Choose Raspberry Pi 5 for a new build that needs more computing speed, PCIe storage, or newer expansion options. Choose Raspberry Pi 4 if your project already runs well on it, you can reuse the board and accessories, or keeping the full setup cost down matters more than upgrading. The right choice depends on the workload, RAM, power supply, cooling, peripherals, and local prices—not just the board.
What changes in everyday use?
Raspberry Pi 5 uses a 2.4 GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor and VideoCore VII graphics; Raspberry Pi 4 Model B uses the BCM2711 platform. Raspberry Pi described Pi 5 at launch as having “between two and three times the CPU and GPU performance” and roughly twice the memory and I/O bandwidth of Pi 4. Those are manufacturer comparisons, not a guarantee that every application will run two or three times faster.

One concrete comparison comes from Raspberry Pi’s published Geekbench 6.2 multi-core results: Pi 5 scored 1,604±22 with a 4 KB page size, compared with 723 for Pi 4, which Raspberry Pi characterized as 2.2×. The Pi 5 benchmark system used an Active Cooler. Treat this as a result from that test setup, not a prediction for every workload or a test conducted for this article. See Raspberry Pi’s Geekbench comparison.

- Pi 5 is the stronger fit for a desktop you use regularly, heavier computation, or tasks that are CPU- or GPU-intensive.
- Pi 4 can remain a sensible choice for a project that already performs adequately, especially if replacing it would also mean buying a new supply, cooling, storage adapter, or case.
Which RAM configuration should you buy?
Current Raspberry Pi hardware documentation lists Pi 5 configurations with 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 GB of RAM, and Pi 4 Model B configurations with 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8 GB. Available variants can change, so check the current listing in your region before buying. More RAM is useful only if your software and workload can use it; choose based on what you plan to run rather than assuming that the largest configuration automatically makes the board faster.

How do the boards compare on ports and accessories?
| Feature | Raspberry Pi 5 | Raspberry Pi 4 Model B |
|---|---|---|
| USB | Two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports | Two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports |
| Networking | Gigabit Ethernet | Gigabit Ethernet |
| Display outputs | Two micro-HDMI outputs | Two micro-HDMI outputs |
| GPIO | 40-pin header | 40-pin header |
| Camera/display board connectors | Mini 22-pin connectors | Standard 15-pin connectors |
| Notable additions | PCIe interface, power button, RTC, and four-pin PWM fan connector | No equivalent PCIe expansion path listed in the cited board specifications |
The familiar GPIO header and core ports make some projects easier to carry over, but they do not guarantee that every accessory will fit. Pi 5 changes the camera/display connectors, so check the connector and cable requirements for your camera or display, as well as case and HAT fit, before reusing Pi 4 parts. Raspberry Pi’s computer hardware documentation lists the board specifications.
Can you use an NVMe SSD with Raspberry Pi 5?
Yes, with an adapter: Pi 5 exposes a single-lane PCIe 2.0 interface through an FPC connector, not a built-in M.2 slot. Raspberry Pi’s M.2 HAT+ converts that interface to an M.2 M-key slot and supports 2230 or 2242 devices. The M.2 HAT+ Compact supports 2230 devices only. Both are rated for a peak interface transfer rate of 500 MB/s and up to 3 A to M.2 devices; those are interface and power ratings, not a guarantee of an SSD’s real-world speed.

Allow for the adapter, drive, and physical fit in the build. The standard HAT+ can sit above the Active Cooler but does not fit in the Pi 5 case with its lid and stock fan installed. The Compact fits around the case fan but cannot sit over the Active Cooler. Check the current M.2 HAT+ documentation for the exact combination you plan to use. If you do not need PCIe storage, this feature alone may not justify replacing a working Pi 4.

Raspberry Pi’s current guidance recommends a 27 W USB-C supply rated at 5 V and 5 A for Pi 5, compared with a 15 W USB-C supply rated at 5 V and 3 A for Pi 4. That does not mean every Pi 5 owner must replace an existing supply: check that it is compatible and whether it can support the board and attached peripherals in your build.

- With a 3 A supply, Pi 5 limits downstream USB devices to 600 mA.
- A supply capable of 5 A at 5 V supports up to 1.6 A for downstream USB peripherals.
- The fan header and USB ports share the available power budget, so external drives and other power-hungry devices can affect the choice of supply.
Use the official power guidance to check the recommendation against your planned setup. If you already own a compatible supply, assess its capacity and your devices rather than buying a replacement automatically.

No—not for every use. Raspberry Pi author Alasdair Allan says, “For normal usage of your Raspberry Pi, adding cooling is entirely optional.” A long, heavy continuous workload can cause thermal throttling, so cooling becomes more relevant for sustained computation, overclocking, or an enclosure where temperatures matter. Raspberry Pi says passive cooling may be insufficient for heavy loads lasting beyond roughly 200–300 seconds; that guidance is specific to heavy workloads, not a threshold for every task or ambient condition. The same article says a throttled Pi 5 remains faster than an unthrottled Pi 4.
