To send a large file without a messaging app, use Quick Share to transfer it directly to a nearby Android device or compatible Windows PC. On Android, open the file, tap Share > Quick Share, choose the visible recipient, and have them accept the transfer. Google publishes no fixed maximum file size, but the practical limits depend on the sharing method and the devices involved.
What Quick Share does—and what it does not promise
Quick Share sends a file between nearby devices rather than routing it through a messaging conversation. The receiving device must be discoverable, and a transfer from another person requires the recipient to accept or decline it. Google says nearby sharing works well for large files, but it does not publish a universal file-size ceiling, transfer speed, or guaranteed completion time.

Google’s Quick Share FAQ says the amount you can send depends on the sharing method and the devices involved. That is more useful than treating “no fixed maximum” as a promise that every file will transfer: the receiving device still needs to support Quick Share and have sufficient available storage. For a very large transfer, keep the devices nearby and powered until it completes.
Choose the route that matches the receiving device
| Route | What you need | Connection and proximity |
|---|---|---|
| Android to Android | Quick Share on supported Android devices; the receiver must be discoverable. | Google describes Bluetooth discovery followed by transfer over a local Wi-Fi connection. Its Android-to-Android instructions say devices typically need to be within about 30 cm (1 foot). |
| Android to Windows | Google Quick Share for Windows on a compatible non-Samsung PC; Samsung PC owners should use Samsung’s Quick Share app. | Google specifies Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or Ethernet on the PC, the same network for the PC and Android device, and a distance of no more than 5 meters (16 feet). |
These are route-specific instructions, not a single distance rule for every Quick Share transfer. Google’s guidance is on its Android-to-Windows Help page and Android Quick Share FAQ.

Send from Android to another Android device
- Make the receiving device discoverable. The recipient can open Quick Share and enter Receive mode, or set “Who can share with you” to an option that includes the sender. The screen may need to be unlocked, depending on the device and settings.
- Choose the file. Open it in the app where it is stored, tap the Android Share control, then tap Quick Share.
- Select the recipient. Choose the nearby device shown in the list. If prompted, the recipient reviews the request and taps accept; they can also decline.
- Wait for completion. Keep the devices close and avoid interrupting the transfer. Check the receiving device’s available storage if the file is especially large.
Google’s Quick Share instructions also describe clipboard sharing on selected Android 13-or-later devices. That feature is not available on every Android phone, so the file-sharing steps above are the more broadly applicable route.
Send from Android to a Windows PC
Check that the PC is compatible
Google’s Windows transfer requirements call for a 64-bit PC running Windows 10 or later. ARM-based PCs require Windows 11 or later. The Android device must run Android 6.0 or later, and the PC needs Bluetooth plus Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Google’s page also lists regional availability restrictions; check the live requirements page if availability in your location is uncertain.

Install the right Quick Share app
On a non-Samsung PC, install and open Google Quick Share for Windows. If the receiving computer is a Samsung PC, Google directs users to Samsung’s Quick Share app from the Microsoft Store rather than Google’s Windows app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTransfer the file
- On the PC, open Quick Share and choose a visibility setting that allows the Android phone to find it.
- On Android, open the file, tap Share > Quick Share, and select the PC when it appears.
- Accept the transfer on the receiving device if prompted, then let the transfer finish.
For the reverse direction—Windows to Android—open Quick Share for Windows, select or drag the file into the app, choose the visible Android recipient, and send. The Windows app can also select files or folders.

Set visibility without leaving devices open to everyone
Visibility controls determine which nearby devices can discover yours; they are privacy settings as well as a way to troubleshoot a missing recipient. Android offers options such as Your devices, Contacts, and Everyone for 10 minutes. Google says the temporary Everyone setting returns to the previous selection after 10 minutes, but check the current setting rather than assuming it changed back.
In the Windows app, the available choices include Everyone, Contacts, Your devices, and No one. Prefer a restricted setting appropriate to the transfer, and switch to broader visibility only when needed. Google says Quick Share transfers are encrypted and recipients are asked to accept files from other users; encryption and acceptance do not establish that a file is safe to open. Accept files only when you recognize and expect them.

- The recipient does not appear: Make sure the receiving device is in Receive mode or has a visibility setting that permits discovery. Keep the devices close; on Android-to-Android, Google’s guidance is about 30 cm (1 foot), while Android-to-Windows uses the separate 5-meter limit.
- Bluetooth or connection setup fails: Turn on Bluetooth on both devices. For Android-to-Windows, also confirm the PC has Wi-Fi or Ethernet and is on the same network as the Android device.
- The Windows app cannot find the phone: Recheck Windows version and architecture, install the app intended for that PC brand, and do not run Google Quick Share for Windows as administrator. Google notes that discovery can fail on some networks if the PC lacks Bluetooth Low Energy Extended Advertising.
- No Windows transfer notification appears: Check Windows and Quick Share notification settings. Turn off Focus Assist or Do Not Disturb if either is suppressing alerts.
- A device still seems unsupported: Google’s Files by Google Quick Share Help advises checking Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Location, and proximity. Samsung device users should also check that Samsung’s app is up to date.
- Visibility seems broader than expected: Review the current visibility selection. On Android, confirm whether the temporary Everyone for 10 minutes setting has ended and the previous option is active.
What to expect from a large-file transfer
There is no official number of gigabytes that applies to every Quick Share route, and the sources do not provide a speed benchmark. The receiving device, transfer method, connection conditions, and available storage all affect what is practical. If a transfer does not start, check discovery and connectivity first; if it begins but cannot finish, confirm the receiving device has room and keep both devices available until completion.
