1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA pytrends 429 Too Many Requests response means requests are being rate-limited, but Google has not published a request threshold or a wait time that guarantees access will resume. Reduce and pace requests, cache results, and retry only a limited number of times with exponential backoff. These steps can ease request pressure; they cannot guarantee a permanent fix. For a supported route, Google has an official Trends API alpha, but access remains limited.
Why pytrends returns 429—and why there is no guaranteed wait time
Google is limiting the requests reaching its Trends service. The pytrends project says the rate limit is not publicly known and describes the library as an unofficial, unsupported API. Its GitHub repository was archived and made read-only on April 17, 2025. The pytrends repository does not provide a universal request quota or a wait interval that will reliably clear a block.

The README mentions one user’s report that waiting 60 seconds appeared to work in that case. That is anecdotal, not a published Google limit or a dependable remedy for every user. Changing a sleep interval alone is therefore not a drop-in cure.
What to change in a pytrends job first
- Pause overlapping work. Stop concurrent jobs and avoid launching new batches while a job is receiving 429 responses. Do not keep retrying rapidly.
- Reduce redundant calls. Request only the terms and time ranges needed, batch sensibly, and cache results so repeated runs can reuse data rather than fetch it again.
- Pace requests. Add spacing between calls and limit concurrency. No specific interval is established as safe for all users, so do not treat a fixed delay as a guarantee.
- Retry cautiously. Use a bounded exponential backoff, ideally with jitter to avoid synchronized retries. If the response includes
Retry-After, wait at least as long as it specifies. Set a retry cap and stop when it is reached rather than looping indefinitely. - Record failures. Log the HTTP status, time, request context, and retry count. This helps distinguish a temporary failure from a job that is repeatedly overloading the endpoint.
Pytrends’ documented TrendReq constructor includes timeout, proxies, retries, and backoff_factor settings; see the project README for its interface. These settings help shape client behavior, but neither retries nor proxies guarantee that Google will accept a request. The README example also uses verify=False; avoid copying that setting casually, because disabling TLS certificate verification weakens connection security.

Which path makes sense if 429s keep disrupting your work?
| Path | Access and support | Integration and data considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Keep using pytrends | Unofficial and unsupported; the repository is archived. Google’s request threshold is not stated. | Least code disruption for an existing integration, but it retains the same fragile access route. |
| Use a hosted wrapper such as trendreq | PyPI’s trendreq project says it routes requests through the CleanScrape Google Trends Actor on Apify and uses proxies and server-side retries. These are project claims, not independently verified guarantees. | It advertises a compatible TrendReq interface, which may reduce migration effort. Evaluate its credentials handling, terms, reliability, data correctness, and any costs before relying on it. |
| Apply for Google’s official Trends API alpha | Google’s documentation says it is accepting alpha applications, while access remains limited; availability is not assured. | Requires adapting to Google’s API rather than assuming pytrends compatibility. It returns consistently scaled search interest, not absolute search counts. |
Google announced the official API alpha on July 24, 2025, saying it would be available only to a very limited number of testers. Its current documentation describes an API that can make it easier to compare dozens of terms, whereas the Trends UI supports comparisons between eight terms. Those are distinct interfaces; neither figure describes a pytrends request limit. Check Google’s announcement and the current API documentation for the latest access status and details.
What the official API’s data means
Google describes the alpha API’s values as consistently scaled search interest, not absolute search counts. The announced rolling data window is 1,800 days (about five years), with daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly aggregation and region or subregion breakdowns. Google says the consistent scaling allows comparisons across requests; this differs from website data scaled from 0 to 100 for each request. If your analysis depends on the meaning or comparability of values, review Google’s documentation before treating API output as search volume.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose based on the guarantee you need
- If you need the fewest code changes, keep pytrends but reduce traffic and use bounded retries, knowing that the unofficial endpoint can remain unreliable.
- If you want to preserve a familiar interface through a hosted service, assess the provider’s terms, security, costs, and operating record rather than assuming compatibility claims mean equivalent support.
- If official access and documented behavior matter most, check whether the Google API alpha is accepting applicants and whether its scaled-interest data suits your use case.
A historical pytrends issue titled “How to avoid HTTP status 429 (too many requests)?” is a user discussion opened October 14, 2022, not a statement of Google policy. Its age is another reason not to infer a current quota or guaranteed workaround from anecdotal reports. The project’s issue tracker contains the discussion.
