PvE, PvP, and PvPvE Explained: What Each Mode Means

PvE means game-controlled opposition, PvP means human opponents, and PvPvE combines both. Learn what the labels tell you—and what they leave to each game.

PvE pits players against game-controlled challenges, PvP pits human players against one another, and PvPvE combines human opponents with AI-controlled enemies or hazards. The labels identify who or what you face; they do not, by themselves, tell you the objective, team size, difficulty, or exact rules.

What PvE means

PvE stands for “player versus environment.” The environment includes AI-controlled opponents and other challenges controlled by the game. Epic Games defines PvE as a game in which players compete against AI-controlled opponents in its Fortnite Glossary.

PvE can be cooperative, but the label does not require cooperation: a player might tackle the challenge alone or alongside other players. Fortnite’s Save the World is a cooperative example: players defend against monster hordes, using building, crafting, loot, and progression. The core distinction is that the opposition comes from the game, not other human players.

What PvP means

PvP means “player versus player.” Human players compete against other human players, either individually or on opposing teams. Epic’s glossary describes PvP as a gaming scenario where players compete against each other.

PvP does not necessarily mean that the only goal is to eliminate opponents. A match may instead ask teams to capture or defend an objective. Ubisoft’s Rainbow Six Siege Launch Game Guide provides an objective-based team example, describing Attackers and Defenders in modes such as Secure Area, Bomb, and Hostage. That guide is a launch-era terminology example, not confirmation that every listed mode is currently available.

What PvPvE means

PvPvE means “player versus player versus environment.” It combines conflict with human opponents and game-controlled threats, such as AI enemies or hazards. You may need to contend with both during the same experience, but the acronym does not say how often the threats appear or whether players can avoid one another.

Active Matter’s official FAQ, last updated 15 September 2026, describes encounters involving other people and monsters. It also distinguishes locations for PvPvE from locations that are exclusively PvP or PvE. That is a useful reminder that one game can offer different formats in different places; the title’s own description matters more than assumptions based on the acronym.

Quick comparison

Mode Main opposition Typical player relationship What to verify in the game
PvE AI-controlled opponents or game-controlled challenges Players may cooperate or play alone; the label does not decide which Mission or survival goal, whether co-op is supported, and what failure means
PvP Other human players Direct competition, solo or in teams Victory condition, team structure, and whether success depends on an objective
PvPvE Both human players and game-controlled threats Competition may coexist with temporary cooperation or avoidance, depending on the game Whether other players can attack you, how AI threats fit in, and what happens on failure or extraction

These are practical ways to compare mode descriptions, not universal rules. AI behavior is designed by the game; human opponents can adapt; a mixed mode layers both kinds of uncertainty. The actual risk, objective, and player interaction depend on the specific game.

How to tell which mode suits you

Before joining, look for four details in the game’s mode description:

  • Opponent type: Are enemies AI-controlled, human-controlled, or both?
  • Player interaction: Can other players attack you? Is cooperation required, optional, or impossible?
  • Objective: Are you completing a mission, surviving, defeating a team, or accomplishing an objective while threats interfere?
  • Failure and rewards: What do you lose or retain if you fail, are defeated, or leave before completing the objective?

If a mode’s description does not answer those questions, do not infer the rules from PvE, PvP, or PvPvE alone. These labels describe the broad opposition structure, not the full terms of play.
