Qi2 is the Wireless Power Consortium’s Qi v2.0 generation, introduced in 2023 with a stated 15W tier. What many people call Qi2.2 is officially branded Qi2 25W (Qi v2.2.1), launched in July 2025. It raises the stated tier to 25W and keeps the magnetic-alignment experience associated with Qi2, but a 25W charger cannot make a phone that supports only 15W draw 25W. The iPhone 17 is a confirmed example of a phone specified for Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W; an exhaustive Android list is not established by the launch announcement, so each model and charger must be checked individually.
Qi2, Qi2.2 and Qi2 25W: the names explained
Qi is the global wireless-charging standard maintained by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). The generation launched in 2023 is formally Qi v2.0. Consumer products using its Magnetic Power Profile are marketed as Qi2. The same Qi v2.0 generation also includes an Extended Power Profile (EPP) enhancement that does not use magnets, so “Qi v2.0” by itself does not prove that a product has magnetic attachment. The WPC’s 2023 certification announcement describes both profiles in its Qi2 launch release.

The newer revision is Qi v2.2.1. The WPC’s consumer-facing name for its higher-power tier is Qi2 25W; “Qi2.2” is common informal shorthand rather than the official product label. The WPC announced Qi2 25W in July 2025. When a listing says “Qi2.2,” look for the more useful detail: whether the phone and charger are specifically rated for the Qi2 25W tier.

What actually changed from Qi2 to Qi2 25W?
The power ceiling rose from 15W to 25W
The headline change is the available power tier. Original Qi2 is specified at 15W, while Qi2 25W is specified at 25W. The WPC’s July 2025 announcement calls this “nearly 70% more” power than the original Qi2 tier. A phone must be designed and certified to accept the higher tier; the charger’s label alone does not confer that capability.
Wireless charging power is negotiated between the phone and the transmitter. The practical limit is therefore the lower supported ceiling in the particular phone-and-charger pairing. If the phone is rated for 15W, connecting it to a Qi2 25W transmitter does not turn it into a 25W device. Conversely, a phone specified for 25W still needs a transmitter and power arrangement that can deliver that tier.
Magnetic alignment remains part of the Qi2 experience
Qi2’s MPP uses magnets to center the phone over the charging coil. Correct centering helps maintain the intended coupling instead of relying on a user to place the phone precisely. Qi v2.0 also defines EPP without magnets, which is why a generic “Qi v2.0” claim should not be read as a guarantee of magnetic attachment.

Product descriptions should still be read carefully: confirm that the exact transmitter is certified for Qi2 25W and that the phone has compatible magnetic hardware or an approved accessory arrangement.
The standard revision is not a guarantee of a particular charge time
The WPC says Qi2 25W can charge a smartphone battery from 0% to 50% in about 30 minutes. This is the WPC’s stated capability in its standard overview and knowledge base, not an independent test of every phone. Battery size, the phone’s accepted charging profile, temperature controls, alignment, case or accessory design, and the transmitter’s power supply can all affect the result. Treat “about 30 minutes” as a standards-body claim for suitable implementations, not as a universal promise.
Why a 25W label does not automatically mean faster charging
Wattage is a ceiling for a certified combination, not a speed setting that a charger can force onto a phone. The phone, transmitter and external power supply all have to support the same tier. A 25W transmitter paired with a 15W Qi2 phone remains a 15W-class pairing at most. A 25W-capable phone paired with a 15W transmitter is similarly limited by the transmitter.
Even when both specifications say 25W, the headline number does not describe every minute of a charging session. The phone may manage temperature or battery protection by changing its accepted power. Alignment can change if the phone or case moves. The WPC’s “about 30 minutes” statement is consequently best read as a reference capability for suitable implementations, not a stopwatch promise.
The phrase “nearly 70% more power” compares 25W with 15W at the standards level. It does not mean a battery necessarily reaches 50% in 30% less time, because battery capacity, conversion losses and charging controls differ among phones.

