QSSR and AMD FSR are separate upscaling technologies, not two versions of the same feature. Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution for standard PlayStation 5 games on October 1, 2026, while AMD FSR is a family of technologies integrated into supported games and, for some features, exposed through AMD Software. The available sources do not provide a matched test, so they establish neither a universal image-quality winner nor a QSSR-versus-FSR frame-rate advantage.
What QSSR and FSR are
QSSR stands for Quick Spectral Super Resolution. Sony describes it as an AI upscaling library for standard PS5 games, developed from Project Amethyst, Sony’s graphics AI collaboration with AMD. Sony calls QSSR a quick evolution of PSSR and positions it as a performance tier for standard PS5; PSSR remains the higher-end feature for PS5 Pro.

The collaboration does not make QSSR another name for AMD FSR. AMD documents FSR as its own evolving family of game-rendering technologies. Its features and hardware requirements vary by generation and by the specific capability a game implements.

| Comparison | QSSR | AMD FSR |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Standard PlayStation 5, according to Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement. | PC game support varies by FSR generation, feature, game integration, GPU, and technical requirements. |
| Where enabled | An optional graphics setting added by a supported game update, according to Sony. | Usually integrated by a game developer; specified compatible PC titles can also expose supported FSR features through AMD Software. |
| Named initial games | Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, named by Sony as the first QSSR titles. | Not stated as a single list in the cited AMD FSR documentation; compatibility is organized by generation and feature. |
| Image-quality evidence | Sony says QSSR improves detail and image stability on PS5. Insomniac Games also describes sharper pixel-level detail and more stable environments in Marvel’s Wolverine. | AMD says its current ML-based FSR Upscaling improves detail and temporal stability and reduces ghosting compared with FSR 3.1. |
| Direct QSSR-versus-FSR test | Not stated in the reviewed sources. | Not stated in the reviewed sources. |
| Matched performance result | Not stated in the reviewed sources. | Not stated in the reviewed sources. |
For QSSR, availability is game-specific: the console alone does not guarantee that every PS5 game offers it. Sony says updates for the two named titles add QSSR as an optional graphics setting. Check the current game update and console’s graphics options to confirm whether it is available in a particular game.

FSR support depends on the generation and feature
“FSR support” is not one universal hardware rule. AMD’s compatibility table separates FSR 1, FSR 2, FSR 3, and its Redstone suite. AMD GPUOpen lists FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 for discrete Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 GPUs. Its documentation also lists analytical fallback options—FSR 2.3.4 and FSR 3.1.5—for RX 500-series and equivalent GPUs, subject to the stated shader model and API requirements. These distinctions concern AMD’s documented implementations; they do not indicate QSSR compatibility.
AMD GPUOpen identifies FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 as a June 2026 release and says it added support for RX 7000 discrete GPUs. This is a version and release note, not a comparison with QSSR.
Do not confuse FSR with Radeon Super Resolution
AMD Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) is a separate, driver-level upscaler for supported Radeon hardware. AMD recommends native FSR when a game provides it and advises against running RSR and FSR together, because applying both can degrade image quality. Neither RSR nor an AMD Radeon GPU enables QSSR; QSSR is Sony’s PS5 game feature.

Which produces better image quality?
The available evidence does not establish a universal winner. Sony says QSSR improves image detail and stability on standard PS5. AMD’s claim about improved detail, temporal stability, and reduced ghosting compares its ML-based FSR Upscaling with FSR 3.1—not with QSSR. Different platforms, games, rendering settings, and implementations mean those statements cannot be treated as a head-to-head result.
In its French PlayStation Blog announcement, Sony reproduced this statement from Insomniac Games about QSSR in Marvel’s Wolverine: “Le QSSR apporte davantage de netteté au niveau du pixel et de stabilité à nos environnements, révélant encore plus de détails dans les rues animées de Madripoor, les ruelles denses de Shinjuku et de nombreux autres lieux que Logan explore tout au long de son périple.” In English, the statement says QSSR brings greater pixel-level sharpness and stability to the environments, revealing more detail in places Logan explores. That English rendering is a translation of the French statement, not Insomniac’s original English wording.
TechRadar reports that Digital Foundry tested QSSR in both initial games and described its potential as remarkable. This is a qualitative assessment reported secondhand by TechRadar; it is not a quantified image-quality result or a controlled comparison against AMD FSR.

Does QSSR or FSR increase frame rate?
The reviewed sources do not establish that QSSR itself raises frame rate, and they provide no matched QSSR-versus-FSR frame-time or FPS comparison. Upscaling can help a game reach a target output resolution by reconstructing an image from a lower internal rendering resolution. Whether that translates into higher frame rates or a steadier experience depends on the game’s implementation, settings, and hardware.
AMD markets FSR as a performance-boosting family and publishes performance figures for particular combinations of games, features, and hardware. Those figures are not QSSR results and should not be used to predict a QSSR uplift on PS5.
What a fair performance comparison would require
A meaningful head-to-head test would need the same game and comparable settings, with output resolution, internal rendering resolution, hardware, and image-quality mode held constant. The reviewed sources do not provide that test, so no QSSR-versus-FSR percentage or FPS difference is supported.

Can you choose between QSSR and FSR in the same game?
Usually, this is a comparison of different platforms and implementation contexts, not two interchangeable toggles a player can select side by side. QSSR is a PS5 option when a game update implements it. FSR must be implemented by a game or, for specified compatible PC titles and features, made available through AMD Software. A game’s supported platform and settings determine what the player can actually choose.
If you already own a standard PS5, Sony’s announcement describes QSSR as a feature for that console; it does not require buying a different console simply to access the option. Whether it appears depends on the game and its update.

How to decide which matters for your setup
- On standard PS5: Look for QSSR in the graphics options of a supported, updated game. Sony’s first named titles are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
- On PC: Check the exact FSR generation and feature supported by the game, then compare that requirement with the GPU and API requirements in AMD’s documentation.
- When judging image quality: Compare the modes in the game you play at your chosen output resolution. Neither Sony’s statements nor AMD’s separate claims establish a universal cross-platform winner.
- When judging speed: Look for measurements from the same game and comparable settings. Do not transfer AMD’s product-specific performance figures to QSSR.
