A dynamic code may also depend on a redirect service that can change or become unavailable. What determines whether a QR code still works?
A QR code encodes data for a reader to scan. That data may be a web address, contact details, Wi-Fi information, or other supported content. DENSO WAVE, QR Code’s developer, says the format can encode numerals, letters, kanji, symbols, binary data, and control codes; it became an ISO international standard in June 2000. A static code contains fixed information. If it encodes a full website address, scanning it will continue to produce that address while the symbol can still be read. The code does not update when a page moves, however, so its destination can break even though the code still scans.

Dynamic codes
A dynamic workflow can encode a short URL that redirects to another destination. The destination can be changed after the code is made, which is useful when a printed sign or package cannot easily be replaced. That flexibility depends on the redirect continuing to work. Provider accounts, subscriptions, shutdowns, and plan terms can affect availability, and the QR pattern alone does not reveal those terms. OASIS Secure QR Code Authentication Version 1.0
How long does a QR code last?
There is no generally applicable lifespan in days or years. A static code can remain decodable for as long as its printed or displayed pattern remains readable, but the information it contains may become outdated or its destination may disappear. A dynamic code may stop reaching its destination if its redirect setup or service stops working. The actual duration depends on those conditions, not on a countdown in the symbol.

Physical condition matters too. Dirt or partial damage may not prevent decoding, but readability depends on the amount and location of damage, print quality, and the reader. Why did a QR code stop working?
- The destination changed or disappeared: A code may scan correctly but lead to a deleted page, a moved site, or obsolete information.
- A redirect no longer works: If the decoded value is a short or unfamiliar URL, a redirect service may sit between the code and the intended page.
- The underlying information is outdated: Wi-Fi credentials, contact details, or other encoded data may have changed.
- The symbol is hard to read: Smudges, tears, low contrast, small print, or design overlays can interfere with scanning.
How to check a QR code that stopped working
- Scan or decode it, then inspect the result. Do not follow an unfamiliar link automatically; first check what the code contains.
- Look at the decoded address. If it is the intended full URL, the code is consistent with a static code. Try the address directly and check whether the page still exists.
- Investigate a short or unfamiliar URL. It may be a redirect. Check the relevant provider account, code status, redirect settings, and plan terms if you manage the code.
- Inspect the physical code if it will not scan. Check for dirt, damage, low contrast, small size, or overlays. A fresh print may help if the encoded data and destination still work.

How to choose a QR code for long-term use

For fixed content, use a static code that points directly to a stable destination, then maintain that destination. If you need to change a destination after printing, a dynamic code can help, but check the provider’s terms and plan for the possibility that its service may change. Another option is a redirect on a domain you control; that gives you more control over the redirect, but you still need to maintain the domain and its configuration.
