Raft and Multi-Paxos are consensus approaches that can help replicas agree on an ordered command log. State machine replication (SMR) uses that order to apply commands consistently across copies of a service. Neither algorithm name, by itself, tells you how fast or easy to operate a complete system will be: storage, networking, recovery, membership, and application behavior all matter.
How consensus and state machine replication fit together
Consensus is the agreement mechanism: participating nodes decide which value, or which next log entry, is accepted. SMR is a way to build a replicated service around that agreement. Replicas apply the same commands in the same order to deterministic state machines, so they can maintain matching state.

The distinction matters because agreeing on a log entry is only one part of running the service. A complete implementation also has to persist entries, apply commands, recover after a restart, compact old history, handle membership changes, and define how reads work. The Raft paper presents consensus in this replicated-log context: the log carries state-machine commands in an order replicas can follow.

| Aspect | Raft | Multi-Paxos |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol organization | Structured around leader election, log replication, and safety. Its authors say this decomposition and reduced nondeterminism were intended to make the protocol easier to understand. | Uses the Paxos family for a sequence of decisions. Practical Multi-Paxos descriptions need to specify how repeated decisions work; an explanation of single-decree Paxos alone is not a complete account. |
| Relationship to consensus | The Raft paper frames it as a replicated-log consensus algorithm for state-machine commands. | A multi-decision use of Paxos for agreeing on successive values, such as log entries. |
| What the comparison establishes | The authors state that Raft is equivalent to Multi-Paxos in fault tolerance and performance at the protocol level; this is not a benchmark guarantee for every implementation or workload. | The same protocol-level comparison does not establish latency, throughput, or operational cost for any particular deployed system. |
| Engineering scope | A library may implement the consensus core while leaving storage and network I/O to its integrator; the etcd Raft library is one example. | Implementation details likewise determine how a practical system handles persistence, communication, recovery, and the surrounding replicated service. |
The Raft project describes the algorithm as “designed to be easy to understand.” Its paper appeared at the 2014 USENIX Annual Technical Conference and received a Best Paper Award, as recorded by the USENIX conference. That design goal is useful context, not proof that every Raft implementation is simpler to build or operate than every Multi-Paxos implementation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Multi-Paxos should not be treated as a single universally specified recipe. The Raft paper notes that many presentations focus on single-decree Paxos and may leave Multi-Paxos details underspecified. Separate work has formally specified and verified a Multi-Paxos algorithm; see Formal Verification of Multi-Paxos for Distributed Consensus.
Why an algorithm name does not predict system performance
In steady state, a consensus protocol is only one contributor to the user-visible result. The service may spend time writing a durable log, sending data across the network, applying commands, or waiting for a batch to fill. After disruption, elections, catch-up, restart recovery, and snapshot installation can dominate. Read paths and membership changes also affect behavior.

The etcd Raft library illustrates the boundary between protocol and product: its deterministic state-machine interface expects the same input and state to produce the same output, while users supply transport and storage. That is one library’s design, not a rule for all consensus libraries.
A DISC 2018 paper, “State Machine Replication Is More Expensive Than Consensus”, specifically examines the cost distinction and reports experiments involving Raft and Multi-Paxos implementations. Its subject is a reminder to measure the whole replicated service rather than infer its cost from the consensus protocol alone; it does not establish a universal winner for all deployments.

How to evaluate real Raft and Multi-Paxos options
Compare concrete implementations under the same workload and assumptions. Record the system configuration alongside results so that a latency or throughput figure has a meaningful scope.
- Safety model: Identify the fault assumptions, log-matching and commit rules, and how reconfiguration is handled.
- Progress and recovery: Examine election behavior, quorum availability, timeouts, partitions, restart recovery, and how replicas catch up.
- Steady-state workload: Hold command mix, payload sizes, batching, and durability settings constant; measure client-visible latency and throughput.
- Full SMR cost: Include log persistence, state-machine application, snapshots or compaction, recovery, catch-up, and read semantics.
- Integration burden: Determine who owns transport, storage, membership, observability, and failure testing—the library, the application team, or another component.
- Operational fit: Check language and runtime support, deployment topology, maintenance status, ecosystem, and the team’s ability to diagnose failures.
For a useful comparison, report the topology, fault model, storage durability, workload, and implementation versions with the results. A difference measured with one command mix or storage setup should not be generalized to a different service.
