Before buying or connecting a racing wheel, confirm that the exact wheel and base variant supports your platform. Product families can include separate PlayStation and Xbox versions, and PC compatibility does not automatically mean console compatibility.
Check compatibility before you buy
Start with the platform you plan to use—PC, PlayStation, or Xbox—and check the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact wheel and wheel base. Do not assume that two products with the same family name share the same platform support.

Platform support can depend on the base and wheel
Fanatec’s rules illustrate why the exact components matter; they apply to Fanatec products, not to every wheel brand. Fanatec says its products are compatible with Windows PC, while PlayStation compatibility is built into select licensed wheel bases and Xbox compatibility is supplied by an Xbox-licensed steering wheel. A wheel that works on Windows PC is not necessarily Xbox-compatible. See Fanatec’s Xbox compatibility guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFanatec lists the Gran Turismo DD Pro and ClubSport DD+ as compatible with PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Its FAQ says those bases do not support PlayStation 1, 2, or 3. For platform-specific button mappings, consult the quick guide for the wheel you are using. Fanatec’s PlayStation compatibility FAQ has the details.

Check the specific variant, not just the model name
The Thrustmaster T248 is an example of a product family with separate versions: one documented for PS4, PS5, and PC, and another for Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC. Check the manufacturer’s support page and the retailer listing to ensure the version you are ordering matches your console. The PlayStation version should not be treated as the Xbox version, or vice versa. Thrustmaster’s T248 support page identifies the versions.
Connect the wheel and peripherals the right way
Follow the setup instructions for your exact model. Depending on the wheel, pedals, shifter, and handbrake may connect through the base or directly to a PC; the correct route can affect whether a peripheral works on a console.

For Fanatec Xbox setups, Fanatec says pedals, shifters, and handbrakes should connect through a compatible base. Its Xbox guidance describes USB-only peripherals as PC-only. Confirm that the wheel, base, and connected components are compatible with one another before powering up.

Update, calibrate, and test the wheel
Once the wheel is connected, use the manufacturer’s current instructions for firmware, calibration, and force-feedback checks. For the T248, Thrustmaster recommends checking for driver and firmware updates, confirming startup calibration, and testing force-feedback operation. Other models may use different procedures, so do not apply one wheel’s steps to another.
- Check updates: Find the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and follow its driver or firmware guidance for your platform.
- Observe startup calibration: Check that the wheel completes the startup behavior described in the model’s instructions.
- Test force feedback: Use the manufacturer’s recommended test or a compatible game, and follow the model-specific troubleshooting steps if feedback does not operate as expected.
- Check button mappings: Use the relevant quick guide when platform-specific controls or button positions are unclear.
Make sure the mounting surface can handle the setup
A desk may be sufficient if it can hold the wheel securely. A wheel stand or cockpit is an optional alternative when you need a dedicated mounting solution. Check that the desk, stand, or cockpit fits the selected equipment and is rated for its hardware. Fanatec’s compatibility guide also advises checking that wheel-side and base-side quick releases match when applicable.
