QuickBooks Time is most compelling for businesses already using QuickBooks that want employee time entries connected to payroll or accounting. Its scheduling and mobile time capture cover core workforce needs, while Elite adds project tracking and geofencing. The trade-off is a monthly base fee plus a per-user charge, and Intuit says an active QuickBooks Online account is required. The prices below are Intuit’s U.S. listings observed for this review; confirm the current offer and checkout total before subscribing.
What is QuickBooks Time?
QuickBooks Time is a subscription service for tracking employee work time and managing schedules. It was formerly called TSheets; Intuit’s FAQ states, “TSheets is now called QuickBooks Time.” Its strongest fit is a team that wants time records to connect with QuickBooks workflows rather than keep timekeeping separate from payroll or accounting.

Intuit’s U.S. product pages list monthly pricing as follows. Both tiers include one admin in the base fee; the per-user charge is additional. Your recurring subscription total depends on the number of users billed.

| Plan | Monthly base fee | Monthly fee per user | Included admin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium | $20 | $10 | One |
| Elite | $40 | $12 | One |
For example, using those listed rates, a team with five users would pay $70 per month for Premium ($20 + 5 × $10) or $100 per month for Elite ($40 + 5 × $12), before any applicable taxes or other charges. This calculation assumes all five people are billed users; confirm how Intuit counts seats for your account.
At the time represented by Intuit’s Elite page, it displayed a 50% introductory discount for three months. Intuit’s offer language says introductory discounts apply to the base price, not necessarily the per-user charges, and that prices and offers can change. Treat that promotion as temporary rather than a recurring saving, and check the live offer and checkout price before purchase. Workforce Payroll bundles are separate offers; their pricing should not be confused with standalone Time Premium or Elite rates.

Do you need QuickBooks Online to use QuickBooks Time?
Yes. Intuit’s U.S. product page states that an active QuickBooks Online account is required to use QuickBooks Time. That prerequisite matters if you are evaluating it as a standalone time clock or plan to connect it to a different accounting system.
Intuit also lists integrations with QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Online Payroll, QuickBooks Desktop, and third-party payroll or accounting solutions. Specific account requirements or additional fees may apply, so confirm that your existing edition and workflow are supported before choosing a plan.

What does QuickBooks Time Elite add over Premium?
Premium covers core time entry and scheduling. Intuit describes workforce app access, alerts, a time kiosk, and customer support among its plan functions. Elite adds tools for teams that need more job-level visibility or location-based prompts.
| Capability | Premium | Elite |
|---|---|---|
| Time entry and scheduling | Included | Included |
| Workforce app, alerts and time kiosk | Included | Included |
| Project estimates versus actual hours and project progress/activity feed | Not listed for this tier | Included |
| Timesheet signatures | Not listed for this tier | Included |
| Mileage tracking | Not listed for this tier | Included |
| Geofencing | Not included | Included, with setup |
The clearest reason to pay the higher Elite rate is a need to compare project estimates with actual hours, monitor project progress, or prompt clock-ins around job sites. If your team primarily needs time capture and scheduling, Premium is the more relevant tier to assess.

Changing plans later
Intuit’s help documentation says upgrading gives access to projects, geofencing, and signatures. If you downgrade, previously tracked time remains, but the project activity feed and other project features are lost. Geofence reminders stop; historical timesheet signatures remain accessible as attachments. Consider those changes if you expect to move between tiers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDoes QuickBooks Time track employees’ location?
Intuit says the mobile app logs an employee’s location when they clock in and updates it throughout the day. GPS accuracy requires cell service. Geofencing is an Elite feature and must be set up.
Best Value
- AUTO-ALIGNING PUNCH CLOCK: Top-loading card feed automatically aligns each punch for clean, accurate time entries; no manual adjustments needed; reduces errors that slow down payroll
- RELIABLE TIME CARD MACHINE PERFORMANCE: Consistent printing keeps employee time records accurate pay period after pay period; automatic resets for Daylight Saving Time and short months mean less maintenance for busy managers
- VERSATILE TIMEKEEPING FOR ANY WORKPLACE: Records arrival, break, lunch, and departure times across 3 in/out punch cycles per day; double-sided time cards cover up to 31 days; choose 12-hour or 24-hour military time format
- COMPACT DESIGN, FLEXIBLE PLACEMENT: Small footprint fits on a desk or mounts on a wall to suit offices, retail, warehouses, and other workplaces; backlit LCDs show time, date, and day at a glance; tamper-proof security lock guards against time theft
- COMPLETE BUNDLE, READY TO USE: Includes 100 pyramid time cards, 2 ink ribbon cartridges, 2 security keys, and a 10-slot time card rack; everything a small business needs to start accurate employee time tracking without additional purchases
There is an important distinction between device permission and employer access. Intuit says the app may request GPS points while a worker is off the clock to determine whether the worker entered a geofence. Those points remain on the worker’s device rather than being saved on Intuit’s servers, and administrators cannot access off-clock location data. Administrators may require location settings to be set to “Always.” Employers should check the workplace rules and employee-notice requirements that apply where they operate.

Intuit says the workforce app works with iPhone, iPad, and Android phones and tablets. Its Time Kiosk can run on an iOS or Android tablet or on a computer; the device is not included in the subscription. Intuit’s reviewed documentation does not identify a preferred hardware model.
QuickBooks Time pros and cons
Potential advantages
- Time records can fit into QuickBooks accounting and payroll workflows, with other payroll and accounting integrations also listed by Intuit.
- Scheduling, mobile time capture, alerts, and a kiosk support several ways of managing team time.
- Elite adds project estimates versus actual hours, project progress, signatures, mileage tracking, and geofencing.
- Intuit documents what happens to tracked time and certain project data when an account is downgraded.
Trade-offs and caveats
- An active QuickBooks Online account is a stated prerequisite, even though integrations with other products are also listed.
- The monthly charge combines a base fee and a per-user fee, so the total rises with the number of billed users.
- Project and location capabilities that may justify the higher price are in Elite rather than Premium.
- Location features depend on device permissions and connectivity, and require employers to consider applicable privacy and notice rules.
- Intuit’s published savings and review-count claims are dated vendor statements, not independent evidence of results for a typical customer today.
Are Intuit’s savings and review claims proof of results?
No. Intuit reported average gross payroll-cost savings of 4.26% among businesses that said they saved money, based on a survey of 595 U.S. customers in January 2023. That is a vendor-reported survey result, not proof that a new customer will achieve the same savings or that it is typical across all users.
Intuit also cited more than 100,000 five-star reviews collected in December 2022 across iOS and Android for time tracking. Because the count reflects reviews collected at that date, it should not be read as a current review total. Neither claim establishes present-day reliability, support quality, or value compared with another service.
Verdict: Is QuickBooks Time worth it?
QuickBooks Time is worth evaluating if you already use QuickBooks Online and want time entries tied into that ecosystem. Premium is the more direct fit for core timekeeping and scheduling; Elite has a clearer case when project reporting, mileage, signatures, or geofencing are operational requirements. The decision comes down to whether those capabilities justify the recurring base and per-user fees for your team. If you do not use QuickBooks Online, or need independent evidence on service quality and comparative value before buying, the available evidence here does not resolve that fit.
