Alkyl substitution can make a carbocation easier to form not only by stabilizing the positively charged product, but also by destabilizing the molecule it comes from. A 2022 computational study identifies repulsion between alkyl substituents and the carbon–leaving-group bond as an important contributor to the familiar trend in carbocation formation.
What the study says affects the trend
The familiar pattern is that increasing the number of methyl groups attached to a carbon can lower the energy needed to break its bond to a leaving group heterolytically—that is, with both bonding electrons going to the leaving group. The products are a carbocation and an anion. In the model systems examined, heterolytic C–X bond dissociation energies fell as methyl substitution increased.

That trend is often explained by the greater stability of more substituted carbocations. The computational analysis by Hansen, Vermeeren, Bickelhaupt and Hamlin argues that this is not the whole account: the starting molecule also becomes less stable. Repulsion between its alkyl substituents and the C–X bond destabilizes the parent substrate, helping reduce the energy required for bond cleavage. The authors describe this substrate effect as potentially dominant in solution in many cases. The study’s abstract states that “The traditional and widespread rationale behind the stability trend of alkyl-substituted carbocations is incomplete.”

The researchers considered both sides of the bond-breaking process rather than attributing the energy trend solely to the carbocation product. They decomposed the thermochemistry with a thermochemical cycle and used activation strain analysis to examine the processes contributing to the trend. The point is not that alkyl substitution fails to stabilize carbocations; rather, the energy of the parent substrate changes too, and that change can make a substantial difference to the overall cleavage energy.

Which chemical systems were studied
The paper analyzes model compounds of the form MemH3−mC–X, with methyl substitution levels from m = 0 to 3. The leaving group or bonded partner X was F, Cl, Br, I, H or CH3. The C–I series is used as a representative example, while the authors report the broad behavior across the model systems they examined.
These defined models support a mechanistic conclusion about the systems studied; they do not establish that the same balance applies unchanged to every carbocation, reaction, solvent or enzyme. The paper is a computational analysis, not a laboratory demonstration of reaction yields or a biological study.

What the finding does—and does not—mean
The result broadens the explanation for why more substituted alkyl compounds can form carbocations more readily: both product stabilization and starting-material destabilization can matter. It does not overturn the role of carbocation stabilization, nor does it show that substrate repulsion controls every reaction. The relative contribution depends on the chemical system and conditions.

The authors’ analysis may be useful when reasoning about bond-cleavage energetics and reaction mechanisms. Suggestions that the effect could matter for synthetic planning or biological systems remain questions for further investigation, not outcomes demonstrated by this study.
