Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11A clean, tested backup that was kept offline is usually the more dependable way to recover encrypted files. A decryption tool can be appropriate when trusted responders confirm it works with the exact ransomware variant. Neither choice is safe until affected systems are contained and the recovery environment is clean: restoring into a compromised network can bring the infection back, while an unverified or mismatched decryptor may fail. This is general guidance, not a guarantee for a particular incident.
How the two recovery options differ
A decryption tool attempts to restore access to encrypted files in place, using a tool designed for a particular ransomware family or variant. Its availability depends on researchers or authorities finding a weakness in that malware or otherwise producing a compatible tool. CISA advises consulting federal law enforcement about possible decryptors; it does not endorse using a generic tool on an unknown infection. See the CISA #StopRansomware Guide, revised October 19, 2023.

Backup restoration replaces affected data or systems with copies made before the incident. It avoids depending on a decryptor, but only works well if backups are accessible, sufficiently current, intact, and not themselves compromised. CISA recommends keeping critical backups offline and encrypted and regularly testing their availability and integrity.

| Factor | Decryption tool | Backup restoration |
|---|---|---|
| What must be available | A trusted tool confirmed for the specific ransomware variant. | A sufficiently current, accessible backup that was not compromised. |
| Main uncertainty | Whether a compatible decryptor exists and can recover the affected files. | Whether the backup is complete, clean, and suitable for the required recovery. |
| Operational risk | An untrusted or mismatched tool may fail to recover files. | Restoring before containing the incident can expose clean systems to reinfection. |
| What it does not fix | Decrypting files does not undo data theft or resolve disclosure threats. | Restoring files does not undo data theft or resolve disclosure threats. |

No universal success rate or safety ranking for decryptors versus backup restoration is established by the cited official guidance. The practical choice turns on the incident: variant match, backup integrity and coverage, operational priorities, and the risk of repeat compromise.

What to do before recovering data
- Contain the incident. Follow the organization’s incident response plan and isolate affected devices or network segments. Do not reconnect them simply to try a recovery method.
- Protect unaffected backups. Keep backup systems and copies away from compromised systems. Ransomware may target accessible backups for deletion or encryption.
- Preserve useful evidence where feasible. System images, memory, logs, and relevant malware samples may support investigation. CISA advises preserving volatile evidence when possible.
- Get qualified guidance. Contact law enforcement or a qualified incident responder about the incident and whether a decryptor is available for the confirmed variant. Verify the tool’s provenance and compatibility before use.
- Choose a recovery path based on evidence. If suitable backups exist, evaluate their coverage, freshness, integrity, and the time and cost of restoring priority systems. If considering a decryptor, use one confirmed for the variant and follow trusted instructions.
- Validate before reconnecting. Use the organization’s recovery process to check backups and restored systems, then reconnect only systems considered clean. Document what happened and the lessons for response planning.
Restoring files is not the same as resolving the incident
Ransomware can involve data theft and threats to disclose information as well as encryption. NIST’s Ransomware Risk Management: A Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 Community Profile, Revision 1, published in June 2026, describes these broader risks. Whether files are decrypted or restored, the organization may still need to investigate possible exposure, consider applicable notification obligations, and address extortion threats.
For organizations managing operational technology, NIST’s OT Backup Quick Start Guide, published June 17, 2026, recommends integrating backups into change management, creating them regularly, testing them, and reviewing them during recovery exercises. That guidance is specific to OT environments, not a universal consumer recovery procedure.
