Questionable vs. Doubtful: What NFL Injury Statuses Really Mean

Questionable means uncertain; Doubtful means unlikely; Out means unavailable. NFL status labels are qualitative, not official playing-probability percentages.

Questionable means the NFL team is uncertain whether a player will play; Doubtful means the player is unlikely to participate; and Out means the player will not play. These are qualitative availability labels—not official percentage odds or individualized medical forecasts.

Questionable vs. doubtful: the difference

Status NFL definition What it tells you What it does not tell you
Questionable Uncertain whether the player will play in the game. The player’s availability remains in question. It does not mean a 50% chance, or guarantee that the player will appear.
Doubtful Unlikely the player will participate. The team does not expect the player to take part, though the label is not the same as Out. It does not provide a precise percentage or guarantee an absence.
Out The player will not play. The team reports the player unavailable for that game. It does not explain the diagnosis, recovery timeline, or longer-term roster outlook.

These definitions come from the NFL’s Competition Committee announcement and its injury-report policy. The league does not define Questionable or Doubtful with current numerical odds, so translating either label into a percentage would imply more precision than the status provides.

Why these labels are not playing probabilities

The NFL removed the former Probable category because approximately 95% of players given that designation in prior years played, according to the league’s 2016 explanation. That historical figure applies to Probable—not to Questionable or Doubtful—and should not be used to estimate a current player’s chances.

The game-status report is intended to describe a player’s anticipated availability for the club’s next game. It is a forecast, not a statistical promise. A designation can change if the player’s condition changes, and clubs must update a report after an initial filing when required by policy.

How practice participation fits in

Practice participation and game status are separate fields. The NFL defines practice participation as follows:

  • Did Not Participate: no participation in practice.
  • Limited Participation: less than 100% of the player’s normal repetitions.
  • Full Participation: 100% of the player’s normal repetitions.

A player can have a full practice entry and still carry a game designation; the fields communicate different things. Practice information can help put availability in context, but it is not a mechanical formula for predicting the final decision. The NFL’s injury listings display practice status and game status separately.

When reports are filed—and how to check the latest status

Game-status report deadlines depend on the day of the game. The NFL’s 2026–27 important dates page lists the season’s applicable deadlines and notes that a change in condition after the initial report must be updated. Because reports are game-specific and can change, check the current official listing and any subsequent updates for the game in question rather than relying on a prior-week status or an older article.

The report may include non-injury reasons as well as injuries. NFL listings can identify personal matters or a resting player, for example. A status alone does not establish an injury diagnosis or severity; rely only on the description the club reports.

What the designation means for a fantasy or viewing decision

For a fantasy lineup, a betting decision, or simply knowing whether to expect a player on game day, treat Questionable as unresolved and Doubtful as unlikely—not as a guaranteed appearance or absence. Check for updated team and NFL reports close to kickoff, and make a decision that accounts for uncertainty rather than assigning an unsupported percentage.

Why an injury label cannot predict an individual recovery

Availability can depend on the individual player and the relevant medical process. For concussion cases specifically, the NFL says there is no set timeframe for an individual to progress through the protocol; return decisions involve club medical judgment and independent confirmation of full participation. That concussion-specific example illustrates why an availability label is not a personal recovery forecast, but it should not be taken as a description of the process for every injury.
