India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology says the integrated setup encrypted and decrypted test messages; the announcement does not establish a commercial deployment or a satellite link.
What the 5.56-km field trial involved
In a release posted October 3, 2026, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) said the link ran between BISAG-N and IIT Gandhinagar. The ministry described it as India’s first free-space QKD demonstration at this scale; that priority claim is the government’s, not an independently confirmed historical finding. The trial used QNu Labs’ Armos hardware QKD device over free-space optical channels, with a pointing, acquisition and tracking (PAT) system. The announcement says generated keys were integrated with BISAG-N’s Vedic Kavach platform, which it describes as providing post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and quantum random number generation (QRNG). The stated application-level outcome was successful end-to-end encryption and decryption of test messages.
What the reported performance figures mean
| Measure | Government-reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Link distance | 5.56 km | Reported scale of the free-space QKD link in this field trial. |
| Quantum bit error rate (QBER) | Below 5% | The release calls the result stable but does not state the measurement protocol or conditions. |
| Secure key generation rate | 230–260 bits per second (bps) | Reported rate of key generation, not the throughput for encrypted messages. |
These figures come from the ministry’s release, not an independently audited specification. It does not provide the trial duration, weather or visibility, measurement procedures, or details of key reconciliation and privacy amplification. Without those conditions and methods, the figures should not be treated as directly comparable with results from other QKD trials.
#1 Best Overall
- High Quality Material: The socket section of this product is crafted from stainless steel. Stainless steel possesses inherent tensile strength, excellent hardness and toughness, enabling it to withstand significant torque without breaking or deforming. The material has a uniform structure and a solid texture, offering high overall strength and rigidity, and maintaining stable physical properties over the long term.
- Wide Ranging Application: This product features a 0.83 inch/0.86inch double-ended top, with a socket height of 3.5 inches, an outer diameter of 0.9 inches and an inner diameter of 0.83 inches. It is precisely designed to fit automotive wheel lug nut sizes and is compatible with wheel nuts across a wide range of vehicle models, including common types such as SUVs, RVs and lorries.
- Easy to Use: To use, first align the socket tool with the nut on the car wheel, ensuring a precise fit between the socket and the nut. Then securely attach the wrench to the socket; turning clockwise will tighten the nut, whilst turning anti-clockwise will loosen it. No additional tools are required throughout the process, ensuring smooth and seamless operation.
- Practical Functionality: The core practical function of this product is the removal and tightening of wheel nuts, making it ideal for everyday vehicle maintenance, tyre changes and wheel repairs. Whether for routine tightening during regular vehicle maintenance or for removing nuts in the event of a tyre failure whilst driving, this tool performs reliably.
- 10-Prong Design: The 10 prongs on this product ensure precise engagement and stable force application. They fit snugly against the nut's threads, preventing slippage or disengagement during operation and ensuring even force distribution. This not only effectively tightens or removes nuts but also protects both the nut and the socket itself, preventing component damage caused by slippage.
How QKD and post-quantum cryptography differ in this setup
QKD and PQC are related to quantum-era security, but they are not the same technology. Here, Armos handled key distribution over an optical channel using QKD. Vedic Kavach supplied the platform described as using PQC and QRNG. The release says the platforms were integrated so that generated keys could be used for test-message encryption and decryption.
The announcement also says the combined architecture is intended to remain resilient if the physical quantum channel becomes temporarily unavailable. It does not publish the implementation details or threat model needed to evaluate that resilience independently.
What the demonstration does—and does not—show
The reported result is a field demonstration of a free-space link and an integrated test-message exchange. It is not evidence of a production network, commercial availability, or independently verified security performance. The release does not provide apparatus specifications, a detailed protocol, independent replication, or a full security audit.

Satellite-based quantum communication is presented as a possible future direction, not an outcome of this test. QNu Labs CEO Sunil Gupta said the demonstration “paves the way for longer-distance quantum-secure networks and satellite-based quantum communication.” That is an outlook on future work; no satellite link was part of the reported trial.
For organisations assessing quantum-secure communications, this announcement is a signal of field activity, not a procurement specification. It does not establish pricing, purchasing access, or production performance for the demonstrated system.
