QSSR is Sony’s new AI upscaling option for the base PlayStation 5; PSSR is the higher-performance tier for PS5 Pro. FSR is AMD’s upscaling technology, related to Sony’s work through its collaboration with AMD but not interchangeable with either PlayStation feature. Which looks best depends on the game, its implementation and graphics mode: available evidence does not establish a universal winner.
What QSSR, PSSR and FSR mean
Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony’s newly announced, performance-oriented AI upscaling tier for the base PS5. Sony says it uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to make the technology work within that console’s performance constraints. The announcement does not provide a detailed technical specification or numerical performance results. Sony’s QSSR announcement

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s AI upscaling library for PS5 Pro. Sony says PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and has been used to boost effective resolution in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles. That figure is a count of titles using PSSR, not a QSSR compatibility count or a measure of image quality. Sony’s PSSR overview

FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is AMD’s upscaling technology, used through game-specific implementations on supported platforms. Sony says the upgraded PSSR algorithm and neural network grew out of Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD, and points to FSR 4 on PC as another expression of that collaboration. This establishes a connection between the technologies, not that QSSR, PSSR and every FSR version work identically. Sony’s Project Amethyst and PSSR explanation

How the technologies compare
| Technology | Where it applies | What the sources establish | What they do not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| QSSR | Base PS5; a game must add support and offer it as an option. | Sony describes a streamlined, hand-tuned neural network designed for PS5 performance constraints, with clearer detail and greater image stability as goals. | A complete supported-game list, matched resolution and frame-rate figures, or a controlled image-quality comparison. |
| PSSR | PS5 Pro; implementation and graphics modes vary by game. | Sony describes PSSR as its PS5 Pro AI library and says it has been used in more than 50 titles. Ubisoft details upgraded PSSR behavior in several modes in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. | A matched head-to-head result against QSSR or FSR across the same games, scenes and settings. |
| FSR | Platform- and game-specific; support depends on each game’s implementation. | Sony links FSR 4 to its AMD collaboration. IO Interactive says 007 First Light uses upgraded PSSR by default on PS5 Pro and FSR 3.1.5 on other platforms. | That different versions or platform implementations produce equivalent results under identical conditions. |
Sony’s corporate presentation calls its updated PS5 Pro technology “PSSR 2.0” and describes machine learning that enhances clarity and delivers 4K visuals at high frame rates. That is Sony’s description, not a matched benchmark showing how it compares with QSSR or FSR. Sony corporate presentation
What matters when judging upscaling
Detail reconstruction
Upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution output from an image rendered at a lower resolution. Sony and its studio partners call out fine detail in elements such as foliage, hair, fabric and particles. These are qualitative descriptions, not results from a common test of QSSR, PSSR and FSR.

Stability in motion
A still image can conceal problems that appear as the camera or objects move: fine detail may shimmer, flicker or disappear. Sony’s QSSR partners emphasize temporal stability, while Ubisoft’s account of upgraded PSSR in Assassin’s Creed Shadows discusses challenges involving moving vegetation, particles, transparency and noisy ray-traced effects. Those observations describe particular game implementations, not a universal result for either technology. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows technical article

Performance and image quality
Upscaling can help a game produce a higher-resolution output from a lower-resolution rendered image, but that alone does not tell you how much frame rate improves—or whether a particular mode improves image quality without another trade-off. Sony says QSSR is tuned for base-PS5 constraints; the sources do not provide comparable measurements for input resolution, output resolution, frame rate and latency across the three technologies.

Early QSSR games: Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games patched to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option. The feature is therefore game- and patch-specific; its presence on PS5 does not mean every PS5 game uses QSSR. Sony says it plans to make QSSR broadly available to PlayStation developers, but has not published a complete compatibility list or schedule. Sony’s QSSR announcement
Insomniac Games’ Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology, described QSSR as adding “more pixel-level clarity and stability” to Wolverine’s environments. Sucker Punch Productions’ Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry said QSSR resolves fine detail in Ghost of Yōtei with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. These are developers’ descriptions of their own games, not independent lab measurements. Sony’s QSSR announcement

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
Independent hands-on coverage reported especially strong visible gains in Wolverine and less dramatic gains in Ghost of Yōtei. That difference is a reason to judge QSSR game by game, not proof that it will produce the same improvement—or outperform PSSR or FSR—in other titles. The available coverage examines only these two games and does not establish a cross-title benchmark. Eurogamer’s hands-on coverage
Which should you choose?
- On a base PS5: Look for QSSR in a supported game’s patch notes or graphics options. The feature does not apply automatically to the entire PS5 library.
- On a PS5 Pro: Check which PSSR modes the game offers. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows account, for example, discusses upgraded PSSR in Performance, Balanced and Quality modes; those labels and results are specific to that game’s implementation. Ubisoft’s technical article
- For FSR: Check the specific game and platform. IO Interactive’s 007 First Light is one example of different choices by platform: upgraded PSSR by default on PS5 Pro and FSR 3.1.5 on other platforms. This does not make those implementations a controlled comparison. IO Interactive on 007 First Light
For a meaningful visual comparison, use the same game, scene and graphics mode where possible, and look at motion as well as still detail. Without matched tests, a single “best upscaler” ranking would overstate what is known.
