It can feel like a radio version of Google Earth, but the appeal is the broadcast itself—music, talk, news, or a station ID already in progress—not a playlist you control.
What Radio Garden is
Radio Garden is an online service for exploring live radio stations by location. Its official homepage describes the experience as “Explore live radio by rotating the globe.” The globe gives radio discovery a geographic starting point: instead of searching first by genre or artist, you can browse a place and hear a station associated with it.

Radio Garden’s background is reported as beginning in 2016, when Jonathan Puckey and Moniker launched it after a commission for an exhibition at the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, connected to the Transnational Radio Encounters research project. That origin account is reported by Wired; it is not confirmed here by project documentation.

What makes listening different from choosing a track
A live station does not start a song at its beginning just because you tuned in. You might arrive during a presenter’s segment, a news bulletin, a sports discussion, an advertisement, or a song already underway. Station IDs, weather reports, accents, call-in shows, and local music can make a broadcast feel rooted in its origin.
That immediacy is also the trade-off. On-demand music lets you select a specific track; Radio Garden gives you a live broadcast that you encounter as it is happening. Its globe encourages discovery by place, while search, genre selection, and recommendations are more natural starting points in music catalogs. Neither approach is objectively better: one offers a curated choice, the other a chance encounter with radio.

Wired reported in 2026 that Radio Garden said it managed more than 40,000 stations. That is an attributed figure, not an independently verified count, and it should not be read as a promise that every station is available or working at any given time.

Limitations to know before you settle in
- Some streams may fail or disappear. Wired reports that station streams can stop working or be removed.
- The directory is not exhaustive. It does not include every terrestrial radio station.
- Access can vary by region. Wired reports that listeners in the UK are limited to UK stations because of copyright and neighboring-rights issues. This is a reported product limitation, not independent legal guidance.
Wired also reports that streams can continue after a phone screen turns off. Whether that works in a particular session may depend on the app, device, and stream.
