Choose a single-board computer (SBC) by matching it to the software, connections, storage and setup your project requires—not by comparing processor numbers alone. Raspberry Pi 5 is a strong baseline when its interfaces and Raspberry Pi OS workflow fit. Orange Pi 5 Plus is worth considering when its manufacturer-listed RK3588 hardware, memory options or eMMC socket suit your needs and you can verify the exact board revision and software image. For an embedded product, a compute module may be a better starting point than a conventional SBC.
Start with what your project must run and connect
Before comparing boards, write down the operating system and applications you need, then list every peripheral and interface: GPIO, camera, display, USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi or storage. Confirm that the exact board revision and OS image support those requirements. A processor’s capabilities on paper do not establish how quickly a particular application will run, and no independent comparative benchmarks are available here.
- Maker or learning project: Prioritize the interfaces you need, clear setup documentation and a workflow you can follow. Raspberry Pi 5’s standard 40-pin header and Raspberry Pi OS support may make it a practical fit when its documented connections cover the project.
- Desktop, media or server use: Check the required OS image, memory, storage path, networking and cooling. Do not assume a board’s headline CPU specification proves better real-world results for your workload.
- Embedded or industrial design: Consider whether a module and custom carrier board make more sense than a complete SBC. Raspberry Pi positions Compute Module 5 (CM5) for this kind of application.
How Raspberry Pi 5 and Orange Pi 5 Plus compare
The figures below are manufacturer-reported specifications, not results from a shared test. Orange Pi specifications can vary or appear inconsistent across product materials, so check the exact revision and image before buying.
| What to compare | Raspberry Pi 5 | Orange Pi 5 Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 2.4 GHz quad-core Cortex-A76 CPU, according to Raspberry Pi’s product page: Raspberry Pi 5 specifications. | RK3588 octa-core CPU with four Cortex-A76 and four Cortex-A55 cores, according to Orange Pi product information: Orange Pi 5 Plus product information. |
| Listed memory | 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB and 16 GB configurations on Raspberry Pi’s product page. | 4 GB, 8 GB and 16 GB configurations in the retrieved product information. Other Orange Pi material lists 32 GB; verify the exact revision rather than assuming a maximum. |
| Operating-system information | Raspberry Pi OS is the documented platform. Confirm support for any other distribution and required software before choosing it. | Orange Pi product information names Orange Pi OS, Android 12, Debian 11 and Ubuntu 22.04. Confirm that the image for your exact revision supports the peripherals and software you need. |
| Connections | Standard 40-pin header, Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band Wi-Fi and PCIe 2.0 x1 are listed on the Raspberry Pi product page. Check the official specifications for the remaining ports and your specific peripherals. | Check the exact revision’s manufacturer documentation for the GPIO, camera, display, USB, Ethernet and wireless connections your project needs. |
| Storage and expansion | MicroSD is the common boot medium. M.2 storage requires a separate M.2 HAT or other adapter. | Manufacturer product information lists an eMMC socket. Verify the board revision, boot options and any required storage module or accessories. |
| Power, cooling and enclosure | Raspberry Pi recommends a high-quality 5V/5A USB-C supply; it notes that an under-powered supply may cause problems. The Pi 5 case differs from the Pi 4 case, and active cooling helps under load. | Check manufacturer guidance for the exact revision’s power input, cooling needs and compatible case; requirements are not established here. |
| Dimensions and total build cost | Not stated here. Price and regional stock have not been verified; calculate the full build using the accessories and storage you need. | Not stated here. When Raspberry Pi 5 is the better fit
Keep Raspberry Pi 5 in contention when your project can use its documented connections and you want the Raspberry Pi OS workflow. Its product page lists a 2.4 GHz quad-core Cortex-A76 processor, memory configurations from 1 GB through 16 GB, a standard 40-pin header, Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band Wi-Fi and PCIe 2.0 x1. Raspberry Pi says the model will remain in production until at least January 2036; that is the manufacturer’s lifecycle statement, not a guarantee about local availability.
Budget for storage, power and cooling
Raspberry Pi documentation says, “To function as a computer, your Raspberry Pi requires non-volatile storage containing an operating system (OS) image.” Its getting-started guidance identifies microSD as the common boot medium and recommends at least 32 GB for Raspberry Pi OS desktop editions or at least 8 GB for Lite. Those capacities are Raspberry Pi OS guidance, not universal requirements for other boards or distributions. See Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.
For Pi 5, factor in the recommended high-quality 5V/5A USB-C supply and consider active cooling if the board will run under load. If you want M.2 storage, add the cost and space of a compatible M.2 HAT or other adapter rather than treating PCIe as a ready-to-use M.2 socket.

When Orange Pi 5 Plus is worth considering
Consider Orange Pi 5 Plus if the manufacturer-listed RK3588 processor arrangement, its listed 4 GB, 8 GB or 16 GB RAM options, or its eMMC socket align with your workload and storage plan. Orange Pi product information names Orange Pi OS, Android 12, Debian 11 and Ubuntu 22.04, but a distribution name alone does not establish that every peripheral or subsystem works as required on every release.
Verify the exact board and image before committing
- Match the product revision to the manufacturer’s specification and the OS image download.
- Confirm kernel and device support for each required interface and peripheral.
- Check the power input, thermal solution, boot-media requirements and whether storage modules or other accessories are included.
- Do not assume a 32 GB RAM option: Orange Pi materials are inconsistent, and the retrieved product information lists 4 GB, 8 GB and 16 GB.
The stated hardware does not by itself demonstrate that Orange Pi 5 Plus will outperform Pi 5 in a particular application. Choose it for a verified feature or software fit, not an untested speed assumption.

When a compute module makes more sense
For an embedded or industrial design, compare a module plus carrier board with a conventional SBC. Raspberry Pi positions CM5 for this kind of application and lists optional eMMC and dual 100-pin connectors. The CM5 documentation lists 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB or 16 GB RAM, paired with 0 GB (Lite), 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB eMMC choices. See Raspberry Pi Compute Module documentation.
A module is not a drop-in desktop board: include the carrier board and the connections your design needs in the project plan. Confirm the module configuration and carrier compatibility before specifying components.
