Press Windows key + Left Arrow or Windows key + Right Arrow to snap the active window to that side of your screen. Then choose another open window in Snap Assist to fill the remaining space.

How to snap two windows side by side

  1. Bring the first window you want to arrange to the foreground.
  2. Press Windows key + Left Arrow to snap it left, or Windows key + Right Arrow to snap it right. Release the Windows key when the window reaches the side.
  3. If Snap Assist appears, select the second open window to fill the other side.
  4. Drag the divider between the windows to adjust their relative widths.

Microsoft describes Snap Assist as showing thumbnails of other open windows so you can choose one for the remaining side. Microsoft’s Snap instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Use a different layout or arrange windows with a mouse

Choose a Windows 11 Snap layout

Press Windows key + Z to open the Snap layouts flyout, choose a layout, then fill its remaining slots. The layouts available depend on your display size. You can also drag a window to the top of the screen to show the Snap bar, if that option is enabled.

Turn Snap options on or off

Open Settings > System > Multitasking and check the Snap windows toggle and its options. They control Snap Assist suggestions, the Snap flyout on a window’s maximize button, the top-of-screen Snap bar, Snap Groups, and snapping without dragging a window all the way to an edge. When enabled, Snap Groups can help restore an arrangement from taskbar hover, Task View, or Alt+Tab.

Move a window to another monitor instead

There is an important difference between snapping a window on its current screen and moving it to a different display. Use Windows key + Shift + Left Arrow or Windows key + Shift + Right Arrow to move the active window to a monitor positioned in that direction. The simpler Win+Left and Win+Right shortcuts snap the window within a screen. See Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcut list.

If snapping does not work as expected

  • Check that Snap windows is on under Settings > System > Multitasking.
  • Use the left/right arrow shortcut for side-by-side placement; the Up and Down arrows can produce different window actions or positions. Microsoft separately lists Win+Up to maximize and Win+Down to minimize the active window in its shortcut table.
  • If you are trying to change monitors, use Win+Shift+Left/Right instead of Win+Left/Right.
  • Snap layouts and the Snap bar can vary with display size and settings, and not every application or configuration necessarily behaves identically.

Windows 10 support status

The Snap instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft’s support page states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; that date has passed. Standard free Windows Update updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended then. This support-status change does not mean that the side-by-side shortcut itself stopped working.
