Usually, no—not for editing company data once a QuickBooks Desktop Plus subscription is inactive. Intuit says you can export existing data, and your company file remains stored on your device, but an inactive license does not grant editing access. What you can do depends on your product, account status and release year.
What happens when a QuickBooks Desktop subscription ends?
Intuit distinguishes between the software license and the company file. The file stays on your device, but an inactive Desktop Plus license prevents you from editing company data. Intuit says you can export existing data; reactivating the subscription or purchasing a new license can restore the file to a readable QuickBooks Desktop format. So, an installed copy is not proof that the license is active, and a canceled subscription does not by itself mean the local company file has been deleted. Do not rely on being able to keep working simply because the program opens.
Which product and account status do you have?
“QuickBooks Desktop” covers different products and license arrangements. Check the product name in your Intuit account and whether its subscription is active, still within its billing period, suspended or expired. - Desktop Plus: Intuit says it can be used until the end of the current billing period. Once the license is inactive, editing company data is not available.
- Payroll: Payroll subscriptions and services have their own terms; do not assume that a Desktop license alone keeps payroll functions available.
- Older standalone license: The subscription rules for Desktop Plus do not automatically describe a separately licensed older edition. Check the specific product and version rather than assuming an old installation can be used indefinitely.
- Enterprise: Enterprise remains available by subscription, so its availability and terms differ from the discontinued new-sales options listed below.
Can a new customer still buy QuickBooks Desktop?
For the U.S., Intuit stopped selling new subscriptions for QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus and Enhanced Payroll after September 30, 2024. Existing subscribers to Desktop Plus and Payroll can continue renewing. Intuit says Enterprise subscriptions remain available. Does the release year affect whether you can keep using it?
Yes. A license and a supported release are separate issues: even if you can launch an older installation, connected services, support and security updates may have ended for that version.

QuickBooks Desktop 2023
Intuit discontinued Desktop 2023 after May 31, 2026. Its live support, integrated services and critical security updates ended after that date, according to Intuit’s 2023 service discontinuation policy, updated August 5, 2026. If you rely on payroll, payments, online banking, backups or live support, check whether the specific service you need is still available for your release.

QuickBooks Desktop 2024 and Enterprise 24.0

What should you do before canceling or changing licenses?
- Identify the product, release year and account status. Check the Intuit account for the product name, renewal details and subscription status; note whether it is Desktop Plus, Enterprise, Payroll or a separately licensed older version.
- List the services you depend on. Check whether your workflow uses payroll, payments, online banking, backups or live support. A release discontinuation can affect integrated services even when the application remains installed.
- Protect the company file and export what you need. Make a backup and export relevant data before making a license or migration change. Local file retention is not the same as permission to edit.
- Choose a supported way to continue. If your existing plan is renewable, review its renewal terms. If you are choosing another product, compare whether you need a desktop workflow, the Desktop features you rely on, supported releases, connected services and total subscription cost. Enterprise remains a subscription option; QuickBooks Online is another product to evaluate. Intuit’s availability statements do not establish which option will suit your business or its total cost.
Bottom line: the file may remain, but editing requires the right license
Do not treat a saved company file as a usable, editable accounting system. Check your specific license and release, export and protect your data, and confirm that the services your workflow depends on are still supported before canceling or switching.
