Quality assurance (QA) and testing are related, but they are not the same. QA focuses on providing confidence that quality requirements will be fulfilled; testing evaluates software or related work products and can provide evidence that supports that confidence. Testing can contribute to QA, but it is not the whole of quality assurance.
What is the difference between quality assurance and testing?
The clearest distinction is their purpose and scope. The ISTQB Standard Glossary defines quality assurance as “Activities focused on providing confidence that quality requirements will be fulfilled.” The glossary identifies this wording as an adaptation of ISO/IEC/IEEE 24765. Testing, in practical terms, is evaluation of software or related work products against quality expectations. That description is an editorial explanation, not a quotation from a current formal ISTQB testing definition.

| Aspect | Quality assurance | Testing |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Provide confidence that quality requirements will be fulfilled. | Evaluate software or related work products against quality expectations. |
| Scope | A quality-management activity, not inherently one test event. | Evaluation activities that can produce evidence about a product, system, or work product. |
| Relationship | Sets or supports practices that build confidence in quality. | Can contribute evidence to QA, but is not equivalent to the broader concept. |
These definitions describe activities, not job titles or a required organizational chart. A company may assign QA and testing work to separate groups, combine them in one team, or distribute responsibilities across the organization.
How does testing support quality assurance?
Testing gives a team information about whether a product or work product meets relevant expectations. That information can help the team assess quality requirements and make decisions. QA is broader: it concerns confidence that those requirements will be fulfilled, and may include practices beyond evaluating a particular build.
For example, a team might review how it handles requirements and changes as part of its effort to support confidence in quality, then evaluate a build against acceptance criteria to gather product evidence. This is an illustration, not a prescribed process or a claim about a measured outcome.
Testing does not prove that a product has no defects. Its findings are evidence from evaluation; they should not be presented as proof that every possible problem has been ruled out.
Is QA only prevention and testing only defect detection?
No. Those shorthand descriptions impose boundaries that the QA definition does not set. QA is defined by its assurance purpose, not solely as prevention. Testing is evaluation, and should not be reduced to a single purpose such as finding defects. The useful distinction is what each activity is intended to do and what evidence or confidence it contributes.

No particular delivery method defines the distinction. ISTQB describes its CTFL v4.0 syllabus as relevant across Waterfall, Agile, DevOps, and Continuous Delivery. Teams can adapt how they carry out and organize the work while retaining the difference between QA’s assurance purpose and testing’s evaluative role.
What standards say about the terminology
ISTQB’s glossary release notes describe a change in the ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-1 test-level definition in the 2022 edition: a test level is one of a sequence of test stages, typically associated with particular objectives and used to address particular risks. This is a specific terminology note; it does not by itself establish the full comparison between QA and testing.

ISTQB describes CTFL v4.0 as a foundational certification and says its syllabus applies across the delivery methods listed above. Its site also lists accredited training providers. Certification or formal training is optional; understanding the distinction does not depend on purchasing a course.
