1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose pytest if you want function-style tests, plain assert statements, reusable fixtures, and built-in parametrization. Choose unittest if you want a test framework included with Python, class-based TestCase tests, and its setup, suite, and runner model. Neither is the universal winner: the right choice depends on your project’s conventions and needs.
pytest vs unittest: the practical differences
Both frameworks let you write and run Python tests, but they organize the work differently. pytest is installed as a separate package; unittest is part of Python’s standard library.
| Question | pytest | unittest |
|---|---|---|
| How are tests written? | Often as functions using plain assert; detailed assertion introspection helps explain failures. |
Usually as methods on a unittest.TestCase subclass, using assertion methods such as assertEqual() and assertRaises(). |
| How is setup handled? | Fixture functions provide resources or data, can depend on other fixtures, and can be scoped and parametrized. | setUp() and tearDown() handle per-test setup and cleanup; class- and module-level setup patterns are also available. |
| How are repeated cases handled? | @pytest.mark.parametrize runs a test for multiple sets of inputs; fixtures can also be parametrized. |
Test cases and subtests are available, but the reviewed documentation does not describe an equivalent decorator-style parametrization feature. |
| How do you run tests? | Use the pytest command; it discovers tests and offers command-line options. |
Use python -m unittest for command-line execution and discovery, with selection and verbosity options. |
| What is the installation trade-off? | Install it separately, for example with pip install -U pytest. |
It comes with Python’s standard library, so no separate framework installation is needed. |
When pytest is a good fit
- You prefer concise test functions and ordinary
assertstatements. - You have repeated input/output cases and want built-in parametrization.
- Tests need shared resources, layered setup, or cleanup managed through fixtures and their dependencies and scopes.
- You want pytest’s discovery, command-line options, or plugin ecosystem.
pytest’s current documentation describes support for Python 3.10 and later, or PyPy 3; check its installation documentation for current compatibility and release details. Its overview also reports more than 1,300 external plugins, a project-maintained count that can change.
When unittest is a good fit
- Your project or organization prefers dependencies limited to Python’s standard library.
- Your team favors explicit
TestCaseclasses and assertion methods. - You already use its setup/teardown hooks, suites, runner, or discovery workflow.
- You want to keep an existing unittest-style suite and its conventions.
Can pytest run unittest tests?
Yes. pytest can collect and run most tests written in the unittest style, so a team can try pytest as a runner without immediately rewriting its suite. This can be useful if you want pytest’s test selection or reporting while retaining existing TestCase classes.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
There is an important boundary: pytest fixture arguments and pytest parametrization do not work in the usual way inside unittest.TestCase methods. If you want those features, write pytest-style tests or use supported integration patterns documented by pytest rather than assuming you can add fixture parameters to a TestCase method.
Should I use pytest or unittest for a new project?
For a new project, decide based on the style you expect the team to maintain. pytest’s function-style tests have little ceremony, and fixtures and parametrization are convenient when tests share resources or cover many cases. unittest avoids an extra test-framework installation and provides a clear class-based model. A small project can work well with either if contributors use its conventions consistently.

Is pytest faster than unittest?
The official documentation cited here does not establish that one framework is generally faster. Test runtime depends on the tests, environment, Python version, and how the suite is run. If execution time is a deciding factor, benchmark representative tests in your own project under the same conditions instead of choosing from an unsupported general speed claim.
Version-sensitive discovery detail
Python’s unittest documentation for Python 3.14.7 notes that namespace packages are again supported as a discovery start directory in Python 3.14. Discovery still does not descend into subdirectories without __init__.py. Check the documentation for the Python version your project uses before relying on namespace-package discovery behavior.

ScreenshotNeo: an alternative to try first
For a separate need—capturing website screenshots in a development workflow—ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. It is not a Python testing framework, but it can provide screenshots to developer tools and AI agents. A single GET request returns an image or PDF; its MCP server provides tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For screenshot calls, cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets can be removed before capture, and bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. These are screenshot-service features, not pytest or unittest capabilities.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. You can sign up for 1,000 screenshots a month free, with no card required.
