A QR code does not need a redirect: it can encode a web address directly, so a scanner opens that address without first passing through a managed link. A browser-based generator can also create the QR image on the device, but “client-side” alone does not prove that a particular tool sends no data to a server. What a QR code does—and what it does not
A QR code is a two-dimensional data carrier, not a destination or redirect service by itself. It can hold different types of data, including a URL. DENSO WAVE says QR Code was developed in 1994 and describes features such as compact printing, reading from different angles, and error correction that can recover some data if a symbol is damaged; recovery depends on how much is damaged. If a code contains a website address, scanning it generally presents that address to the phone. What happens next depends on the address and the website or service behind it. Some QR workflows instead encode a managed URL that forwards visitors to another destination. In that case, the forwarding behavior belongs to the URL’s resolver or service—not to QR technology itself. GS1 discusses this distinction in its guidance on redirection from scan to content and in its explanation of Digital Link URIs in QR codes.
What “client-side” means for generation
Client-side means that some processing happens in the user’s browser or device rather than on a remote server. For a QR generator, that can mean the browser turns the supplied text or URL into the QR image locally. That describes where generation occurs; it does not, on its own, establish whether the page makes other network requests, what happens to entered data, or whether the finished code later relies on an online service.

The generator named in the title is presented as 100% client-side, but that specific implementation and its network behavior have not been independently established. To assess a tool’s privacy claims, look for clear technical documentation or inspect its network activity while generating a code. A general client-side label is not a substitute for evidence about the particular product.
Static and managed QR codes: the practical difference
“Static” and “dynamic” are common product labels, but providers may use them differently. The useful question is what the code actually encodes and what service, if any, handles scans.

Choose a direct code when the destination is settled
If the link is unlikely to change and scan-level reporting is unnecessary, a code that directly encodes the final URL avoids a separate managed destination. Check the URL before printing: after distribution, changing the destination generally means replacing the code wherever it appears.

Consider a managed URL when flexibility or logs matter
A managed workflow can be useful if you need to change where a printed code leads or collect scan logs. In exchange, scans depend on the service continuing to resolve the managed address, and available controls depend on the provider. Confirm how destination updates, logging, and service continuity work before using that setup on materials expected to remain in circulation.
How to judge a “no redirects” claim
Ask what the QR code contains, rather than relying on the label alone. If it contains the final website address, the code itself does not need an intermediary redirect. If it contains a short or branded URL that forwards to another page, a resolver is part of the flow. A URL can also redirect after it reaches its own website, independently of the QR generator. GS1’s 2024 redirection guidance describes redirects in the context of GS1 Digital Link; the broader lesson is to distinguish the encoded address from the behavior of the destination service.

What “no paywalls” tells you
“No paywalls” is a claim about access or pricing, not about how a QR code works.
