To learn Python as a complete beginner, start with a guided course or interactive tutorial that teaches programming basics, then practise by writing small programs. The official Python Tutorial is valuable for learning the language, but it explicitly targets people who already know programming concepts—not people learning to program for the first time.
Choose a starting point that fits your experience
If you have never programmed, begin with a resource that explains ideas such as variables, decisions and repetition, and gives you exercises to try. Python’s official documentation is authoritative, but the Python 3.14.7 Tutorial says: “This tutorial is designed for programmers that are new to the Python language, not beginners who are new to programming.” It is therefore better used as a reference and next step than as a complete first course for every learner.
If you already understand basic programming, you can start directly with that tutorial. Python.org describes it as a brief introduction and points readers to the standard library reference and language reference for deeper detail.
Set up a place to practise
You can either use an interactive browser-based tutorial or install Python locally and work in an editor. The official tutorial notes that having an interpreter available is useful for hands-on work; its examples can also be read offline. Python’s Beginner’s Guide points learners toward installing Python 3, while LearnPython.org offers interactive browser lessons.
#1 Best Overall
- Browser practice: convenient for trying introductory examples without setting up a local environment.
- Local practice: useful when you want to run Python on your computer and work with files and an editor. Python.org’s getting-started material links to downloads and learning resources.
Follow a practical learning sequence
Learn one concept at a time, and type, run and modify code as you go. This sequence brings together the core topics listed in introductory learning material; it is a practical route, not a curriculum prescribed by one source.
- Expressions, variables and types: learn how Python evaluates values, stores them under names and distinguishes common kinds of data.
- Strings and input/output: practise working with text, displaying results and receiving simple input.
- Conditions: use
ifstatements to make a program respond differently to different values. - Loops: repeat actions with
forandwhileloops. - Functions: package a task into reusable code, give it inputs and return results.
- Collections: use lists and dictionaries to group and retrieve related data.
- Modules and packages: organise code and learn how to use functionality from other modules.
- Files and small projects: practise reading or writing simple data, then combine concepts in a small program of your own.
LearnPython.org’s lesson list includes variables and types, lists, operators, conditions, loops, functions, classes, dictionaries, modules, and input/output. You do not need to master every advanced topic before building a small project; return to lessons and references when a project raises a question.

Compare tutorials by fit, not by unsupported rankings
Resources differ in prerequisites, practice format and topic coverage. Available descriptions do not establish which one produces the best learner outcomes, so choose based on what you need rather than a universal “best” label.
| Resource | What it offers | Audience or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Official Python Tutorial (3.14.7) | Language concepts, with links onward to standard-library and language references. | Assumes basic programming understanding; the documentation says it is not comprehensive. |
| Python.org getting-started material and Beginner’s Guide | Entry points to downloads, learning material and documentation. | Python.org calls its tutorial brief rather than a complete course. |
| LearnPython.org interactive tutorial | Browser-based lessons covering common fundamentals and additional topics. | Third-party content and availability can change. |
| Microsoft Learn Python fundamentals path | The training catalog describes beginner coverage including installation, VS Code, packages and fundamentals. | Catalog details can change; the available description does not compare learning outcomes. |
Before committing to a resource, check whether it assumes prior coding knowledge, whether you can practise in your preferred format, which topics it covers, and whether it includes guided exercises.

Turn lessons into working knowledge
Reading or watching a lesson can introduce an idea, but active practice lets you check whether you can apply it. After each topic, try a small variation: change a value, add a condition, or make a function handle another input. When your code does not behave as expected, inspect the values and the exact line where the result changes, then consult a lesson or the official reference.
Keep projects small enough to finish: for example, a program that asks for a value, makes a decision and prints a result can bring together input, variables and conditions. As you add loops, functions or collections, use them to solve a real problem in the project rather than adding features just to make it larger.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use official references when you need precision
Once you have enough context to recognise the topic you are looking for, the official documentation helps distinguish a quick introduction from a precise reference. Use the tutorial for an explanation of language concepts, the library reference to look up standard modules, and the language reference for formal syntax and semantics. Python.org presents the tutorial as an introduction and directs readers to those references for greater depth.
