To set it up, confirm that your router supports VPN client mode and your provider’s protocol, import the provider’s configuration, choose which traffic to route, and check what happens if the connection drops. The exact options and menu names depend on your router model and firmware.
What a router-level VPN does—and what it does not do
In VPN client mode, the router connects outward to a VPN endpoint. Devices on the network can then send supported traffic through that connection according to the router’s routing rules. This centralizes configuration and can cover devices that do not support VPN apps.

Client mode is different from VPN server mode. A server lets a remote device connect back to your home network; a client connects your local network to a VPN endpoint. ASUS’s instructions for its WireGuard server use case say an ISP-provided public WAN IP is needed, but that requirement is about the described server setup, not a general prerequisite for using a router as a VPN client. - VPN client support: Check the exact router model and firmware. Support for running a VPN server does not establish that the router can act as a client.
- Protocol match: The router must support a protocol for which your provider supplies a configuration, such as OpenVPN or WireGuard. See the router maker’s instructions for its client options. ASUS VPN client setup and GL.iNet OpenVPN client setup
- Provider configuration: Obtain the compatible profile or configuration file and any credentials from your VPN provider. GL.iNet’s OpenVPN instructions describe obtaining a configuration file from the provider and uploading it to the router. GL.iNet OpenVPN client setup
- Routing and failure controls: Check whether the firmware can route all supported traffic or select devices, and whether it offers a kill switch or block-non-VPN-traffic setting. Options vary by router and firmware. GL.iNet VPN Dashboard
Configure the VPN client
- Confirm the model and firmware. Find the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact router and verify VPN client support for the required protocol. Do not rely on a generic “VPN support” label; it may describe server features instead.
- Get the provider’s profile. Download or create the configuration for the protocol your router supports. Follow the provider’s instructions for any required username, password, key, or other credentials.
- Import and connect. Sign in to the router administration interface, open its VPN client section, add or import the profile, enter any requested credentials, and connect. The interface labels and fields are manufacturer-specific; use the guide for your model. ASUS documents client setup through its web GUI, while GL.iNet documents an OpenVPN client workflow. - Choose what uses the tunnel. Depending on the router, you may be able to route all supported traffic or apply rules to particular devices or destinations. Check whether router-originated services are included in those rules; do not assume they follow the same policy as client devices. GL.iNet’s VPN Dashboard documentation describes traffic-routing policies and kill switch controls. GL.iNet VPN Dashboard
- Set the failure behavior. If available, enable a kill switch or block-non-VPN-traffic option when preventing ordinary internet access during a VPN outage matters more than staying online. GL.iNet documents an Internet Kill Switch that blocks internet access for connected devices when the VPN client is not running; verify the exact behavior on your model and firmware. GL.iNet Internet Kill Switch
- Check routing on the devices that matter. With the VPN connected, confirm that the selected devices or traffic use the expected connection. Then disconnect the VPN client and observe whether those devices lose internet access or fall back to the ordinary WAN connection. This is a practical check of your configuration, not a guarantee that every possible leak is prevented.
Choose router-wide coverage or a device VPN app
A router VPN is useful when you want one network-level configuration for supported devices, especially devices that cannot run a VPN app. A VPN app on an individual computer can be more direct when only that computer needs the tunnel or when you want to manage its VPN independently of the home network.

| Decision | Router VPN client | VPN app on each device |
|---|---|---|
| Setup scope | Configure the router once for supported traffic and devices. | Install and configure the app on each device that needs a VPN. |
| Coverage control | Depends on router policy: all supported traffic or selected devices or destinations. | Managed through each device’s app and settings. |
| Compatibility | Requires router client support and a matching provider profile. | Requires an app for the device and a compatible provider service. |
| Connection failure | Depends on router behavior and whether a kill switch or blocking rule is enabled. | Depends on the app’s settings and behavior. |
Neither approach is automatically better for every network. Router-level configuration concentrates control at the gateway, while device apps let you choose and manage connections separately on each device.

VPN performance depends on the router, its firmware, the VPN protocol and endpoint, the internet connection, and the traffic being routed. There is no universal speed reduction or router throughput figure that applies to every setup. Check the router maker’s model-specific specifications and measure your own connection with and without the VPN under comparable conditions.

- 【AC1200 Dual-band Wireless Router】Simultaneous dual-band with wireless speed up to 300 Mbps (2.4GHz) + 867 Mbps (5GHz). 2.4GHz band can handles some simple tasks like emails or web browsing while bandwidth intensive tasks such as gaming or 4K video streaming can be handled by the 5GHz band.*Speed tests are conducted on a local network. Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*
- 【Easy Setup】Please refer to the User Manual and the Unboxing & Setup video guide on Amazon for detailed setup instructions and methods for connecting to the Internet.
- 【Pocket-friendly】Lightweight design(145g) which designed for your next trip or adventure. Alongside its portable, compact design makes it easy to take with you on the go.
- 【Full Gigabit Ports】Gigabit Wireless Internet Router with 2 Gigabit LAN ports and 1 Gigabit WAN ports, ideal for lots of internet plan and allow you to connect your wired devices directly.
- 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.
Also consider the consequences of a strict kill switch: if the tunnel stops, affected devices may lose internet access rather than revert to the regular connection. That may be desirable for traffic that must not leave outside the VPN, but disruptive for devices that need to remain online.
