Baljeet Singh was sentenced to six years in prison and barred from driving for 10 years after pleading guilty to dangerous-driving offences arising from a fatal 2022 collision in Brossard, Quebec, according to 2026 reports by Hindustan Times and The Times of India. Those reports say Singh admitted he was playing a game on his phone while driving.
What happened in the 2022 collision?
The crash occurred on July 19, 2022, on Highway 30 in Brossard, Quebec. Hindustan Times and The Times of India reported that a tractor-trailer was involved in a seven-vehicle pile-up.
The two people reported killed were 42-year-old Nancy Lefrançois and her 11-year-old son, Loïc Chevalier. An earlier report by Quebec outlet Noovo Info said 10 people were injured; that figure was not included in the two 2026 sentencing reports.
What did Singh admit, and what did the court impose?
In the case reported by the two 2026 outlets, Singh pleaded guilty to dangerous-driving offences causing death and bodily harm. They reported that he admitted playing a game on his cellphone while driving. The sentencing reports do not identify the game.

The reported sentence was six years in prison, along with a 10-year driving ban. The reports do not establish how much custody time, if any, is credited against the sentence, so the remaining time cannot be calculated from these accounts.
What did the judge reportedly consider?
The Times of India reported that the judge treated mobile-phone use as an aggravating factor, while Singh’s lack of prior convictions and remorse were mitigating factors. It also reported that the case included more than 40 traffic infractions over Singh’s last three trips. That is a reported detail about this case, not a broader statistic.

Hindustan Times attributed to Quebec Court Judge Sacha Blais the characterization that Singh was “negligent and demonstrated his disregard for the lives of others,” and reported the judge’s criticism of the “total lack of judgement” in playing a video game while driving. These are the outlet’s reported English-language fragments; a sentencing judgment or transcript was not available to independently verify the wording.
How Singh returned to Quebec
In earlier coverage, Noovo Info reported that Singh was arrested in the United States and returned to Quebec to face justice. That report concerned his return after the crash, rather than the later sentencing.