Which phones support Qi2 25W?
Apple iPhone 17 is a named, manufacturer-confirmed example
Apple’s U.S. specification page for iPhone 17 lists “Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W” and identifies magnetic alignment hardware. The phrase up to 25W matters: it states the model’s maximum under compatible conditions, not a guaranteed continuous draw in every situation.
The 2025 WPC announcement does not identify Android models
The WPC’s July 23, 2025 release says that, in addition to Apple iPhone, major Android smartphones would join the Qi2 ecosystem with the launch. It does not name those Android models. That statement therefore cannot serve as a current Android compatibility list. Model availability and specifications can also vary by market, edition and later product updates.
The same release reported that 14 devices, receivers and transmitters had completed Qi2 25W certification testing during the limited launch, while several hundred were awaiting testing. Those are historical launch figures, not the number of products currently available and not proof that a particular phone supports 25W.
| Evidence | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Apple iPhone 17 specification | This named model supports Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W and has magnetic alignment hardware | That every iPhone, or every regional iPhone 17 variant, has identical specifications |
| WPC July 2025 release | Major Android smartphones were expected to enter the Qi2 ecosystem and 14 products had completed launch-period certification testing | The names of current Android models or an exhaustive October 2026 support list |
| A retailer or charger package saying “Qi2.2” | Only that the seller uses the informal term | That the phone supports 25W or that the transmitter is WPC-certified |
How to check whether your phone supports Qi2 25W
Use the exact model number and the exact charger model. A family name or a marketplace title is not precise enough because specifications can differ by generation, region and variant.
- Open the phone maker’s specification page. Search the wireless-charging section for “Qi2” and a stated maximum. “Qi2” without a wattage does not establish 25W support. Look for wording such as “Qi2 wireless charging up to 25W.”
- Separate magnetic support from power support. Confirm whether the phone has built-in magnetic alignment hardware or requires a compatible case or accessory. A phone can support a Qi standard without offering the same magnetic attachment experience.
- Identify the transmitter’s exact model. Do not rely on a product family name. Packaging and the manufacturer’s specification should state the Qi2 25W capability if it is offered.
- Check WPC certification. The WPC says products undergo safety and interoperability testing at authorized independent laboratories before displaying a Qi or Qi2 logo. Use the WPC’s certification information and Certified Products Database to verify the exact transmitter.
- Check the power supply and cable requirements. A transmitter’s 25W output rating may depend on the wall adapter and cable used with it. Buy or use the power supply specified for that product rather than assuming an older adapter can provide the advertised tier.
- Set expectations from the lower limit. The phone’s maximum, the transmitter’s certified maximum and the power system’s capability all matter. Use the lowest applicable ceiling when estimating performance.
Will a Qi2 25W charger work with a Qi2 phone?
Do not infer a guaranteed 25W result from the labels alone. A Qi2 phone that is specified only for the original 15W tier cannot draw 25W simply because the transmitter is marked Qi2 25W. At best, the pairing is limited by the phone’s own specification; compatibility also depends on the exact certified products and their supported profiles.
Before buying, match three pieces of information:
- the phone’s exact Qi2 support and maximum wattage;
- the transmitter’s exact WPC certification and stated output tier; and
- the required wall adapter, cable and any magnetic case or accessory.
If any one of those details is missing, treat a “25W” claim as unverified rather than assuming the phone will charge at that rate.
What to look for when choosing a Qi2 25W charger
Certification before headline wattage
Certification is the most useful first filter. The WPC says its safety and interoperability testing is performed by authorized independent laboratories before a product can display the Qi or Qi2 logo. A certified transmitter is not automatically proof that a particular phone supports its maximum output, but an unverified listing gives you no equivalent assurance.
Pad, stand or multi-position design
A flat pad is suited to charging while the phone remains horizontal. A stand keeps the screen visible and can be more convenient at a desk or bedside. Choose based on how you use the phone; the form factor does not by itself establish Qi2 25W performance.

Included power hardware
Check whether the package includes a wall adapter and cable. If it does not, match the charger’s stated input requirements with an appropriate adapter. A transmitter connected to an under-rated or incompatible power source may not reach its advertised output.
Phone and case alignment
Magnetic alignment depends on the phone or case presenting the intended magnetic arrangement. A thick, misaligned or incompatible case can prevent the coils from centering even when both devices carry a Qi2-related label. Confirm accessory compatibility in the phone and charger specifications.
What “compatible” should mean in a product listing
Prefer listings that identify the exact Qi2 25W certification and distinguish phone support from charger output. “Works with Qi2” may describe a 15W product, a non-magnetic EPP implementation or simple backward compatibility. A clear specification should state the transmitter’s tier, required input power and supported magnetic arrangement rather than relying on a large “25W” graphic.

