Rabbit R1 Launch Failure: What Went Wrong and What Changed

Rabbit R1’s launch was a product-experience failure, not proof that the underlying idea was impossible. Rabbit promised a $199 dedicated AI device that could understand natural-language requests and take actions across services. In WIRED’s May 2024 launch-era review, the R1 was slow, limited, inconsistent and sometimes inaccurate, earning a 3/10 rating. Rabbit continued releasing software afterward, but later updates do not change what early buyers experienced.

What Rabbit promised at launch

Rabbit introduced the R1 at CES in January 2024 as a purpose-built alternative to doing tasks through separate smartphone apps. Presales opened at $199 launch price — Rabbit Inc., 2024, with shipments expected to begin in late March.

The company said rabbit OS used a proprietary Large Action Model (LAM). Rather than only generating text, Rabbit said the model would infer a user’s intent and operate software on the user’s behalf. Founder and CEO Jesse Lyu described the distinction this way: “Large Language Models, like ChatGPT, showed the possibility of understanding natural language with AI; our Large Action Model takes it one step further: it doesn’t just generate text in response to human input – it generates actions on behalf of users to help us get things done.”

Rabbit’s LAM explanation described a system that would begin with widely used apps, create custom interfaces for service categories and quality-test those interactions. The company also acknowledged that putting a real-time agent on new hardware was difficult. Those statements explain the intended design; they do not establish dependable performance across every service.

What the launch review found

WIRED rated the R1 3/10 in its launch-era review. The findings were one reviewer’s documented experience, not a controlled failure-rate study or a current test of updated software.

Slow and restricted service interactions

Connections to third-party services were slow, and available actions were narrower than the product’s broad “do things for me” pitch suggested. The device could appear capable in a demonstration yet offer few useful choices in an ordinary interaction.

Unreliable physical controls

WIRED reported inconsistent wheel scrolling. A control that behaves differently from one interaction to the next undermines the speed advantage a dedicated device is supposed to provide.

Answers that could be wrong or poorly prioritized

The review found answers that were sometimes inaccurate or failed to lead with the requested information. On April 24, 2024, when asked for the date of the next total solar eclipse, the R1 gave April 8, 2024—the date of an eclipse that had already occurred.

Weakness on concrete computer work

In a spreadsheet task, the device omitted columns. That matters because an action agent is judged by whether the finished artifact is correct, not merely whether it produces a plausible explanation.

Recording quality and areas that worked better

WIRED criticized recording quality. The same review reported more positive results for translation and some camera-description tasks, showing that the launch experience was uneven rather than uniformly nonfunctional.

Why “Why can’t it just be an app?” became the central objection

WIRED recorded a reader objection verbatim: “Why can’t it just be an app?” The question goes to the R1’s value proposition. A separate device can offer a simpler, more focused interaction, but it also adds another battery, connection path and piece of hardware to carry. If its service access is slower or less reliable than a phone, the dedicated form factor becomes a liability rather than a convenience.

Ars Technica also covered an unofficial effort to run R1 software on a Pixel 6, describing the software as an Android app running on AOSP. That report supports the criticism that parts of the experience were software-defined. It does not prove that the dedicated hardware had no engineering value, nor that every R1 service worked on a phone.

Launch claims about privacy and hardware

Rabbit’s launch announcement said the R1 did not have an always-listening mode and that its microphone recorded only after the user pressed push-to-talk. It also said the rotating camera blocked its lens by default and that most computation was handled in data centers.

These are launch claims, not an independent audit of present-day privacy behavior or current privacy terms. Anyone evaluating a used or updated R1 should check Rabbit’s current documentation rather than assume that the original description answers every privacy question.

Rabbit’s response and continued development

On May 2, 2024, Rabbit said it had sold more than 100,000 units — Rabbit Inc., 2024. This was a company-reported figure, not an independently audited adoption statistic.

Rabbit said it was taking user and media feedback seriously. It listed early changes involving battery behavior, time zones, GPS, Bluetooth, meeting recording, translation, weather and time, and language-model behavior. The company claimed up to 5x idle battery performance improvement — Rabbit Inc., 2024; that is a company-stated improvement, not an independent benchmark.

Rabbit’s dated changelog records first deliveries, later software releases, teach mode, expansion to the EU and UK in August 2024, RabbitOS 2-era features in 2025 and more recent work. The changelog demonstrates continued development, but it does not independently establish reliability, sales quality or user satisfaction. Rabbit’s current support index lists R1, OS3, ordering, payments, shipping, warranty and returns topics; it does not by itself confirm current inventory or pricing.

In September 2025, TechRadar quoted Lyu acknowledging: “After launch, we realized there was a big gap between the high expectations of our users and the original software experience we delivered.” That admission aligns with the distinction between an ambitious concept and a disappointing first release.

Was the R1 a failure or an unfinished product?

The fairest answer depends on the standard being used:

Question What the launch evidence supports
Did the product match its promise for early buyers? No. WIRED documented slow interactions, limited options, inconsistent controls and incorrect or incomplete results.
Was every function unusable? No. Translation and some camera-description tasks were reported more positively.
Was there a measured universal failure rate? No. The reviewed evidence is a launch review, not a statistical study.
Was Rabbit abandoned immediately? No. Rabbit’s changelog records continuing software development and regional expansion.
Did later updates prove the launch was successful? No. Subsequent development cannot retroactively fix the original customer experience.

On the evidence available, “launch failure” accurately describes the mismatch between the promise and the first broadly reviewed experience. “Permanent failure” would go beyond the evidence.

How the R1 compares with using a smartphone

The practical comparison is not a specification sheet; it is whether the device completes common tasks with less friction than a phone.

  • Task completion: the R1’s spreadsheet omission and limited service actions show why finished, verifiable results matter more than conversational demonstrations.
  • Reliability: slow connections and inconsistent scrolling reduce the benefit of a one-purpose device.
  • Answer accuracy: the eclipse-date error illustrates the risk of trusting an answer without checking it.
  • Speed: a smartphone can expose the native app, account state and controls directly; the R1 adds an agent layer that may take longer.
  • Battery: Rabbit claimed up to a fivefold idle improvement after updates, but the reviewed sources provide no independent head-to-head battery test.
  • Controls: the R1’s wheel and push-to-talk interaction are distinctive, yet launch-era control inconsistency was a practical drawback.
  • Privacy: Rabbit described push-to-talk recording and cloud processing at launch; current behavior and terms require current documentation.
  • Cost: the $199 figure is historical and should not be treated as today’s price.

What is still unknown

No reliable launch failure rate, return rate, active-user rate or independently measured adoption statistic was established in the reviewed material. Current R1 stock, regional availability, retail pricing and the status or commercial terms of the announced Perplexity integration are also unverified. Those gaps make a current buying recommendation difficult without checking live Rabbit documentation and listings.

Bottom line

Rabbit R1 failed its launch moment because the delivered experience did not meet the scale of its promise. WIRED’s 3/10 review documented concrete problems with speed, controls, accuracy and task execution, while the “Why can’t it just be an app?” objection exposed the unresolved value of carrying separate hardware. Rabbit’s updates and changelog show that the company kept working on the product. That makes the R1 a continuing software project—not a successful launch.
