RAID 5 stripes data and distributed parity across at least three drives in the Intel Rapid Storage Technology and QNAP QTS implementations documented here. It can reconstruct data after one drive fails, while reserving capacity equivalent to one drive for parity. The trade-off is that a second drive failure before a rebuild completes can cause data loss, and parity writes make performance dependent on the workload and system.
How RAID 5 works
RAID 5 divides data into blocks and stripes those blocks across the array’s drives. It also distributes parity information among the drives rather than assigning parity to a single dedicated disk. If one drive fails, the remaining data and parity can be used to reconstruct the missing contents. Replacing the failed drive lets the array rebuild its redundancy.
Intel describes parity as “a mathematical method for re-creating data that was lost from a single drive, which increases fault tolerance.” That recovery mechanism protects against a failed drive in the array; it is not a separate copy of your files.
How much usable capacity RAID 5 provides
For the Intel RST and QNAP QTS implementations cited here, the familiar capacity calculation is the size of the smallest drive multiplied by the number of drives minus one. With four equal-capacity drives, that is the equivalent of three drives’ capacity before filesystem and implementation overhead. This example follows from the formula; it is not a performance benchmark.

- Note:The eSATA port on this product does not support the use of a computer’s SATA-to-eSATA adapter. Hot-swapping is not supported. The computer’s eSATA port must support RAID functionality to properly access multiple drive bays via the eSATA port; otherwise, only one drive bay can be accessed.

When drive sizes differ, the smallest drive sets the capacity basis for the array. QNAP recommends matching drive brand, type, and capacity for space efficiency and performance; that is QNAP-specific guidance, not a universal requirement for every controller or NAS.
Performance: reads, writes, and rebuilds
Because data is striped, RAID 5 can read from multiple drives concurrently. Intel says its read performance exceeds that of a single drive. Writes are less straightforward: the system must calculate and update parity as well as write data, so they do not receive the same benefit from striping.

In RAID 1, data will be in a mirror backup. When there is a damaged hard drive, you can directly replace the hard drive, and the data will be recovered automatically. This provides an absolute security for the data
- Super-Large Storage Capacity: The D2-320 USB storage enclosure can support up to two 3.5" and 2.5" SATA HDD, as well as 2.5" SATA SSD, with a maximum capacity of 22TB per drive, providing users with up to 44TB (22TB x 2) of storage space
- Intelligent Temperature Control: The D2-320 HDD enclosure has an intelligent temperature-controlled and low-noise fan that automatically adjusts its speed based on the temperature of the hard disk. This feature ensures that the hard disk operates at its best temperature and provides better heat dissipation
- Tool-Free Hard Drive Installation: The D2-320 external hard drive enclosure features a tool-free hard drive tray design that allows for easy installation and removal of hard drives without the need for any tools. Furthermore, the D2-320 incorporates a brand new Push-lock unique design from TerraMaster, which automatically locks the hard drive tray when you insert the hard drive, preventing the hard drive from falling out or disconnecting
In Dell’s PowerVault ME5 guidance, RAID 5 is rated good for sequential I/O and random reads, but moderate for random writes. Dell lists big data and media/entertainment ingest, broadcast, and past production as use cases for that product. Those are vendor-specific qualitative ratings, not guarantees for other arrays.
During a rebuild, the system has additional work to do and performance can decline. Intel specifically notes degraded write performance during rebuild. Actual results depend on the drives, drive count, controller or software, cache, firmware, request pattern, and whether the array is healthy, degraded, or rebuilding. The cited guidance does not establish a universal speed percentage or rebuild duration.

What happens when a drive fails
RAID 5 tolerates one failed drive. While the replacement is being rebuilt, the array has no remaining one-drive failure margin: Seagate warns that a second drive failure before rebuild completion can lose the array’s data. Rebuild exposure is one reason to follow the exact maintenance and compatibility guidance for the particular NAS or controller.
RAID’s protection is limited to the documented drive-failure recovery mechanism. It does not by itself provide an independent recoverable copy against accidental deletion, file corruption, theft, or loss of the entire enclosure. Keep a separate backup of data you cannot afford to lose.

RAID 5 compared with RAID 6 and RAID 10
| Level | Drive-failure tolerance | Approximate usable capacity | Workload notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| RAID 5 | One drive | Capacity equivalent to all but one drive, based on the smallest drive | Dell rates PowerVault ME5 RAID 5 good for sequential I/O and random reads, with moderate random writes. |
| RAID 6 | Two drives | Capacity equivalent to all but two drives, based on the smallest drive | QNAP recommends RAID 6 for critical data protection, business, and general storage. |
| RAID 10 | A failure in a mirror pair; the result depends on which drives fail | About half of combined drive capacity | QNAP describes excellent random read/write speeds and recommends it for high random-access workloads such as databases. |
These are broad trade-offs, not interchangeable guarantees: capacity and supported configurations depend on the implementation. RAID 6 spends more capacity to tolerate a second drive failure. RAID 10 is a candidate when random-access performance matters and using roughly half of combined capacity is acceptable.
Drive-count support depends on the implementation
RAID 5 requires at least three drives in the Intel RST and QNAP QTS guidance cited here. QNAP’s QTS 5.2.x documentation lists support for three to sixteen disks. Other products may differ, so check the documentation for the specific NAS or controller before planning an array or replacement.
