Ransomware Hits FTAPI: What’s Known About the EU Data-Transfer Platform Incident

FTAPI says ransomware affected one internally operated server, while customer systems and exchanged data were not affected. The attackers’ data-theft claim remains unsubstantiated in the reviewed reporting.

FTAPI says ransomware reached one of its internally operated servers, but its account says the incident did not affect its customer platform or data exchanged through the service. That boundary is the company’s statement as reported by Cybernews—not an independently published forensic conclusion. The attackers’ claim that they took data has not been substantiated in the reviewed reporting.

Was FTAPI hacked?

Cybernews reported on 30 September 2026 that unauthorized people accessed one internally operated FTAPI server at a local site and deployed ransomware. The account attributes the incident details to FTAPI via German outlet Heise Online; the underlying Heise report is not directly available here, so the description is secondary reporting.

FTAPI said it isolated affected systems, brought in external forensic investigators, notified customers and partners after initial findings, met relevant regulatory reporting obligations, and filed a criminal complaint. These are actions the company said it took, rather than independently verified findings about the full extent of access.

How did the attackers get in?

The initial access route was not disclosed in the report. Cybernews said it remained unclear whether the attackers exploited an unpatched vulnerability or used stolen credentials. Neither possibility is established as the cause; the reporting does not support naming a specific vulnerability, phishing campaign, or supplier compromise.

Data Recovery Stick for Windows Data Recovery Software – Photos, Files
  • The Data Recovery Stick requires no technical skills — simply plug it into your Windows computer, click Start, and the software automatically begins scanning and recovering lost files within minutes. Compatible with Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10, & 11, it's designed to be a reliable first step when accidental deletion occurs.
  • Recover photos (JPG, BMP, PNG, TIFF), Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access), Open Office files, MP3 music files, PDFs, RTF documents, AutoCAD files, and HTML web pages. Whether it's personal memories or critical business files, the Data Recovery Stick covers the file types that matter most.
  • Works with hard drives, USB drives, SD cards, memory sticks, and other common storage formats that use FAT or NTFS file systems — making it a single solution for hard drive recovery, USB drive recovery, SD card recovery, and more. Note: a media reader is required for micro SD cards and some mass storage devices.
  • No Installation Required - The Data Recovery Stick runs entirely from the USB drive with no software installation on your computer — helping prevent new data from overwriting the files you're trying to recover. This also makes it ideal for use across multiple computers or in emergency situations where installation isn't practical.
  • Use the Data Recovery Stick on as many computers as often as needed — simply clear the recovered data between uses to free up storage space. Software updates keep the tool compatible with newer systems and devices, backed by 25+ years of data software expertise from Paraben Consumer Software.

Was customer data stolen, or were files sent through FTAPI affected?

FTAPI told Heise Online, as reported by Cybernews, that customer systems and customer data exchanged through its service were not affected. This is the company’s stated assessment, not a publicly demonstrated forensic finding.

The Gentlemen ransomware group claimed responsibility, but the reviewed report said the group had provided little evidence about what it claimed to have taken. A threat or leak-site listing is not proof that data was exfiltrated. Cybernews reported that the listing showed a countdown of roughly five days on 30 September 2026; that was a time-specific detail and does not establish the listing’s status now or whether any material was later published.

Who are The Gentlemen?

Researchers’ descriptions differ, and their assessments apply to particular dates. AhnLab’s ASEC analysis of 11 December 2025 described The Gentlemen as using double extortion—combining encryption with a threat to disclose stolen information—and said there was then no clear evidence of ransomware-as-a-service or of the group being a rebrand or subgroup of another actor. Halcyon’s 2026 assessment later described it as a Qilin splinter, formerly operating as ArmCorp, and as a ransomware-as-a-service operation. These accounts are attributed assessments, not settled facts about the group’s current structure.

Halcyon estimated the group’s core team at roughly 20 members and tracked nearly 300 victim claims spanning more than 66 countries and 20 industry sectors. Those are estimates and tracked claims, not a count of independently confirmed successful intrusions. Sources also give conflicting dates for a 2025 public payment-dispute complaint, so a precise date is not reliable here.

ASEC’s technical analysis describes malware written in Go. It reports that the malware can disable Windows Defender, stop backup and database services, delete logs and traces, and use X25519 and XChaCha20 encryption with per-file key and nonce generation, selectively encrypting larger files. This describes the malware family in general; the sources do not show that these specific behaviors occurred on FTAPI’s server.

Why is the incident tied to Europe’s tech-sovereignty debate?

FTAPI is a Munich-based provider of secure data exchange services for organizations handling sensitive files. Cybernews reported that FTAPI says more than 2,000 businesses and over 1 million people across government, healthcare, and industry use its services. These are company-provided figures reported by Cybernews, not independently audited counts.

The incident appeared amid wider debate about Europe’s reliance on technology providers based elsewhere and about data access, continuity, and control. When presenting a tech-sovereignty package, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was quoted by Cybernews as saying: “We cannot afford to depend on others for the technologies that keep our hospitals running, our energy grids stable, and our services secure.”

A European provider’s location may matter for jurisdiction and legal-access questions, but it does not by itself demonstrate stronger security or resilience. This incident establishes neither that sovereignty policy caused the attack nor that a European service is inherently safer than a non-European one.

What should organizations take from the incident?

The reported separation between an internal server and customer-facing services is relevant, but it is not enough on its own to judge a provider’s security. Organizations evaluating secure file-transfer services can ask for evidence about the controls and recovery arrangements that matter to their own risks:

  • Data location and jurisdiction: where files, metadata, backups, and support data are processed, and which laws may apply.
  • Encryption and key management: how data is protected in transit and at rest, and who controls the keys.
  • Identity and access: how accounts, administrators, and integrations are authenticated and monitored.
  • Incident transparency: what customers will be told, on what timeline, and how the provider distinguishes confirmed impact from an attacker’s claim.
  • Resilience and recovery: how services are isolated, restored, and tested after an incident.
  • Independent assurance and portability: what external security evidence is available, and how customers can retrieve data or move services if needed.

The available reporting does not provide a comparative security assessment of FTAPI and other providers. These are due-diligence questions, not a ranking.

Sources and what remains unconfirmed

The sources reviewed do not independently establish the attack path, the full extent of server access, whether data was exfiltrated, whether the group’s claim is true, or the outcome of FTAPI’s investigation. Until a direct company update or accessible forensic account addresses those points, they should be treated as unresolved.
