1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose QED speaker cable if you already have a compatible amplifier and passive speakers and can route cable between them. Choose a wireless streaming speaker if you want an all-in-one system, streaming features or multiroom playback—and the model supports your services and devices. Wireless audio still requires electrical power, and Wi-Fi models need a suitable network. Neither option is a universal sound-quality winner.
These are different kinds of audio systems
Speaker cable carries an amplified signal from an amplifier or AV receiver to passive speakers. QED sells several cable lines; its Performance Speaker Cable, for example, has a 2.5 mm² conductor. The appropriate cable depends on the actual run, speaker impedance, installation and compatible terminations—not just the brand or product tier. See QED’s speaker-cable range.

A wireless streaming speaker combines drivers and amplification, then receives audio through supported wireless or network connections. The features vary by model. Sonos lists Wi-Fi and AirPlay 2 for the Five; the Era 100 fact sheet lists Wi-Fi and Bluetooth streaming. The Five also offers Ethernet and line-in, while the Era 100’s auxiliary input uses a Line-In Adapter. “Wireless” describes audio delivery; it does not mean the speaker needs no power cable or supports every service.

You already own an amplifier and passive speakers
QED speaker cable can connect equipment you already have, provided the amplifier, speakers and cable terminations are compatible. A wireless streaming speaker is not simply a cable upgrade: it is a different system, with its own amplification and inputs. Check whether it accepts your sources before expecting it to replace an existing passive-speaker setup.
#1 Best Overall
- Air Gap dielectric for lower capacitance and better timing
- X-Tube technology for low inductance and better current delivery
- Pure 99.999% oxygen-free copper conductors
- Ideal for long cable runs with large cross-sectional area
- Pre-terminated with Airloc Heat Shrink 4mm Banana Plugs
You want fewer signal cables or easier placement
A wireless speaker avoids running speaker cable from an amplifier to each speaker, which can make placement simpler. It still needs electrical power; a Wi-Fi model also needs an adequate network. Ethernet may be an option on particular products such as the Sonos Five, but that feature should not be assumed for other models.
You want streaming or multiroom playback
Check the exact speaker’s support for your phone, operating system, apps and preferred way of grouping rooms. Sonos describes AirPlay 2, app and service control, and multiroom use for the Five. The Era 100 fact sheet documents its own Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and pairing options. These are examples of model-specific features, not guarantees about all wireless speakers.

Your passive speakers need a long cable run
Use the speaker’s nominal impedance and the full cable route to assess the run. QED advises keeping loop resistance—the resistance of the conductor path out and back—at no more than 5% of nominal speaker impedance. Its support guidance gives Silver Anniversary XT with an 8-ohm speaker as an example: at 18 m (59 feet), QED says a frequency-response change becomes indisputable, and describes half that distance, about 30 feet, as a sensible hi-fi limit. These are QED recommendations for its cable and an example speaker load, not universal limits for every cable or installation. See QED’s cable-length guidance.

Because loop length includes the path in both directions, do not compare a single-conductor resistance figure directly with a loop-resistance recommendation. QED explains its measurement approach, including strand and connection effects, in its resistance explanation.

You are comparing the full cost and flexibility
Compare complete setups rather than cable against speaker in isolation. Include the amplifier and passive speakers if you need them, the wireless speaker, and any adapters or cables required for your sources. Check the specific terminals and inputs before buying accessories. Current prices were not established as a like-for-like comparison, so verify prices and availability for the equipment you are considering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the evidence says about sound quality
The cited product specifications and cable guidance do not establish that a QED-cabled passive system or a wireless streaming speaker generally sounds better. QED’s Genesis Report summarizes the manufacturer’s own cable measurements and listening tests; it is not a direct comparison of a complete QED-cabled setup against a wireless speaker. A sound-quality verdict therefore needs to be specific to the speakers, amplifier, room and comparison being made. Avoid treating a cable price or the word “wireless” as proof of better or worse sound.

A quick decision checklist
- Choose speaker cable if you have compatible passive speakers and an amplifier, want to keep using them, and can route cable safely and neatly.
- Choose a wireless streaming speaker if you want an integrated system, and its supported streaming methods, services and inputs meet your needs.
- Before buying either, check placement, power access, network needs where applicable, cable length and terminations, compatibility, and the total cost of the complete setup.