Common Qi2 and Qi2.2 mistakes
Assuming “Qi2.2” is a separate universal logo
“Qi2.2” is informal shorthand. The WPC’s official consumer-facing branding for Qi v2.2.1’s higher tier is Qi2 25W. Search and compare products using that official wording, then verify certification.
Confusing charger output with phone charging power
A 25W transmitter advertises what it can provide under its supported conditions. It does not upgrade a 15W phone. The phone’s specification remains the controlling limit for that device.
Treating the WPC launch announcement as an Android list
The July 2025 release mentions major Android smartphones but does not name them. Do not publish or purchase from an assumed list based only on that sentence. Check each manufacturer’s current model page.
Repeating the 30-minute claim as a guarantee
“0% to 50% in about 30 minutes” is a WPC statement. It is not an independently measured result for every phone, charger, battery size or room temperature. Keep the attribution and qualification whenever you cite it.

Ignoring regional or revision differences
A phone family can contain regional variants or later updates with different wireless-charging specifications. Check the support page for the exact model sold in your market, not merely a review of a similarly named handset.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the July 2025 launch tells us about the ecosystem
The WPC’s July 2025 release describes Qi2 25W as a response to consumer demand for faster wireless charging and quotes WPC Board chair Fady Mishriki saying: “Consumers will be delighted when they experience Qi2 25W as it delivers nearly 70% more power than the original Qi2.” That is the consortium’s statement about the standard’s power-tier increase, not an independent performance test.
The release’s certification numbers also show why launch-day availability should be treated cautiously. Fourteen devices, receivers and transmitters had completed testing in the limited launch, while several hundred were waiting at that time. Certification and retail availability change, so the current status must be checked by model in the WPC database and by the manufacturer’s latest specifications.

The 2023 Qi2 rollout included companies such as Belkin, Mophie, Anker and Aircharge in its list of pre-announced product makers. Treat a brand mention as a starting point for model verification, not as proof of compatibility.
Frequently asked questions
Is Qi2.2 the official name?
No. Qi v2.2.1 is officially presented to consumers as Qi2 25W. “Qi2.2” is commonly used shorthand, so verify the stated wattage and certification behind the label.
Does every Qi2 device support 25W?
No. Original Qi2 has a stated 15W tier. Qi v2.0 also includes a non-magnetic EPP option. A product must specifically support the Qi2 25W tier for the higher ceiling.
Can a Qi2 25W charger damage a 15W Qi2 phone?
The charger does not force 25W into the phone; the pairing is limited by the phone’s supported ceiling. Use certified products and the specified power supply, and follow the phone and charger makers’ instructions.

Do I need a magnetic case?
Only if the phone itself does not provide the intended magnetic arrangement and you want the magnetic attachment experience. Confirm the phone, case and charger specifications; a generic Qi-compatible case does not automatically provide magnetic alignment.
Where can I verify a charger?
Use the WPC Certified Products Database and search for the exact transmitter model. Certification indicates that the product completed the WPC’s safety and interoperability process; it does not prove that every phone reaches the transmitter’s maximum.
Is 25W always twice as fast as 15W?
No. The standard’s power tier is higher, but charging speed also depends on battery size, temperature management, alignment, accessories and the power supply. The WPC’s about-30-minute claim is conditional and attributed to the WPC.

Bottom line: is Qi2 25W worth seeking?
Seek Qi2 25W when your phone explicitly supports the 25W tier and you want the faster ceiling with Qi2-style magnetic alignment. If your phone is specified only for 15W Qi2, a certified 25W transmitter may still be a useful accessory, but its extra capacity will not raise that phone’s charging limit. Verify the exact phone specification, the exact transmitter’s WPC certification and the required power supply before treating any “Qi2.2” listing as a 25W purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Qi2 and Qi2.2?
