The Union Cabinet has approved a 78-day Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) for eligible railway employees for financial year 2025-26. The official maximum is ₹17,951 per eligible employee. It is a maximum, not an identical guaranteed payment for everyone: the Railway Board applies a monthly wage ceiling of ₹7,000 when calculating PLB, even if an employee’s actual wages are higher.
What the 78-day railway Diwali bonus means
This payment is a one-time Productivity Linked Bonus for financial year 2025-26, not an addition to basic pay or a permanent salary component. The Cabinet-approved structure provides 78 days of wages to employees covered by the PLB rules.

The Press Information Bureau’s 14 October 2026 announcement states: “The maximum amount payable per eligible railway employee is Rs.17,951/- for 78 days.” That wording matters because ₹17,951 is the upper limit under the approved calculation, rather than a flat amount promised to every worker.

₹17,951 is the maximum
An eligible employee can receive up to ₹17,951 for the 78-day period. The final amount depends on the employee’s eligibility and the wage figure used under the Railway Board’s PLB rules. Official material does not publish one universal employee-by-employee payment for every pay level.

The ₹7,000 monthly wage ceiling
Where wages exceed ₹7,000 per month, the Railway Board order says PLB must be calculated as though the wages were ₹7,000 per month. Consequently, an employee cannot claim that the bonus should be calculated on their entire unrestricted basic pay simply because their salary is higher.
For that reason, descriptions such as “78 days of the employee’s full basic pay” are inaccurate. The safer and official formulation is “78 days of PLB, up to a maximum of ₹17,951, calculated subject to the ₹7,000 wage ceiling.”

The Railway Board order defines the covered group as eligible non-gazetted railway employees. It specifically excludes personnel of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF). Employees should therefore check their establishment’s eligibility under the applicable Railway Board order rather than assume that every railway worker receives the payment.
When will the money be paid?
The government says the PLB will be paid before the Durga Puja/Dussehra holidays. The announcement sets the payment timing around that holiday period; an individual employee’s credit date can still depend on the administrative processing of their railway unit.
Why was the bonus approved?
The Cabinet linked the decision to railway performance during 2025-26. The Ministry of Railways reported cargo loading of 1,670 million tonnes and nearly 7.41 billion passengers. The stated purpose of PLB is to recognise the contribution of railway staff and encourage continued improvements in productivity and operations.

The figures show that the 2026 decision continues the established 78-day annual PLB pattern. The number of beneficiaries and the government’s total financial implication are higher for 2025-26, while the stated maximum per employee remains ₹17,951.
What employees should check on their payment
- Confirm your category: verify that you are a covered non-gazetted employee and not excluded under the RPF/RPSF provision.
- Check the wage basis: remember that wages above ₹7,000 per month are brought down to the ₹7,000 ceiling for PLB calculation.
- Look for the official PLB entry: the amount should appear through your railway unit’s authorised payroll or administrative channel before the holiday period.
- Compare with the ceiling, not a full-salary calculation: a payment below ₹17,951 is not automatically an error because ₹17,951 is the maximum.
- Raise discrepancies through your establishment: if an eligible employee receives no payment or sees an unexplained amount, contact the personnel or accounts office handling PLB records.
Common misunderstandings about the 78-day payment
It is not a permanent salary increase
PLB is sanctioned for the specified financial year. It does not permanently raise basic pay, allowances or the employee’s future monthly salary.
Every employee will not necessarily receive ₹17,951
The official figure is a maximum. Individual payments are governed by eligibility and the PLB wage calculation, including the ₹7,000 monthly ceiling.

“Basic pay” does not mean unrestricted basic pay
The announcement refers to 78 days’ wages, while the Railway Board rule limits the wage amount used for employees whose wages exceed ₹7,000 per month. Using an employee’s entire higher basic-pay figure to promise a larger bonus is not supported by the official order.
The bottom line for railway staff
Eligible non-gazetted railway employees covered by the 2025-26 order are due a 78-day Productivity Linked Bonus before the Durga Puja/Dussehra holidays. The maximum is ₹17,951 per employee, calculated under a ₹7,000 monthly wage ceiling; RPF and RPSF personnel are excluded by the Railway Board order. The programme covers 11,40,770 employees and carries a ₹2,009.61 crore financial implication.
