Python Workers: How Cloudflare Runs CPython at the Edge

Cloudflare Python Workers run Pyodide, a WebAssembly build of CPython, inside V8 isolates. Here’s how deployment snapshots, JavaScript bindings, and package compatibility fit together.

Cloudflare Python Workers run Python through Pyodide—a CPython implementation compiled to WebAssembly—inside a V8 isolate. They are not ordinary Linux containers: the Workers runtime provides the request lifecycle and platform integrations, while Pyodide executes Python code and connects it to JavaScript and Cloudflare services.

What “CPython at the edge” means

Cloudflare describes Pyodide as CPython compiled to WebAssembly. In a Python Worker, Pyodide runs Python code within a V8 isolate, the execution environment used by Workers. That is different from launching a Python process inside a conventional server operating system or container.

The distinction matters because a familiar Python interpreter does not imply a conventional Python host. The WebAssembly environment and the Workers runtime shape which packages can run and how Python code reaches requests, responses, and platform services. Cloudflare’s How Python Workers Work documentation, last updated July 9, 2026, describes the execution model.

How a Python Worker starts and handles requests

Local development

The documented local workflow uses pywrangler dev. Wrangler selects a Pyodide version based on the Worker’s compatibility date, installs packages listed in the project’s pyproject.toml, creates a V8 isolate, injects Pyodide, and serves the Python code.

Deployment and request startup

  1. Wrangler uploads the Worker code and project packages.
  2. Cloudflare validates the code, creates an isolate, and injects Pyodide.
  3. The runtime executes the entrypoint and top-level imports during deployment.
  4. Cloudflare snapshots WebAssembly linear memory and deploys the snapshot alongside the code.
  5. When a request arrives, the snapshot is used to bootstrap an isolate.

This is Cloudflare’s documented way to move some initialization work to deployment and reduce cold-start work. It describes an optimization mechanism, not a guaranteed latency or a published percentage improvement; the documentation reviewed gives no numeric result.

How Python connects to Workers APIs

Python Workers can use JavaScript globals such as Request, Response, and fetch(), and can access configured Workers bindings for platform resources. The connection uses Pyodide’s foreign function interface (FFI), Cloudflare’s runtime bindings, and the Workers runtime’s support for conversion across the boundary.

Cloudflare recommends the workers module from workers-runtime-sdk for a more Python-oriented interface to runtime globals. When explicit conversion to JavaScript is needed, Pyodide provides to_js. Binding access is granted through Worker configuration; for example, a Worker can be configured to read from and write to a KV namespace. See Cloudflare’s FFI documentation.

In its September 21, 2026 general-availability announcement, Cloudflare said Python Workers natively support platform bindings and that the Workers runtime and Python SDK handle conversion at the RPC boundary. The announcement names Workers AI, R2, D1, Hyperdrive, Durable Objects, Queues, and Workflows among supported service integrations. Those are Cloudflare’s stated capabilities, not a guarantee that every third-party library or usage pattern works unchanged.

Which Python packages work—and why compatibility varies

Pure Python code is not the only consideration. A package that depends on native C, C++, or Rust extensions needs a compatible WebAssembly build to run in Python Workers. A package available for desktop Python or a Linux server is therefore not automatically available in this runtime.

Cloudflare’s GA announcement describes work on the PyEmscripten platform and build tooling to expand package availability. It also discusses HTTP clients, including requests and httpx, whose use had been affected by missing low-level socket support, and describes routing requests through JavaScript fetch and adding socket support. The announcement names openai, langchain, and mcp as packages that can now run in Python Workers. Treat those as examples from the announcement: they do not establish support for every version, optional extra, or transitive dependency.

Cloudflare’s announcement does not establish a complete package compatibility matrix or an exhaustive list of unsupported standard-library modules. Check the current Cloudflare package and standard-library documentation for the specific dependency and version your project needs before committing to a deployment.

A minimal Worker shape

The basic documented pattern is a Python entry file containing a Default class that extends WorkerEntrypoint, with an asynchronous fetch method that returns a Response. Wrangler configuration points to that Python entry file and includes compatibility settings. Cloudflare’s Python Workers basics, last updated June 22, 2026, covers the starter structure.

When Python is loaded dynamically

A deployed Python Worker and Python code loaded dynamically at runtime are distinct cases. For Dynamic Workers that load Python modules, Cloudflare’s Getting started documentation requires the python_workers compatibility flag to load the Python runtime.

What Cloudflare’s GA status does—and does not—tell you

Cloudflare announced Python Workers as generally available on September 21, 2026. Its announcement presents framework and platform support, but GA status does not remove the WebAssembly constraint on native extensions or establish that every package works. For a project decision, verify its required dependencies and the current runtime APIs against Cloudflare’s documentation, and use the Worker’s compatibility date as part of the runtime configuration.
