the operating system, kernel, driver, and FFmpeg build installed on your board. Check the local build before using a command template.

YouTube’s published H.264 live-ingest figures distinguish a minimum from a recommendation. The recommended bitrate is not a guarantee that a particular board or internet connection can sustain it. YouTube advises testing upload capacity with representative motion and audio, then monitoring stream health.

Target YouTube H.264 video bitrate When to consider it
1080p30 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended Use when the source and sustained upload capacity can support it.
720p30 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended A lower-resolution test option if the source or connection is constrained; stability still needs to be verified.

These figures are YouTube’s published live encoder settings; the cited page does not state a publication year. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Pi 4 and Pi 5 use different encoding paths

Raspberry Pi 4

On a compatible Pi 4 setup, h264_v4l2m2m uses the board’s dedicated H.264 hardware encoder. Raspberry Pi describes this fixed-function encoder as having no user-configurable presets. Its documented FFmpeg example writes a file, not a YouTube stream, so treat it as evidence for the encoder name—not as a ready-made live-stream command. The board specification also lists Gigabit Ethernet and a USB-C power input requiring a minimum 3A supply.

Raspberry Pi 5

Do not assume a Pi 4 hardware-encoder command applies to a Pi 5. Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation says H.264 and MJPEG encoding on Pi 5 are implemented in software using FFmpeg libraries, rather than dedicated encoding hardware. In the documented camera-software context, --low-latency can make frames available sooner, at some cost to coding efficiency and potentially maximum frame rate; that is not a benchmark for every FFmpeg input or YouTube setup.

Inspect FFmpeg before choosing encoder options

  1. List the encoders in your installed FFmpeg build:

    ffmpeg -encoders
  2. Check whether the Pi 4 hardware encoder is present. If it is, inspect its local help output rather than assuming that every driver exposes identical options:

  3. Confirm the input device, capture format, dimensions, frame rate, and audio device for your particular camera or source. These details are not specified here, so the input portion of a final command must be adapted to your setup.

  4. Set the output to the resolution and frame rate you intend to test. At 30 fps, a two-second keyframe interval corresponds to a 60-frame GOP. Configure the encoder for CBR and the appropriate bitrate only if the installed encoder accepts those settings; verify its rate-control behavior rather than relying on option names alone.

Use YouTube’s live-ingest requirements

  • Protocol: Prefer RTMPS if supported. YouTube describes it as the secure extension of RTMP and recommends it for YouTube Live. YouTube live encoder settings
  • Video: H.264, CBR, and a two-second keyframe frequency; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo. AAC stereo around 128 Kbps is a practical target when your local FFmpeg build supports it.
  • Destination: Retrieve the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. They are account-specific. Keep the key private and never publish a real key in a script, screenshot, or example.
  • Validation: Test upload bitrate, include the motion and audio your real stream will contain, and watch YouTube’s stream health during the test. A bitrate setting alone cannot establish a reliable continuous connection.

Build a command template, not a one-size-fits-all command

The exact command depends on the Pi generation, input source, capture dimensions and frame rate, audio source, operating system, FFmpeg build, and available upload capacity. The following is a settings outline, not a copy-and-run command; input options, encoder flags, and destination must be supplied and checked on the target device:

ffmpeg [input and audio options for your devices]
  -c:v h264_v4l2m2m [supported CBR/bitrate options]
  [resolution and frame-rate options]
  [GOP/keyframe options: 60 frames at 30 fps for a 2-second interval]
[AAC stereo audio options, around 128 Kbps if supported]
-f flv "[RTMPS ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room]"

Do not paste a key into a public post or leave a real key in shell history or a shared script. Because encoder flags and rate control vary by build and driver, confirm accepted options with the local encoder help and check the resulting stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Raspberry Pi’s encoder note documents the hardware path, not this YouTube output command: Raspberry Pi hardware-accelerated video encoding.

Test the full stream and troubleshoot by symptom

Run a representative test using the actual input, audio, resolution, frame rate, and intended bitrate. Check both the Pi’s encoder output and YouTube’s stream-health feedback. A short successful test does not establish that an unspecified setup will run uninterrupted for an extended period.

Symptom Likely cause to check Next step
FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder The installed build does not expose h264_v4l2m2m, or the current platform uses a different encoding path. Run ffmpeg -encoders; use only an encoder actually present and inspect its help.
Encoder rejects an option or bitrate setting That option or rate-control mode is not supported by the local FFmpeg build, kernel, or driver. Check ffmpeg -h encoder=h264_v4l2m2m where applicable and adjust to the options reported locally.
YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops The configured bitrate may exceed sustained upload capacity, or the input/network path may be unstable. Test upload capacity under representative conditions; consider a lower target such as 720p30 and validate again.
Picture quality is poor at a constrained bitrate The chosen bitrate may be too low for the resolution and motion in the source. Compare the stream against YouTube’s minimum and recommended figures for the selected resolution, while ensuring the connection can sustain the target.
Audio is missing or not accepted The audio input, codec, or channel configuration may not match the device and FFmpeg build. Verify the selected audio input and confirm AAC or MP3 output with the intended stereo configuration.

Copyright and continuous-stream considerations

Using FFmpeg or a Raspberry Pi does not grant rights to the video or audio being streamed. Make sure you have the necessary rights to every recording, song, and other material in the broadcast, and review YouTube’s rules before running a continuous stream. Reusing material without the required rights can create copyright problems; technical settings cannot prevent claims or enforcement.

A continuously running stream also depends on the complete setup: input, encoder, power, network, and YouTube ingest. Neither the encoder flags nor the cited specifications establish a universal uninterrupted runtime. Test the assembled system under representative conditions and monitor stream health.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not stream from a camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
